right now its an unknown who would be ditching who. maybe after face to face the last week CBJ decides he doesn't fit.

CBJ has been vetting Helfrich for a month or so. If something doesn't come down in the next 48 hours I would say they have determined to not pursue, they being both.

the position is open that needed to open to make Helfrich OC/QB coach. shouldn't take long to announce if he is going to be the guy

What is this context? Is he saying Helfrich is pretty much not the guy?

Having a hard time making sense of that myself.

I fished it out of the FF.

A poster who apparently doesn't know anything throws out the wild first portion of the post, assuming Hefrich would not come, as a hypothetical, "then I sadly have to say he trolled Butch.

Who would be our back up candidates if Helfrich ditches us?"

LWS response is it is unclear who the unwilling party would be. It is a response to a hypothetical question. The rest of the post is LWS saying that we should hear within the next couple of days, and that Butch may decide Helfrich is not a fit, but he is not putting forth any insider info, just hypothetical, again.

Thanks. My posting chops need work. Anybody want to offer an online course on Volnation posting via mobile?

Wait? So the narrative that DeBord was good based off of total numbers is not true based off of the numbers from the first half of 7 games?....and it's from 7 of the 1st 8 games...meaning we have to throw out one of those games in order to make this not true?

Did I get that right?

Makes since to me now. He sucked. Good riddance.

Since you didn't get much traction I will be a little more concise. Would the first 5 SEC games, that made or broke the season, make more sense to reference? :)

The game plans OC Debord developed and executed worked poorly in the first half of the first 5 SEC games. The most they scored in each of those games was 7 points, for a total of 31 points. They were behind at half time in each of those 5 games. They won only 2 of those 5 games. As a result the D played many more snaps than they normally would have played. That contributed to the late season collapse of the defense and can be argued the increased injury issues from the start of the season. It also put huge pressure on the O in the second halves and in the last 4 games of the season to score quickly and often.

One of several good reasons to look forward to his replacement.

and before folks get riled up, when I say the poster doesn't know anything, it's not a personal attack. I am stating they have no relevant inside information, and are dealing in the realm of speculation.

Basketball officials cover more than one conference, but the SEC has a set number of officials in a pool. So, yes, you will see the same ones on a weekly basis.

For instance, Teddy V. officiates the SEC, Big 10, and maybe one other smaller conference. They try to get in as many games as they can in a week.

I know a guy that officiates for several smaller conferences. He usually leaves work really early on Fridays and drives all weekend to do two or three games. If they are all like that they have got to be tired and prone to missing calls.

Bottom line is it needs to be outside hire. Upgrading Azzani, who has only had one year of OC experience at a G5 school, or Scott, who has never been an OC before at any level, just increases the perception that Butch is a sinking ship nobody is willing to hitch themselves to and that Butch is unwilling to adapt or work outside of his own network.

If Butch wants to carry any momentum into 2017, he needs to bring in Kelly, Helfrich, or some other well regarded offensive mind from outside.

This has been brought up the last few years. There is a site that tracks each official, and some of the top ones officiate multiple games in a week. I think I remember that some of them will officiate 70-80+ games a year.

I was all for Helfrich at first as well. However, after some research, he appears to have limited success as an official OC without Kelly calling the plays. He isn't what I would call a homerun hire. I do believe our system will work fine. We need to find a guy that truly understands how to adapt a system to his star players, and isn't afraid to punch the gas all game. We could have won some games at the end if we would have simply went for the kill much earlier.

Absolutely right. He's the coach and can do what he wants, but I think this hire is going to be very telling on his future here.

It's curious. With the O coming out and jumping on leads in 2015 were there tendencies that were observed that contributed to the slow starts in 2016. Seems like the 2015 offense when not confronting a smothering d-line could virtually score at will gobbling up large pieces of real estate. Maybe it was the focus on attempting to establish Hurd more this year. It's curious.

I'm okay with taking a chance on Scott at OC if we bring in a proven QB coach to help develop JG. Wouldn't be my first choice, but if we're not going out and getting Helfrich or a top OC, we could do worse imo

We may not get Helfrich but people claiming he can't call good offense without Kelly or Mariota don't know what they are talking about. That is just assumptions based on overall program decline. His failures were in recruiting philosophy and making wrong defensive hire. I watched several Oregon games last two years after Mariota. The offense was just as explosive with Vernon Adams at QB. He also did a good job with this true freshman this year once he took over the job.

It sure does seem like Scott to me with all these talk today. I can get behind that but would have some skepticism on lack of play calling experience. He is a very bright coach though.

I like the idea of a CO-OC/ QB coach with Scott as the other OC. I think he needs someone to bounce ideas off of as he grows into an OC

That's what I think ends up happening

I'd rather bring someone proven in, but Scott seems to be well respected. Who knows what could happen.

We can't do that BC butch refuses to budge on his philosophy. It's a good playbook, but you need a mobile QB and guy who will call a variety of plays rather then running the same thing over and over when it's not working. I wish he would mix thing up some and put the QB under center and have a few I formation plays, may e have so.e.plays with different blocking schemes to keep teams guessing

You know, I am not sure it is true that the offense played more complementary football with Hurd out. Sure he played in the Bama game, and only a half against USC but both of these were post concussion. Winning percentage was higher with Hurd healthy. I know many want to withhold style points for how the games were called with Hurd playing but the facts are the facts.

Hiring Scott seems like forcing it. The guy has never been an OC, and this is THE pivotal season for Butch again (until 2018 becomes THE pivotal season after a couple of losses). Frankly, if we hire ZA or LS, it's going to be a downgrade from Debord. Those guys may end up being hall of fame OCs, but Tennessee, next year, is not the time or place to roll the dice.
