Scott isn't my first choice but the most likely choice it seems like from everything that's been said in here. I can't speak for everyone else but I would be okay with Scott given how he was involved in bringing different looks on offense, like 2 TE sets for instance, late in the year. it seemed to be effective and that was Scott's suggestion. He doesn't have playcalling experience is the only thing I'm worried about but if he can at least analyze our offense and add in new subtle plays or formations it might be just what Butch is looking for.

CLS could game plan and prepare the offense and Butch could call the plays. It is not out the realm of possibility for that to happen. Or maybe LS starts out calling the plays and if it doesn't go well, Butch could take over.

I'll agree adding 2 TE sets is a positive, but one good suggestion to get your position group more involved is a miniscule drop in the bucket of what an OC does. It's like making someone a VP because they suggested a more efficient filing method for the office.

Yeah I think that was only one of the things he suggested. I think he was more involved in game planning and I think I saw in this thread way back that he was very involved leading up to the bowl game. He also has game planning experience when he was at Miami as interim HC. He didn't call plays but there's no way he didn't game plan with the OC in that position.

If we did go with Scott I wouldn't mind a Co-OC position and bring in someone with playcalling experience to call the plays. I don't think it will happen though.

That would be a security blanket if needed. I'm sure Azzani could also be an emergency play caller too but idk if I trust him either.

The CEO of GE knows nothing about building nuke plants, but that doesn't mean he is incapable of vetting and hiring the VP in charge of engineering. She doesn't need to know anything about athletics to hire the person that does.
But what are her intentions? Does she really want to hire the best AD or is there an agenda?

To me it isn't about "ability to hire the right person", but rather is that what she is really after?

Wow, if we are really trying to figure out contingency plans for contingency plans for poor play calling if we go the internal route, let's just hire an experienced OC/QB coach to do all of this.

I'm starting to wonder if Butch likes to make things difficult for himself.

Chalk up another remarkable honor for Derek Barnett.

And for NFL Draftniks, this one might be the biggest of all Tennessee’s All-American has garnered. Barnett on Wednesday was named Pro Football Focus’ ‘Best Pass Rusher of 2016’ on the heels of Barnett’s 13-sack, 42-quarterback hurries farewell campaign.

Additionally, Barnett amassed 22 quarterback hits through the Vols’ 9-4 season that culminated last Friday in a 38-24 Tennessee win in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.

The PFF honor comes a day after Barnett’s formal declaration that he’s entering the 2017 NFL Draft. Here is what PFF's report says of Barnett:

Derek Barnett, ED, Tennessee
PFF grade: 92.1; Pos. rank: 3

This may not be a big surprise, but Derek Barnett had a pretty phenomenal season. While Barnett’s run defense was far from anything to scoff at, it was his ability as a pass-rusher that truly set him apart. While players like Kansas State’s Jordan Willis and FAU’s Trey Henrickson had great pass-rushing seasons, Barnett absolutely deserves the award for best pass-rusher.

Barnett finished the year with 13 sacks, 22 hits and an additional 42 quarterback hurries. Those 75 total pressures ranked fourth in the country among all edge rushers. His 16.1 pass-rushing productivity of 16.1 also ranked fourth, showing that he didn’t just rack up a ton of pressures based on volume of snaps. He also had an additional 13 plays in which he cleanly beat his man rushing the passer, but was unable to record a pressure (due to a quick release by the QB or something similar).

Barnett was a consistent force for opposing right tackles, and had some massive games for the Tennessee defense. He had seven games in which he had more than five total pressures and three games where he had more than 10 pressures. He never had a below-average pass-rushing grade in any game this season. His 92.6 season pass-rush grade ranked second among all edge defenders (trailing only Willis). While some edge rushers may have had more pressures than Barnett, few were as consistent and as dominant as Barnett was. That’s why he deserves this award. – Bryson Vesnaver

It's really become a lose-lose situation for CBD. If she hires someone other than Blackburn, the fanbase will revolt. If she hires Blackburn, the fan base will be upset they didn't hire him a month ago (or 3 months ago by the time they hire him).

Why do you guys like Weinke for QB coach? I'll hang up and listen

When Weinke was a QB for the Carolina Panthers, he was thoughtful and insightful about what was going on on certain plays. He broke it down so average people, like my mother could somewhat understand what his vision was. I always attributed that to taking time out to play pro baseball and then coming back to college and really having to concentrate on the finer details to get back in football mental shape. If he can do that for the general public, I think he'd probably be able to go deeper into it with a QB who really understands what's going on.

He also won a Heisman Trophy and played, albeit sparingly, in the NFL.

Impossible! Jimmy Hyams said helfritch wasn't even an option at this point (blue font)

I actually don't think Helfrich is really much of a candidate. I can't tell you why 247 left him on their board because Brice hasn't responded to any questions regarding the board yet.

I'll give Scott a chance and a fair shake, but you've gotta admit it's not a great look for Butch. Just increases the perception that he's unwilling to make hires he can't keep pinned under his thumb. Considering that many, of not most, think Butch needs to be more hands off and more the CEO type, it's a puzzling move. Makes you wonder if he's completely unwilling to make a different type of move or if nobody wants to hop on board with him.

Some here have said Scott is regarded as a great offensive mind, but by whom? Just because he had some input on formations doesn't mean he's ready to be the guy in charge of the entire offense. He's never been a play caller. He seems to have a HC future, but honestly I always figured that was as more of a CBJ CEO/Recruiting Ace kind of coach than a guy who makes it on being great with Xs and Os.

The AD thing is troubling as well, but it's obvious there's more than Davenport at play. Honestly, to me the whole situation feels like some in the administration want to leave Butch without effective leadership to help make hires to increase the chances of him crashing and burning. That's probably not the case (or at least, there's more likely more to it), but damn. It feels like they're setting Butch up to fail tona certain extent here.

I think all will be forgiven if she ultimately makes the right choice.

lol, I wish he would do that. I think he still might but I just have a feeling he will do the safe thing and promote Scott.

He did go after Helfrich which shows hes open to bringing in a valuable experienced OC/QB so who knows.

Yeah. Reports have been that Helfrich, not Butch, was the guy who cooled on the deal. Whether that's because he just wants to take it easy for a season or two or because he's not interested in working with Butch is what I'd like to know.

But you've gotta think Butch should be able to find an experienced who would want to come here if he was willing to be let the guy have control and be hands off.

That could be the reason. I tend to think that everything cooled down because Chip Kelly was fired. I think he takes a year off and goes wherever Chip goes next year unless Chip takes an OC job somewhere.

I don't know about anybody else but the Clawson disaster weighs heavily on my mind. A new system almost always spells bad news, especially with our QB situation and how many points we put up last year.

People say Butch is hard headed doesnt want to change his offense, yada yada

I think he wants to keep his job.
