Last year we had some misses recruiting wise, it just seems this year we had more misses and had to look a little further down our wish list than we did last year save a couple of positions.

Others say we are recruiting depth and players that fit our particular needs. How do the respected posters here lean on this topic?

From what I can see we have trended downward the past couple of years.

Hiring a search firm when the obvious AD hire is 112 miles away and doing the exact same job in the exact same university system while having tremendous success is a classic Tennessee move.

This is why we can't have a winning athletic department. Can't get out of our own way. When you have career academics in charge of athletics, you have this type of dysfunction.

This is akin to coming into a movie in the third act and asking who the characters are.

Wow... Since P Williams left, Perry left, and Malone probably leaving, do we have to keep Byrd at WR now?

Unfortunately it probably won't happen if that all plays out. I think they still should as you can still find production from a group consisting of Jennings, Smith, Johnson, George, Callaway, Williams, Murphy, Fant, Jones IMO. I think Byrds benefit to defense would be greater than on offense based on who would play instead of him if he was on the other side. You can still insert him in certain packages on offense.

Doug Matthews said the other day the UTK athletics department used to not report to the UTK chancellor but instead they had a direct line into the central system head office (not sure the particulars). Regardless he cited that as a reason for our decline across the board athletically. Said we'd have our AD now and coaching changes would have happened if we didn't have to wait for the hiring of this new chancellor.

She's not going to make herself popular that's for sure.

I would hire a firm to do background on candidates A-D with a hire of this magnitude, but I wouldn't want the firm to find me the candidates in the first place.

Yes, our ad used to report directly to the university system President, now Depetrio. I think this has contributed to our dysfunction.

Well, maybe his veteran team ended up with big egos that he couldn't control. That is on him. But sometimes, when they leave, you are left with talented team-first players, who are trying to prove themselves. The east won't be that much better.

OMG, that made sense. It's seems like the last 2 months this website is awful. Apparently none of these members actually coach.

UT football: We are a top ten program in history.
UT Administration: Burn it down.
UT football: But...
UT Administration: We said burn it with mattresses!

I personally don't see the need since the only thing they have in common is they both catch balls from the QB.

Byrd seems like a first round talent at DB to me so I hope they make the move. Could have used him there this season too.

This. We need CB so badly.

I will say this: the search firm that Memphis has used for the last 2 football coaching hires did a heck of a job. Search firms have contacts that others don't.

All of that said, there is no reason in this case. We all know (maybe except the important people) who we should hire, and we know his background.

Oh great this lady is going to botch it and be the most hated person on campus before she even sets official footing on it

I think most academicians consider it their goal to be hated by the "meatheads" in the AD. Their purpose of education is higher than some dumb game, etc...

Basilio was talking about the AD search as well. Maybe he got his info from Hubbs, but it does seem to be the way the administration is heading. We are seriously going to screw the pooch here. Basilio believes that they are trying to delay and give Blackburn so many hoops to jump through that he removes himself from consideration and they can claim that they tried to hire him but he didn't want it. TIFIW.

Contribute or move on, I don't require you to acknowledge my post and I'm fairly certain you aren't one of the respected posters I asked the opinions or consensus of.

Yep, I was about to post this. They may screw around so long that Blackburn says that he is done with the process.

Don't screw up your very first hire lady!
