How quickly this board forgets. This board was so high on the Debord hire for a few years as it would be a great grooming time for CZA to learn from the veteran. Now that has happened, with a hell of a lot of success, not one poster wants to own up to that plan.

I think you're forgetting, Bruin. People were pretty upset that we hired a retired swim coach.

What are you talking about? I don't remember a single person that was pro Azzanni

That's not even close to how I remember it

IMO, I have a hard time believing that Shoop would come to UT and not use what he calls his bread and butter. He mentioned adapting to Janceks terminology to smooth the transition, but not the style of play. I think it was more dependent on personnel on why we didn't see it as much this year.

It's either a matter of him not adjusting the scheme as much for the sake of continuity or because he didn't have the personnel for it.

But for whatever reason, he didn't use one at all last year or in the spring. Not once did he put a look with a star linebacker on the field (at least when made viewable by the public).

And our defensive personnel will be basically the same next year. So if it's a matter of personnel, I'm not sure we'll see on in 2017 either.

Personally I'm of the opinion he didn't use one for the former reason, because I have a hard time believing that he could find a star LB at Vandy and PSU no problem (and if you go back and look at those depth charts, the guys they played at Star LB had a pretty varied range of sizes from basically the size of a safety to the size of an average WLB) but he couldn't find anybody to fit that spot here. Seems like between all the OLBs and Safeties we have, he could've found someone to plug into that role.

I don't have a problem with Azzani. I think he's improved as a WR coach. I don't want him as my OC but I don't think he's done a bad job.

Who TF was high on the Debord hire? Most people thought "oh well, guess Butch just wants a yes man and even he thinks Azzani's not cut out for it."

How soon this board forgets how high we all were on Sal Sunseri after the 2012 season and how disappointed we all were when Butch didn't retain him.

I can't remember anyone high on the promotion of a pool cleaner to OC. 🤔

It seemed very "meh" to me and concerned me that the offense would be boring and predictable. Seemed too much a favor to a friend.

Bruin will now try to convince everyone that the way he "remembers" it is what actually happened, even though every single other poster on here knows his version of events to be false.

Annnnnnd....... GO!

In this instance, “shortly” means already filled.

Multiple sources connected to both collegiate athletics and the NFL have confirmed to 247Sports that veteran NFL strength and conditioning coach Rock Gullickson will be introduced as Tennessee’s new director of strength and conditioning in the imminent future, as Butch Jones seeks to fill one of the key openings on his Volunteers’ coaching staff.

“We do have the vacant strength and conditioning spot,” Jones said, “and I can see that being filled here very, very shortly.

“We’re still in some evaluation of things … but I see that wrapping up very quickly.”

The fact is, the post essentially has been “wrapped” up for several weeks with Gullickson, who just finished his 17th consecutive year in the NFL including the past eight with the Rams’ franchise.

I think you're the one with memory problems. There were a couple of posters who try to rationalize everything Butch does as genius who liked the hire, but it was universally panned.

I'll own up to hating the hire, but think DeBord ended up working pretty well.

Elsewhere, it’s not out of the realm that Bo Hardegree could end up in the mix for a quarterback coaching position, especially if Jones opts for someone like Scott to be his O.C., but Hardegree wasn’t a name generating more than a “yeah, it could happen for position coach” when we spoke with folks throughout the day.

Additionally, I was told emphatically by a trusted source with long ties to Matt LaFleur to scotch the NFL assistant’s name from any collegiate OC/QB coach talk. Kyle Shanahan is a strong candidate for some NFL head coaching jobs, per sources, and there’s belief that LaFleur is in line to be Shanahan's offensive coordinator if one of those scenarios unfolds.

Ken Dorsey is a name surfacing because he allegedly is a mutual acquaintance of current Vols’ tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Larry Scott, but their time at Miami does not remotely overlap. Further, their bios share no common history of working together.

Chip Lindsey is among the other top names 247Sports has heard for the Vols’ current OC opening, and it’s always good to monitor the situation at Texas Christian University to see if one of their two co-coordinators might seek to branch out on his own. Sonny Cumbie is the Horned Frogs’ QBs coach as well as co-coordinator with Doug Meacham.

Bob Shoop has talked with North Carolina State’s George Barlow about coming aboard the Vols’ staff, and 247Sports can report with confidence after speaking with both SEC and ACC folks that there is mutual interest. As noted repeatedly, UT also has had contact with former Vols All-American and current Colorado State secondary coach Terry Fair.

Now on Barlow, again while there is mutual attraction, there also is buyout concern. While the Wolfpack have committed very solid financial resources to their assistant coaches’ in recent years, with those commitments have come some heavy costs associated with seeking a departure.

There’s great rapport between Barlow and Shoop, and we’re likewise told “Barlow’s a heck of a coach, low ego, good guy.”

Caught violating team rules on location last week, Dimarya Mixon was sent home as 247Sports first reported and neither dressed nor was allowed inside Nissan Stadium for the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.

Mixon’s future with the program is, at best, murky.

The bottom line is that none of our current coaches in marquee sports are having so much success that they should dictate an AD hire.

If the "powers that be" ran Hart off just to hire his protege, it makes me question how they ever had enough acumen to become the powers that be in the first place.

I've never considered stopping financial support for my alma mater or advocating a boycott of UT sports, but I'm not sure how to get the administration's attention in any other meaningful way.

Sports aren't everything, but I want my university to be a winner again. And whether they like it or not, winning athletics is good for the school and the community.

This is an excellent post.

Like the idea of adding the NC State guy over Fair, TBH. Longer track record and probably more comfort working with Shoop. Gotta let him choose the guys he wants to work with if we want him to have success.

For me, this OC hire is probably one of the most challenging I've see in a while. There are just no "no-brainer" options out there. The ones who fit the QB development role don't have play calling experience. The ones who fit both roles well, as just not viable candidates. For example, Tee Martin is just not ever coming to the Vols. In fact, I would be shocked if he ever left California because of his wife's career. Jim Bob Cooter would be perfect, but he is already being mentioned as a future NFL head coach. Just don't believe that college coaching is an option for him unless it is as a head coach. Helfrich just doesn't seem to be a good fit for the range of needs for the job, specifically play calling. Kelly is not one I would ever consider. My preferred candidate, LaFleur doesn't have play calling experience. On the surface, this hire would seem easy, but there are so many complicating factors. Throw on top that Jones wants to keep his basic offense in tack with some enhancements, finding the right candidate is tough.

I was probably one of the ones trying to rationalize it at the time. But now that we've seen it, I think we could have done a lot better.
