Scott isn't my first choice but the most likely choice it seems like from everything that's been said in here. I can't speak for everyone else but I would be okay with Scott given how he was involved in bringing different looks on offense, like 2 TE sets for instance, late in the year. it seemed to be effective and that was Scott's suggestion. He doesn't have playcalling experience is the only thing I'm worried about but if he can at least analyze our offense and add in new subtle plays or formations it might be just what Butch is looking for.
I'll agree adding 2 TE sets is a positive, but one good suggestion to get your position group more involved is a miniscule drop in the bucket of what an OC does. It's like making someone a VP because they suggested a more efficient filing method for the office.
CLS could game plan and prepare the offense and Butch could call the plays. It is not out the realm of possibility for that to happen. Or maybe LS starts out calling the plays and if it doesn't go well, Butch could take over.
But what are her intentions? Does she really want to hire the best AD or is there an agenda? The CEO of GE knows nothing about building nuke plants, but that doesn't mean he is incapable of vetting and hiring the VP in charge of engineering. She doesn't need to know anything about athletics to hire the person that does.
That would be a security blanket if needed. I'm sure Azzani could also be an emergency play caller too but idk if I trust him either.
Chalk up another remarkable honor for Derek Barnett.
And for NFL Draftniks, this one might be the biggest of all Tennessees All-American has garnered. Barnett on Wednesday was named Pro Football Focus Best Pass Rusher of 2016 on the heels of Barnetts 13-sack, 42-quarterback hurries farewell campaign.
Additionally, Barnett amassed 22 quarterback hits through the Vols 9-4 season that culminated last Friday in a 38-24 Tennessee win in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.
The PFF honor comes a day after Barnetts formal declaration that hes entering the 2017 NFL Draft. Here is what PFF's report says of Barnett:
Derek Barnett, ED, Tennessee
PFF grade: 92.1; Pos. rank: 3
This may not be a big surprise, but Derek Barnett had a pretty phenomenal season. While Barnetts run defense was far from anything to scoff at, it was his ability as a pass-rusher that truly set him apart. While players like Kansas States Jordan Willis and FAUs Trey Henrickson had great pass-rushing seasons, Barnett absolutely deserves the award for best pass-rusher.
Barnett finished the year with 13 sacks, 22 hits and an additional 42 quarterback hurries. Those 75 total pressures ranked fourth in the country among all edge rushers. His 16.1 pass-rushing productivity of 16.1 also ranked fourth, showing that he didnt just rack up a ton of pressures based on volume of snaps. He also had an additional 13 plays in which he cleanly beat his man rushing the passer, but was unable to record a pressure (due to a quick release by the QB or something similar).
Barnett was a consistent force for opposing right tackles, and had some massive games for the Tennessee defense. He had seven games in which he had more than five total pressures and three games where he had more than 10 pressures. He never had a below-average pass-rushing grade in any game this season. His 92.6 season pass-rush grade ranked second among all edge defenders (trailing only Willis). While some edge rushers may have had more pressures than Barnett, few were as consistent and as dominant as Barnett was. Thats why he deserves this award. Bryson Vesnaver
Why do you guys like Weinke for QB coach? I'll hang up and listen
It's really become a lose-lose situation for CBD. If she hires someone other than Blackburn, the fanbase will revolt. If she hires Blackburn, the fan base will be upset they didn't hire him a month ago (or 3 months ago by the time they hire him).
Wow, if we are really trying to figure out contingency plans for contingency plans for poor play calling if we go the internal route, let's just hire an experienced OC/QB coach to do all of this.
I'm starting to wonder if Butch likes to make things difficult for himself.
Yeah. Reports have been that Helfrich, not Butch, was the guy who cooled on the deal. Whether that's because he just wants to take it easy for a season or two or because he's not interested in working with Butch is what I'd like to know.lol, I wish he would do that. I think he still might but I just have a feeling he will do the safe thing and promote Scott.
He did go after Helfrich which shows hes open to bringing in a valuable experienced OC/QB so who knows.

But you've gotta think Butch should be able to find an experienced who would want to come here if he was willing to be let the guy have control and be hands off.
