PSU returns almost everybody, brings in a top 5 class, and beat OSU this year.

Edit: Ignore the top 5 class part. Not sure where I pulled that from.

We brought back everyone and had a top ranked recruiting class and flopped in 2016.

I'm done going by returning starters or what happened the year before. Every season is anew.

I simply trust Ohio State over Penn State who I think just had a lucky season. Plus the game will be in Columbus. I don't see Ohio State losing to Penn State two years in a row.

If there's any truth to that 247 hit piece on Butch from a few weeks ago, this year's underachievement had more to do with lack of conditioning and lack of leadership than problems with the offensive and defensive coordinators. The Vols weren't outschemed by South Carolina and Vandy, just undisciplined and halfhearted. Rock Gullickson is the most important hire of the offseason.

I don't necessarily disagree with lack of leadership and conditioning being a problem, but I do think we were out-schemed in both games. South Carolina's defense was very well prepared for our offense and Dobbs having an off-game was directly correlated with that. Muschamp has always been able to take away what we do best and make Dobbs beat them with his arm.

I tend to look more at QB's. They can either make an average situation look excellent or an excellent situation look average.

I like Penn States QB a lot.

Although I'm pretty much convinced the upward trajectory of UT under Butch has permanently plateaued, the administration sure isn't doing hin any favors in helping break through.

They're not thinking long-term. And most are focused on other agendas.

The Penn State QB is a joke. He's a gimmick player with no real talent. All he does is throw it up in the air for grabs. It worked alot late in the season. But it bit them in the behind ultimately as that gun slinging cost them the game against USC with that late INT.

I trust Urban Meyer to come back with a vengeance next year.

I'm thinking after the OC hire, we won't see any further staff changes until after NSD. They seem happy with the class and don't want to risk mass defections.

You know darn well this board wasn't upset over the first few days when Debords name first surfaced. The entire process took so long that shortly after his name was mentioned the rationalization begin with "he is just here to groom CZA for a few years".

That narrative 100% was accepted here.

I remember the opposite, if you are talking about the initial reaction. Butch seemed to realize that he assumed too much, did the perfunctory search, then named DeBoard. In the meantime he did a PR campaign to have his selection okayed by VolNation. That pretty much worked to the tune of "Okay, he is not a sexy hire but Butch knows him and we should accept his choice".

This was the time when recruiting was going pretty well and the trajectory of the program was better than now. I never remember anyone being delirious with his hire. But, give him his due, he did a good job.

Is he as good as the USC QB and other top QBs? Probably not. But he definitely is not a joke. Dude made some really nice throws in the Rose Bowl and the BIG10 championship.

I think the foundation is being laid for Scott to be promoted. you got the two main vol sites appearing to set that table and bringing up things he helped change in the scheme late in year. It not sexy hire but I would have some optimism there. More than I would Z. The players love Scott but I think would butt heads with Z as they already have at times. We would need to make a very nice QB hire though.

I thought McSorely was a joke coming into this season and even halfway through it but the dude makes plays. Some of those throws he makes are ridiculous and on target. He isn't a joke. He is a very good college QB. NFL potential not so much but one of those fun guys to watch play college

The way some of you make it sound, CBJ is holding the venerable Tennessee football program hostage.

That's why I said people were spiraling.

Minimal legit information is getting out and people aren't handling it well.

I just shrug. They'll hire who they hire. I'll hope it works out. The last guy they hired that we all hated had some damn good production so I'll just keep my mouth shut this go around.

For the OC position, Butch should just wake up and let volnation call the plays by committee.

If D4H is in charge, though, Dormady may as well go ahead and get his transfer papers ready. For that matter, McBride, too. Sheriron, you're in luck, though.

He would also want to hire Dobbs as the QB coach.

So what are Scott's qualifications to actually fill this role?

He went 4-2 as the interim coach at Miami. Offense is his side.

Whether he gets it and works out or not, everyone gets a job where they have specific duties that they haven't performed previously. It's called promotion.

I wasn't questioning. I was asking. Didn't know if had been an OC or Co-OC or thought of as great offensive mind or what.

I understand not wanting to redo the entire offense, that usually spells disaster- I think some of us wouldn't have been as upset if we hadn't been teased with the possibility of Helfrich. Just like when we were teased with Gruden. It's just another opportunity to upgrade and Butch doesn't do it. Hopefully LWS is right and Blackburn will be hired in the end to give us some hope going forward.

Had Fulmer not tried to revamp the entire offense in 2008 and Dooley hadn't tried to change scheme of defense in 2012, we'd have won the east both years.

I don't want to hire an OC that had to be babysat as a position coach.

If we are hiring from within I guess we just have to trust CBJ is making the right choice between the two. Not a lot of OC experience between the two. But Tee Martin didn't have OC experience until he did.

This is a big hire.

Agree 💯

Did he call plays when he was the interim coach at Miami? Honest question.
