Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXXI

I didn't want to try to multi-quote everyone on the Sab/247 kerfuffle, but just before Christmas, there was some real contention as Sab had passed off some of their information as his own. At the same time, he said he had a "source" that said we were getting Akers. When Akers chose FSU, some folks were giving him crap about it and source, so he tweets out for anyone to see that his source was Meleik Gray. Gray responded in some way and now seems like a flip to FSU might happen for Gray.

I'm sure some of this may have been posted in the Gray thread. And, I know that everyone considers Sab to be a clown of the highest order, but it's getting to the point now that he's actually potentially detrimental to the program when he interacts with recruits. I guess there's no real way to do it, but when it comes to him on internet/social media, he needs to be shut down in the worst way.

He has been detrimental to recruiting for awhile. He is the idiot that will talk trash about a kid and @ them in the damn convo. He also is way too forthcoming with info he finds on sites that should stay on sites and not on recruits twitter timelines for easy access that doesn't have to be searched for. Coaches have tried to get him to shut up before when he was direct messaging kids and he did for awhile but like a leech he always comes back.

Countries are invaded, governments overthrown, and new rulers established, in far less time than it takes Tennessee to hire a single human who can run the AD.

I bet Thailand has another coup before they do it

If you really put your mind to it, you can probably make those words come true :)

I have no problem with admin doing their due diligence to ensure they get the right hire. My problem with it is the timeline. Late January/February suggests due diligence to me, April/May suggests that it's been put on the back burner. If this thing goes to April or May and we settle on a Gilbert, who has never been an AD before, then I hope UT fans, boosters, alumni, etc give em hell. They'd deserve it.

I'd love to see him in one of those consultant roles.

I worry about his relationship with the university souring if he ever became a coach of some sort here and didn't have the success most expect.

As a consultant, he could spend time watching film, breaking down tendencies, pointing out weak spots in opposing teams, etc without having to bear the burden that coaches get when their teams struggle.

Agreed. As much fapping as would occur from Peyton being hired as a coach here I think the possibility of our fans turning on him would be too much of a negative for it to be a desired course of action. Peyton in a behind the scenes role would be the best option for UT Football.

I could get pretty fired up about a Larry Scott/Dorsey Co-OC deal. A Scott/Weinke Co-OC deal would be promising as well.

But I'm afraid that if Jones wants to keep Azzani around bad enough, he'll name him Co-OC with Scott just to keep him. Then, because he's the only candidate that would come aboard without the Co-OC title, we'd have to settle for Canales. Add in Walt Wells and that's pretty underwhelming all the way around. So Tennessee.

Just be careful if you come up against Les Grossman, Nick. He does not negotiate with terrorists.

Yeah that could be mutually beneficial though. Makes him seem in demand and gives him a chance to pick some other coaches' brains a bit.

Maybe so. But I am also pretty sure the report about Kelly being fired had come out before our game. Obviously, we don't know exactly what went down.

He has been active on the twitters since then talking about and recruiting for UT. I'm not worried here.

SIAP, but I did not know that Rock Gullickson and Butch Jones have a long history together. Brice said on 247 yesterday that Gullickson was in CBJ's wedding. Maybe he meant to say he was at Jones' wedding because he is 70 years old now? Also, they were both at Rutgers together earlier in their careers.

John Brice said yesterday on 247 that he thought Ken Dorsey was "near the top of the list" on the OC board. I have yet to find an explanation as to why or how Dorsey is on the list at all.

There’s a Heisman Trophy winner today on Rocky Top.

In fact, he’s been in Knoxville since Thursday night.

Former Florida State Heisman winner Chris Weinke, mostly recently a coach for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, arrived in Knoxville Thursday at a downtown hotel and will spend at least today, perhaps longer, interviewing for a spot on Butch Jones’ University of Tennessee staff.

After two seasons on Jeff Fisher’s Rams’ staff as quarterbacks coach and the previous four at prestigious IMG Academy in the Orlando suburbs, Weinke --- also a former professional baseball player who also played in the NFL --- is exploring job options since the entire Rams’ staff was gutted last month.

On Dorsey:

Aside from his own accomplishments as a player, Weinke is considered a very strong developer of quarterback talent. In helping prepare various quarterbacks in recent years for the NFL Draft, Weinke’s work includes time with Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and myriad other signal-callers.

Jones throughout the week has traveled to speak with candidates, including an early-week stop in North Carolina that was “likely to see Ken Dorsey,” according to sources.

Better than Scott, but I agree. Don't see how all these never been OC are being considered for an SEC job. If butch wants to train OC on the job go back to Cincinnati

Man, I would feel a lot better with a Scott hire for OC if Weinke comes along as a Co-OC or QB coach. He would be a great recruiter I would think. Recruits would love his experience at IMG and also that he trained some of the top quarterbacks in the league.
