Is Helfrich @ OC a legit discussion?

1974 must have been a bad year, it seems every poster that has 74 and Vol in their name is anti-Vol?

In June 1974 my Mother had to fly down to Atlanta and get me out of jail. Got popped the night before the Georgia Jam, a show at the old Fulton County Stadium. Allman Brothers headlined, with Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band opening. So, yeah, it ain't my favorite year.

The worse part was missing out on the Allman Bros I'm sure. Musically, they're probably the best concert I've ever been to and one of my favorite bands of all time.

August of 74 I was at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the big weekend August Jam show. Emerson, Lake and Palmer [spinning piano act], Allman Bros., Black Oak Arkansas et al.......awesome show. Biggest show since Woodstock. Gates went down early on and it was a free for all. lol

Although I wouldnt mind Helfrich coming to UT. Unless Debord is leaving I am not too concerned with the offense. Yes the O line needs some help and having a QB coach is needed and play calling has sucked at points. We lost three games this year because our defense is/was garbage. When we score 30+ per game we should be winning games.

Debord has left the building so...

I'm seeing a lot of stuff about Helfrich possibly being courted to Tennessee as an offensive coordinator. I think it would be a home run hire obviously, but is this at all possible? Butch would have to actually be a little more open with his staff if he were hired. Hopefully Butch can delegate a little more.

Helfrich or any OC probably will not be decided until a new AD is selected!!!!! :hi:

Lo freaking l. You think Butch is gonna change anything if no one leaves? You think he's gonna handover his offense to someone else? What have you seen to give you that idea? Even if DeBord leaves, he'll just promote Azzanni to OC and Sheridan to QB coach.

Butch doesn't think anything is wrong with his system

right, butch is too insecure to hire a more talented coach. he's going to keep in the family until he's fired.

If they do, it's because they see an opportunity to be the interim and take his job next year when he's fired after 5 games. Only reason I could see Helfrich here.

What? he was gosh awful as a head coach at Oregon, worse record every year after Kelly left. his recruiting was not good at Oregon either, which is a hell of a lot easier than at Tennessee, recruiting against the sec.
I just don't see the appeal . heck he hired that boob brady hoke to run his defense. how did that work out.?

I heard a caller say he didn't call his own plays under Kelly or as the head coach. This is a concern if true, does anyone know if this is the case?

I agree with you. Maybe I didn't word I correctly. That's why I like Larry Scott as OC. I'll be okay with Helfrich but Larry is a better hire in my opinion.

There will be debate and speculation over how much of the offense Helfrich called vs. Kelly. There will be questions about him as a recruiter.

But here's one thing we DO know about him. He can develop a QB and that's what we need right now. He found, recruited and developed Mariota and that's not debatable.

Will he be the savior? Who knows. But his ceiling is high and we could do a lot worse. In addition, he could be an attractive OC for recruits.

2013 he was 11-2
2014 13-2 NC game vs Ohio St.
2015 9-4
2016 4-8
One bad season. Apparently he was not too bad and he recruited Mariota.

Agree with all the above except Mariota. Mariota (while was an amazing QB and I love my Titans too) was a unanimous 3 star. Not many people were beating down his door. However, that should show what he did with Mariota will help JG.

well Oregon thought the train was off the track, and he was the engineer. they fired his ass. do we really know he recruited Mariota and made him an outstanding qb? :dunno:

Yes. We do know this. He scouted, identified, and recruited Mariota. And he developed him.

He did not call plays. He did call plays at Colorado as OC between 2006-08 before going to Oregon with Kelly

Legal weed and Nike $$ should win a recruiting national championship every year.

That being said, I am good with Helfrich as an OC. Big difference in being a great OC and a great HC. See Norv Turner....multiple times.

Wait, wait, wait, is this really true or are you just spitballing it here?

Why are we wanting this guy as our OC when he hasn't called plays in 7-8 years - just to be our QB coach??

Is that an improvement over Debord?

This might not even be happening if this is the case.
