Debord to Indiana as OC

Wow. I had a feeling that CMD was a temporary hire for Jones from the beginning. I thought he actually did a decent job. Nothing off the charts, but good enough for us to reach our goals this year had we not had a defensive collapse.

I was disappointed in situational play calling in the OU and UF games in 2015. In 2015, I thought the game planning and early scripts were extremely successful, while the in game adjustments were flat. But, in 2016, it seemed to be the opposite. Early game planning and scripts seemed to be flat. While in game adjustments were spectacular, minus Vandy. I put USC on Dobbs. He was flat out terrible. Great player. Great career. One really bad game.

Thanks for the memories Mike. Best of success at Indiana. Now, bring on Helferich ... that would be sweet. I'm sure Butch is open to a guy who hung 60 on him while taking his foot off the gas in the 4th Q. :-o

This sums up my thoughts perfectly.

The thing is last year Jones actually went out and made an elite hire for DC. Obviously, for various reasons we didn't get the results from that hire we wanted but at the time it was the splash hire many of us never could have expected to happen at Tennessee. This gives me hope that he will do the same on this hire. Now, if he can land another elite coordinator and is willing to stay out of their way, he can do what he does best and that's reel in the talent needed for his coordinators systems. If all of this happens we will be fine and Butch Jones may very well end up being a championship coach in the future.

Fire Helfrich
It want be long till you hear that.
Helfrich was terrible at Colorado, that coaching staff he and Dan Hawkins put Colorado in the wilderness for years. He was mediocre at Arizona state and was good at Oregon until Chip Kelly left and then his players left, then he's 5 and 7 coach.

IF Butch has any doubt about his future at TN. with a new AD coming in, he needs to put any ego he may have aside and hire the absolutely right guy for the job even if it means giving up his own play-calling.That's just my opinion

Think that's just about everyone's opinion.

But he did recruit/develop Mariota and Darron Thomas before him.

I like Helrich, but fear he's too much of a risk of being a short timer and this could cause continuity issues on offense. I'd prefer Tee Martin who might be the replacement for HC in 3-5 years. What do you all think?

This is a little weird but we don't know the background details.

He could have quit because he and Jones had differences of opinion.

He could have quit because he thinks Jones is captain of a sinking ship.

He could have quit because Jones asked to make room for someone else.

He could have been asked to quit rather than being fired due to the early season issues and continued problems on the OL.

I HOPE Jones makes a good hire but the MOST critical hire is still the S&C coach. Development has to improve for Jones to have any chance of survival.

tee is not going to knoxville........

(would be fine if he wanted to, but the stars arent aligned for it)

edit: (if he came to oc he could be the coach in two years)

You are wrong, he wanted to redshirt Dobbs u dumba$$

If I recall, Mr. & Mrs. Dobbs wanted Josh to redshirt to be able to focus on his freshmen engineering courses and be well grounded in the basics.

It seems he handled both well; but the redshirt could have stayed on and the Dobbs would have been happy.

That's certainly been a problem at bama.

Martin has already shown he's not coming here for a lateral move. Also, Butch isn't leaving on his own in 3-5 years, so either he's still here doing well or he's fired and the new coach replaces Martin with his guy. Zero chance he's hired in as any sort of coach in waiting.

If you look at successful programs, most of their coordinators are short term. They either come in, succeed, and move up.... or they come in and fail then get fired. There are some very good career coordinators out there... but usually the better ones want to be HC's.

I don't think Tee sees himself as a career OC.

At first, I was totally wanting Helfrich. After some consideration, I am not sure he is the guy to get her done. His resume looks great, but when you start looking at the small details there are some questions I would have for him. Who was actually calling plays at Oregon? If the answer is Chip, I would keep looking. Would coach Z and Scott work well as CO-OCs? Who knows, but Helfrich isn't a sure fire home run.

I will make one prediction and that is no matter who the new Coordinator is at least half the board will hate him.
