Debord to Indiana as OC

It’s clear that Helfrich knows how to develop quarterbacks: He did it with Bart Hendricks at Boise State, and he did it with Andrew Walter and Carpenter at Arizona State, and he did it with Darron Thomas at Oregon; he has done it with Mariota, but is he a good fit for UT? He's a west coast guy. The last west coast guys we had went back west. We don't need a one and done, we need someone who's committed for the long haul.

Helfrich wouldn't be committed for the long haul to any school where he'd be OC. I'm sure he's looking to turn any successful OC stint into another HC job, and that's fine.

If he did a good job at Tennessee, the OC opening when he left would attract a lot of good candidates, even if he was here for only a couple years.

Thing about OCs, if they're really good they're not around for the long haul.

EDIT: ...or, what 05na said. lol

So my post was dumb and your only response was 'Dobbs threw the ball'. No sh1t genius. But he also ran the ball effectively when our sieve of an O-line allowed the opposing teams D-linemen to run free in the backfield. Personally, I think anytime you actually discuss football it's generally dumb. But that's neither here nor there. Carry on being an energy vampire on the boards.

Dobbs ran for a ton of yards for a QB because of something people who watch football call a "keeper". Look it up, it's a popular thing now in college football offenses.

DeBord was a very good OC and I can use just about any statistical metric you want to justify it.

DeBord will probably get a raise from Indiana and Jones, if he can get past his ego, gets a chance to upgrade.

DeBord’s annual salary of $505,000 ranks 92nd among 1,166 FBS assistant coaches

Could be a win/win if Jones gets outside his comfort zone and gets a Helfrich or proven coordinator. HUGE if though.

Most coordinator contracts are about 3 years in length. So it's understood going in that most of these guys will generally move after 3 years. Still think a hire like Helfrich could revitalize the program, assuming Butch let's him do his thing.

why would Scott get it? He has already said that if a HC position comes open he's gone, so why would we promote someone to OC that will most likely be gone in a year?

and if ya'll cant put the pieces together with Helfrich at bowl practice and this news coming out today, you need help. This Debord moving thing has been in the making for sometime.

I get what you say but if Scott is waiting on a HC job wouldn't Helfrich be waiting on one too?? Guy just got canned at Oregon and he'll get offered another job soon. He may become the Tennessee OC but it won't be for more than 1-2 years

No way Butch brings in someone he can't have offensive control over. Helfrich is a smarter offensive mind than Butch and Butch's ego can't handle that. I bet Larry Scott gets the nod. Alabama has a former HC as its OC and we're gonna end up with a guy who's never called plays. That's the difference between us and Bama right now

He was interim at UM when Golden got canned. He won 4 of the last 5 games and finished 8-4. He might have called a few plays somewhere along the line.

Indeed the numbers speak for themselves, the Vols offense set many records last year under Debord, the offense wasn't the problem, the defense was terrible

Not really. If Butch was insisting that a OC/QB coach be brought in, that would lead to a demotion of Debord to OL or at best, co OC. Either way it's perceived as a demotion. Debord obviously wasn't ready to retire so he took the opportunity to make a lateral move. The question is will Butch be able to fill the OC job with someone as good or better than Debord?

My guess is Jones already has the man in place...just not announced yet. I'm thinking it will be a great hire!
