I will throw in my 2 cents worth on the oc\qb coach quandary. First, I like continuity. A system is in place that works. OK, promote Scott and hire a good qb coach. Someone with a proven record of success coaching in college. That includes recruiting. In my mind, the best candidate, though not a big name everyone clamors for is Mike Canales. 22 years coaching experience, both college and pro. He's been an oc so he can help in the game planning and he has recruited. Plus, and many throw shade at this but the idea of trust and fit in a coaching staff is very important. I've been there and done that with staffs that were close and trusted each other. It was great. I have also been on the opposite and well the whole year sucked. Anyway, just my thoughts. Go Vols.

I just can't get enthused about Canales. it seems the front half of his career was all power 5 conference and NFL, while he's spent the back half farting around in the mid majors. He couldn't land the HC job at North Texas either, despite serving as interim TWICE. Something just doesn't seem right here to me. I feel like with Dorsey or Weinke we'd be getting a guy on the upswing, whereas with Canales we'd be getting a guy on the downswing.

Fair assessment of his career. I do know he was passed over the first time for head coach at NT, the second the new ad didn't even offer him an interview.
I just like his experience more so than the other two. I think he can be a good mentor for our qbs and the new of.

We definitely should be able to do better.

I think I might actually Jeff Durden be the QB Candidate I like most out of the three we're considering.

He's been involved with a lot of great offenses and his career is on a clear upward trajectory.

He probably wouldn't bring as much recruiting as Weinke because he doesn't have the Heisman to his name or the Florida, though.

My take on weinke is I know he hasn't recruited but he was director at IMG so he knows what D1 talent looks like and I'm sure he was part of the process about who to take and who not to take

What do you think of his QB coaching? Goff was hot garbage this year once he even saw the field.

The Goff thing doesn't worry me as much as the fact that last year was the only year of experience he has coaching above the high school level. Playing in the NFL and winning a Heisman is damn impressive, sure. But we don't know how good he is at teaching the position really.

I'm sure he'd kill it on the recruiting trail though.

Winning this year on a last play 50 yard prayer that has a probability of less that 1% of completing does not give me confidence that we will go out and beat them convincingly next year when we are loosing all our production from this year on both sides of the ball!

They had just completed a similar play, so gtfo with this "probability" bull****! A winning streak is a winning streak! :yu:

Don't know anything about his coaching because I haven't paid attention to any qb he had coached and I never thought Goff was good to begin with. Did he even have a winning season at Cal?

Canales had good experience until it started heading downhill to mid-majorville about 10 years ago. If Butch follows the Debord hiring method this is who he picks.

We know Weinke coached Goff. Any QB's of note he developed at IMG or HS?

We know Ken Dorsey has coached Cam for 3 years. We also know he developed Cam, Ponder and Joe Webb at IMG a couple years before that.

Both Weinke and Dorsey played at a high level in college as well as logging time in the NFL.

There may be other options in the hopper as well.

Would help midstate recruiting that's for sure and probably immediately. Would he even be interested though ?

Comes from a big UT family, I believe his father was on the UT Athletic board. Many other dynamics can affect that though- if I remember correctly, his wife is from Baton Rouge. I may be wrong on that one though.

Weinke would have been at IMG until Deondre Francois was a senior I believe.

The 247 guys have been saying Dorsey isn't an option at this point.

I think Bo Scarbrough was at IMG during Weinkes time too. If anything he should be well connected in the high school circuit.

So we're sold on Weinke and that's who we want, right? Or is he just the better option than Canales?

I'm sold on him. A lot to sell especially as a recruiter, IMO. Former Heisman winner, NFL AND MLB player. Being familiar with Florida and the high school connection at IMG Academy is especially important in my opinion. IMG pulls kids from all over so I am sure he has relationships all over the south. This staff needs better teachers and better recruiters. Sheridan and Debord may have been great, but give me the former Heisman winning QB all day.
