He has been the interim coach at North Texas once in 2010 and once in 2015. In 2015 he went 1-6 as interim coach.

Also if you check his bio, it seems the front half of his career was all power 5 conference and NFL, while he's spent the back half farting around in the mid majors. He couldn't land the HC job at North Texas either, despite serving as interim TWICE. Something just doesn't seem right here to me. That said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he wasn't the guy simply because of familiarity with both Jones and Scott.

Considering how important recruiting is to any program, it sure seems as if Weinke or Dorsey would be a better fit than Canales. We already have Scott and another connection to elite Florida athletes sure sounds like a no-brainer.

Tennessee and especially mid state is beginning to produce better football players and having a strong connection to Florida would be a real asset. JMO

I want TN to be elite as much as the next guy. I'm hoping Butch can get us there. If we go backwards in 2017 fire Butch and hire Chip kelly

I think its fair to say we all want our program to finally get back to where it is elite.... "the jury is still out" comment I made was more toward some of the bad decisions he has made, the way he has mishandled certain situations, his ego and living in a coach speak bubble, and the seemingly inability to let go and let his staff coach without having something to say about it... the OC search is looking like another gym teacher type scenario and is not looking like an elite coach wanting to put the offense in the best hands and situation he possibly can to take the program to the next level.... very short-minded thinking... now whether he is handy-capped/handcuffed by not having a AD in place to let him hire who he wants remains to be seen, but hiring within and/or someone with little experience is not going to set the recruiting trial on fire from a offensive skill position perspective... why would any elite offense skill player want to come to UT and play under a no name OC with little to no experience when there are so many better options out there.... I think Cowherd is an idiot, but he may have accidentally nailed our head coach.

One to two months ago it was all about revamping the staff and making big moves around here.

I think that would be great - but why would anyone worth a damn come here on what could be a one year deal?

I'm on record saying I think Larry Scott will do a good job. But I'm also on record saying I think we'll go 6-6 next year. Just don't see the talent/experience on either side of the ball. So maybe my expectations are lower than most.

The way I see it, Larry Scott will end up being the interim coach after Butch is terminated in the middle of the season.

That's pretty much where I'm at.

Maybe, but it's also true to say that offense wasn't the problem. Some predictable play calling was and lack of aggression. But as Hyams just said, if you subtract non offensive touchdowns, we led the SEC in scoring this year, even ahead of Bama. Offense needs some tweaks not an overhaul. Maybe Scott can do that. Get a QB coach in here who can turn JG into a star and lookout

Considering we will need to rely heavily on TEs in pass game next year maybe a TE coach isn't a bad thing. Inguess we will see come Gameday. He doesn't have playcall experience but doesn't mean he can't be successful at it or not good at it. He is fairly young inn coaching years but that job he did at Miami as interim really accelerated his timeline on the coaching food chain. He is very impressive when he talks that's for sure and players will run through a wall for him. That can go a long way

Man, you have completely given up 😂

I get the feeling that Dormady is gonna end up being the starter. I don't know why. Guarantano just seems so fun and I feel like we're gonna a have to wait longer for it.

Wonder if Scott can really be a great one for us. As many have said, offense doesn't need an overhaul. Less predictability, more aggression, offense could be something. Maybe Scott will bring these things.

Wouldn't be the worse thing to happen. My expectation from seeing how Butch works is he will drag it out as far as he can. He will lean toward experience and start Dormady and have a Guarantano package along with more Jennings wildcat stuff to still have running QB threat in certain situations. If Dormady fails then G runs with it from there.

With it being sub a critical year for Butch, you have to think of he promotes Scott which seems likely at this point then he has to have some pretty strong faith in his ability to get job done

Yeah I could see that happening for sure. The only way Guarantano wins the job is if he just plays out of his mind in the offseason and makes the decision a no brainer. I do think Dormady will give him all he can handle in a competition though.

But we'll see. I'm team Guarantano all the way.

Agree with you except this part. I think he will give Dormady the first full chance to succeed or fail. And he will probably be named the starter a week before the season starts.

And many on VN will flip

I saw it posted a couple of days ago that Rock is actually 61. He would like that decade back.

There was a SI article that referred to him as 70...obviously wrong with the timeline of his career.
