Two days before its final game of the 2016 season, Tennessee isnt just losing a scholarship player --- its losing a player from the MidState area.
Former three-star standout Vincent Perry, who had been promised a chance to play both baseball and football at the University of Tennessee, has left Rocky Top and has indicated no intention of returning after the holiday break, according to numerous sources here in Music City.
Perry, a wideout whom UT sources said would have played this year had he been healthy and eligible, will exit with an eye toward playing baseball.
He arrived at Tennessee in the same class as fellow Hillsboro standout Kyle Phillips, and the Vols also are recruiting current Burros standout Javonta Payton. However, Phillips has been only a role player to this point and while Perry struggled academically in the spring when he was not permitted to play baseball as had been promised, he has posted fine academic marks in this fall semester, per sources with intimate knowledge of the situation.
I think the argument was that he was too hands on micromanaging position coaches, coordinators, etc whilst (in hindsight) he was much too hands off with the S&C program and captains in 2016.
I kinda give him a pass on the latter since the perception from most beat writers and those following UT football spent all spring and offseason harping on how strong the leadership was from the captains, seniors, and upperclassmen leaders. But obviously some of those guys weren't as good at being leaders as we thought/expected, which was a surprise.
I think that's one lesson Butch is sure not to forget.
Additionally, it remains clear that UT is going to need a full-time, on-field quarterbacks coach --- Nick Sheridan no longer can be legally milked in an auxiliary position, and hes too good for that anyway --- plus must decide if it wants Steve Stripling to remain on the field or in a chief of staff type of role. Those are the only true mysteries.
UT unequivocally has had contact with DL, QB and DB coaches --- including guys previously mentioned such as Brady Hoke (DL), Mark Helfrich (QB) and Terry Fair (Dbs). While Fair has had multiple conversations with some of Butch Jones closest advisers and fellow Michigan natives, it is Hoke who has the most contact and perhaps the most momentum to join the Vols staff.

My optimism is starting to be really tested.
Especially as far as lasting success. I think we have a good shot at the East again next season. But going past next year, and maybe 2018 at the latest, I'm starting to get pretty worried.
Thankfully, uga is the only team in the east that looks like it could turn into a juggernaut, and the jury is still way, way out on Smart being a good coach or not
The last part of that Perry nugget sounds like some slant from Brice.
Did you take that we lied about him getting to play baseball or that he couldn't play because of grades?
Strip must be wanting to back off of the hours he's putting in. I get the sense he still wants to be affiliated with the program, but not as a coach, which requires him to log a ton of hours and travel.
So, better DL coach and recruiter...Strip or Hoke? I think Hoke is a step down honestly.
