Ummmmm did you watch the Va. Tech game? He was starting to take it over in a hurry. Check his stats for that one in particular.

People forget we had a really good defense at the beginning of the season. For all the bashing some do on Shoop, we don't beat APPY St, Va Tech or Florida without the defensive stops and turnovers forced. Also was big in UGA game at times. Beginning of year our offense was the issue and the end it was defense thanks to injuries

Vandy had nothing to do with the offense......

True

We scored points in both

I know, just felt offense looked good, Nebraska game, but lost to Vandy, so I guess I forgot offense was good in Vandy game.

I assume Debord let Butch know ahead of time he was looking to leave (which I never heard him say why left), so Butch started letting Scott tinker with it?

I'll take your word on it but I don't remember seeing the play

They ran them infrequently and there are variations using the bubble and screen look. We actually completed passes on some that I somewhat remember - mainly screens. It was called in nearly every game, they just were not very successful at it. It's just a modern triple option. The blocking well downfield is the issue with the NCAA review with the throw behind the LOS as the issue. The O-line is not supposed to block more than 3 yards past the LOS, but the officials are not catching it or are ignoring it. DC's are complaining they are having to figure out who is eligible out with most of the O downfield. They are right when you look at the action in games. I saw at least one or two over 5 yards downfield the majority of the time when I decided to watch for it during a few games. DT QB teams use it a lot. NCAA is probably going to dial it back to within one yard of the LOS. It was a point of emphasis and the officials are still not calling it enough to stop it. It will then be too hard for everybody to ignore and O's will have to change their plans.

The front seven was plenty solid vs. App St. No, the front seven didn't get a ton of pressure on the QB, but they didn't give up much either. The OL getting crushed is the main reason that game was so close. Even vs. Va Tech, Hokies got some early scores off the kind of quick throws up the sidelines that teams from Bama to Bowling Green have been roasting our corners with for years now. Those plays weren't really on the front seven. That D found a way to shut the Hokies down in the second half of the Battle at Bristol as well.
This is revisionist history.

App State was getting to the edge against us with relative ease for much of that game and our front seven (in part because of ASU's gameplan, in part because they weren't playing sharp) was causing no havoc against them.

VT moved the ball wel most of the night, but fumbled the ball 5-6 times and took themselves out of the game.

Kirkland played 1 1/2 games before his injury and looked incredibly fast and hard hitting. The front seven played great in the first 4 games. The offense sucked until Florida.

This just isn't true at all.

Everybody was highly disappointed with the front seven those first 3 games. Kirkland hardly flashed at all vs App State and played only a bit better against VT.

Until the second half of the UF game, everybody was wondering wtf happened to the front seven and why they took such a huge step back.

The Dormady hate is amazing. What exactly has he done for people to bash his play? Anytime he has been in and allowed to run full offense he throws lasers on the money where his WRs can make plays. How about we hope for a fierce competition and the best man win and they both do well and we win ball games.

I agree. It's premature to be picking sides and getting emotional over QB's for next season. I am happy we have both. May the best man win the job, so our Vols can win.

Except for Barnett. He got off to a quicker start than he did last year.

Clemson didn't even do that. Darth is sticking to his guns and made a terrible point.

No apparently you just don't have a functional memory.

Go back and watch our front seven in those first three games compared to the last 3 of 2015.

They look like completely different units even though it's basically all the same players.

For those who have obviously picked their side I honestly wonder if they'd be happy for the success of the other QB. Amazingly sad.

He started to look more like his old self against VT, but nowhere near the force we'd expected him to be.

7 tackles, one sack? That's solid. Not "taking the game over." Most of his tackled were too far from the LOS

We didn't have a "really good" defense at any point in the season outside of the 2nd half against UF, really.

Even at their best, they were frustratingly inconsistents.

You're wrong as usual and overly sensitive, as usual.

Our defense carried us the first 5 games of the year with solid play even without 2 of our 3 best players.

Attrition deepened against A&M. Offense stunk until we played our weaker defensive opponents.

Wroooooooooooooong. Keep lying to yourself if it gives you some warm fuzzies to not think any negative thoughts, but the defense struggled early too. Even at their best, they were worse than the 2015 unit.

The defense carried the team? Maybe against Ap State. I'll give you that one.

But you're forgetting how badly our defense struggled early in games to start the season. VT marched up and down the field early against us, then handed us a fumble in the red zone and continued to cough it up the rest of the night. When they weren't turning it over, they were getting yards though. It was a lot like our offense against A&M in that regard.

UF marched up and down the field early on us too. The only team UGA scored more on all season was UNC. App State didn't gain a whole lot of yards or score a lot, but they controlled time of possession because the defense didn't do a very good job forcing 3 and outs.

The truth is that early in the season neither the offense or the defense really carried the team because both units were so inconsistent.

No revisionist history here pal. Appalachian State scored 13 points. That's 13 with 0 points coming in the second half. Their game plan made up of edge rushes and quick passes did sort of negate our pass rush, so kudos to them. It still doesn't take away from a solid performance on the part of our defense.

And in regards to Battle at Bristol, If you take away their 79 yard score in garbage time, Va Tech got 87 yards in the second half.

The bottom line is that the D was more than solid through the first half of the season.
