Vincent Perry is leaving UT.

Two days before its final game of the 2016 season, Tennessee isn’t just losing a scholarship player --- it’s losing a player from the MidState area.

Former three-star standout Vincent Perry, who had been promised a chance to play both baseball and football at the University of Tennessee, has left Rocky Top and has indicated no intention of returning after the holiday break, according to numerous sources here in Music City.

Perry, a wideout whom UT sources said would have played this year had he been healthy and eligible, will exit with an eye toward playing baseball.

He arrived at Tennessee in the same class as fellow Hillsboro standout Kyle Phillips, and the Vols also are recruiting current Burros standout Javonta Payton. However, Phillips has been only a role player to this point and while Perry struggled academically in the spring when he was not permitted to play baseball as had been promised, he has posted fine academic marks in this fall semester, per sources with intimate knowledge of the situation.

I think the argument was that he was too hands on micromanaging position coaches, coordinators, etc whilst (in hindsight) he was much too hands off with the S&C program and captains in 2016.

I kinda give him a pass on the latter since the perception from most beat writers and those following UT football spent all spring and offseason harping on how strong the leadership was from the captains, seniors, and upperclassmen leaders. But obviously some of those guys weren't as good at being leaders as we thought/expected, which was a surprise.

I think that's one lesson Butch is sure not to forget.

When they spoke to the crowd at the spring game, I was underwhelmed. Did not sound like leaders.

If Byrd were to be moved to corner, weren't Perry and the Florida speedster the two to replace him at slot?

For now, it remains obvious per UT staff members here in Nashville that all expectations are that both Don Mahoney and Willie Martinez are coaching their final games on the UT staff, whether that’s deemed fair or otherwise.

Additionally, it remains clear that UT is going to need a full-time, on-field quarterbacks coach --- Nick Sheridan no longer can be legally milked in an auxiliary position, and he’s too good for that anyway --- plus must decide if it wants Steve Stripling to remain on the field or in a chief of staff type of role. Those are the only true mysteries.

UT unequivocally has had contact with DL, QB and DB coaches --- including guys previously mentioned such as Brady Hoke (DL), Mark Helfrich (QB) and Terry Fair (Dbs). While Fair has had multiple conversations with some of Butch Jones’ closest advisers and fellow Michigan natives, it is Hoke who has the most contact and perhaps the most momentum to join the Vols’ staff.

My optimism is starting to be really tested.

Especially as far as lasting success. I think we have a good shot at the East again next season. But going past next year, and maybe 2018 at the latest, I'm starting to get pretty worried.

Thankfully, uga is the only team in the east that looks like it could turn into a juggernaut, and the jury is still way, way out on Smart being a good coach or not

So he's leaving to go elsewhere and focus on baseball? Maybe he thinks he has a better chance at a pro future in baseball, and is concerned about his knee holding up on the football field.

Strip must be wanting to back off of the hours he's putting in. I get the sense he still wants to be affiliated with the program, but not as a coach, which requires him to log a ton of hours and travel.

So, better DL coach and recruiter...Strip or Hoke? I think Hoke is a step down honestly.

However, if he was promised a shot at baseball and then was refused, that is not a good thing for the coaching staff's rep. That's really disgusting on our part.

Recruiting next year will go as our season goes, which will mainly be determined by QB play. If QD or JG come out and kill it, we'll win 9 or 10 and we will do well in 2018 recruiting. If we struggle at QB this year, we'll....

The last part of that Perry nugget sounds like some slant from Brice.

Thought the same when I initially read it. From reading Brice's entire article this morning, it just read like he's ticked off about several things going on at UT. For two weeks in a row he has talked about administrative folks being wrongfully "forced" out.

To be honest, if Perry can't keep his grades up when not playing baseball, then how can he do it when also playing baseball? He seems to have corrected it by not playing at all. I always wondered if he would be back. People are fooling themselves if they were banking on his return.

Did you take that we lied about him getting to play baseball or that he couldn't play because of grades?

Just the whole thing read like Brice is inserting himself into the article.

He's implying that Perry couldn't make the grades because he wasn't allowed to play baseball. And then he is throwing in the Kyle Phillips is a role player to this point? And that we are recruiting a 2018 kid? What does all that have to do with Perry (who has barely played and wasn't even eligible this fall) leaving?

I don't know about results, but I think Hoke is probably a better recruiter. It's hard to argue Stripling's results.

I think Hoke is a better recruiter but probably not a better coach. I haven't been ecstatic since Hoke's name popped up. I don't think he's that great, and it's just another Butch coaching connection.

I think Strip has been made to look better than he is because of Barnett's sack numbers.

Hoke would be an upgrade overall IMO.
