Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXXI

John Brice said yesterday on 247 that he thought Ken Dorsey was "near the top of the list" on the OC board. I have yet to find an explanation as to why or how Dorsey is on the list at all.

4 years coaching Cam Newton in the NFL would set very well with recruits, not to mention providing more than solid experience coaching a mobile QB. Larry Scott and Dorsey as Co-OC's would be pretty close to a homerun IMO, especially if we're keeping the same offensive system regardless of who the OC is.

For those wondering about Scott's involvement in play-calling and running an entire offense:

Jones is talking with in-house candidates as well, including the aforementioned Scott and Zach Azzanni. Scott is considered a future head coach and owns experience as Miami’s interim head coach from 2015, when his 4-1 finish to the regular season got the Hurricanes into a bowl game. Sources say Scott owns some play-calling experience but that “it’s been a bit.”

Man, I would feel a lot better with a Scott hire for OC if Weinke comes along as a Co-OC or QB coach. He would be a great recruiter I would think. Recruits would love his experience at IMG and also that he trained some of the top quarterbacks in the league.

If we're keeping the same offensive system and going the Co-OC route with Scott, a Scott/Weinke combo would be just behind a Scott/Dorsey combo IMO.

So it's going to be Scott as OC and Weinke as QB coach? I can live with that. Weinke should be huge for our QB talent as well as recruiting. Our offense is fine, all we need from Scott is better "in the moment" play calling so as not to be so predictable and a little more aggressiveness. Clearly our scheme works tho.

Weinke also coached Cam during an off season. I think it was during the NFL lockout. He also coached other NFL QBs that were duel threat. Plus he would have the experience working for IMG academy so he knows the recruiting game really well.

If we did go for Dorsey I wouldn't be too upset though as he does seem like a good option like you mentioned. I think either one of these guys linked with Scott could be good.

If Jones is insistent on keeping the existing offense in tact, and I think he is, then I am still alright with a Scott/Dorsey or Scott/Weinke combo. It's potentially better than bringing an an established guy but not letting him bring his own playbook.

Can't imagine Azzanni takes kindly to being passed over twice. Bet he hits the road.

We can only hope...especially on top of the significant improvements in WRs (but only after CBJ jumped in)

Hopefully the two occurrences will encourage him to move on...

Maybe DeBord will take Azzani with him...

I just hope we hire an OC who can make adjustments on the fly and Can create favorable matchups for the talented guys in space

I wonder how it would affect QB recruiting for the 2018 & 19 classes with either Dorsey or Weinke? It could bring several top level recruits back into play.

I've seen this movie before. Promote Scott to CO-OC with Canales (also QB Coach). Since Scott is obviously on the path to being a head coach, Canales is already now in place to take over as OC in a year or two when Scott takes a HC job.

SIAP, but I did not know that Rock Gullickson and Butch Jones have a long history together. Brice said on 247 yesterday that Gullickson was in CBJ's wedding. Maybe he meant to say he was at Jones' wedding because he is 70 years old now? Also, they were both at Rutgers together earlier in their careers.

I saw it posted a couple of days ago that Rock is actually 61. He would like that decade back.

Agree. Scott is becoming a serious candidate in the coaching marketplace.

Very meh, but so Tennessee. I would be much more excited about Weinke or Dorsey in that spot.

I remember george doing that i think. Is this a seinfeld test?

I know I'm several pages behind but I think George quit his job and then went back trying to convince them that he was just kidding.
Kramer just showed up and began attending meetings and had an office.

Love that show!

There is just not one single thing that excites me about Canales being Co-OC or QB coach.

Both Dorsey and Weinke would bring so much more to the table.

Larry Scott is going to do well if Butch doesn't micromanage him to death. The story of 2017 will be the defense.
