There is just not one single thing that excites me about Canales being Co-OC or QB coach.

Both Dorsey and Weinke would bring so much more to the table.

Agreed. With Dorsey or Weinke, it seems like we'd be getting a guy on the upswing, whereas with Canales, it just seems like we'd be getting a guy on the downswing.

Butch... gym teacher... hmmm. There are a lot of things wrong with that comment, but unfortunately a lot of things right about that comment... jury is still out. Let's see how the coaching search plays out with OC and others....

Larry Scott is going to do well if Butch doesn't micromanage him to death. The story of 2017 will be the defense.

Theres no basis for this opinion whatsoever. It's a complete crap shoot, just like weinke or Dorsey would be, because none of them have a track record to base an opinion on. Any of them could be the next Herman or Kiffin, and any of them could be the worst OC we've ever had.

I think it's fair to say the jury is still out. If we're honest, this is the first year that Butch has underachieved. And there are definitely reasons for it. 20 injuries will affect any team and our defense really was shredded, no doubt. However, there hasn't been any overachieving from Butch either. Jury still out is fair. Staff hires will be huge but I am more concerned about recruiting than anything. Fact is, if we're not recruiting at a high level, we won't be winning at a high level

Sure - but I'm betting on him being pretty good. Players like him, has enough of a resume that places are wanting to interview them for their head coaching positions, and he's been given some credit for our offensive success last year. He's got a better resume to be our offensive coordinator than Dorsey or Weinke, in my opinion. Those guys will be fine as QB coaches.

The jury is still out on Butch for the diehard fans, but ticket sales are still doing great and he runs a clean program that will probably finish in the top 25 for the foreseeable future (as 9-4 is enough to get there in the SEC). I think that's enough for TPTB to keep him around as long as he wants to be here. We all know there's no all-in push to get Tennessee back to elite status in football.

I think many of you are ignoring that CBJs last couple of hires have been outside guys. He is learning to go outside his comfort zone for a good hire. I believe he will again for either the OC or QB coach.

I want TN to be elite as much as the next guy. I'm hoping Butch can get us there. If we go backwards in 2017 fire Butch and hire Chip kelly

Let's hope. Both Scott and Shoop were outside hires that were viewed by everyone as homerun hires.

I am kind of liking the Scott to OC and Weinke to QB coach route. Then the only remaining piece would be if Mo leaves and we would need a OL coach.

"Heisman Trophy winner and former Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke is on campus today to interview for a spot on Butch Jones staff. Weinke is one of the lead candidates to become Tennessee's quarterbacks coach. The Vols have been led in that department by quality control offensive staff Nick Sheridan, but he took a full time spot at Central Michigan following Tennessee's win in the Music City Bowl.

Following, the interview with Weinke, expect Tennessee to bring in Utah State assistant head coach Mike Canales for an interview this weekend. Canales will be in Nashville for the coaching convention and is said to be making the drive over from the mid-state to see the staff. Jones has known him for a while. He interviewed Canales when he hired Mike DeBord and was high on him when the Vols played North Texas a year ago when Canales was the interim head coach. It's also worth noting that Canales and Larry Scott worked together at South Florida."

You don't have to have a documented solid foundation for every opinion you have. Sometimes you just get a good feeling about a guy. Scott seems super competent and and well liked and I could see him being a good fit. It doesn't blow my mind that Butch might think that. He spends a lot more time around him then I ever have.

I get the opposite feeling about CZA. Clearly nobody knows anything for sure. But I would rather go with the guy who connects and inspires confidence in his guys. I like that Scott is younger but has some unique coaching experiences in the past that he had to figure out as he went along. That will serve him well in the future.

I also don't think play calling is this crazy unique skill that you need years of experience in order to be good at it. I bet any one of our coaches could step in and do it fairly well. You just hope whoever Butch chooses has an elite feel for the flow of the game and gives us an advantage. We won't know until the season starts either way.
