Travis, when ESPN let you go did you decide then that riding the wave of a "dumpster fire" story based off your own alma mater would be the easiet way to become some what relevant?
Also how do you personally feel, as a journalist, about writing mostly anonymous sourced stories and slanting them to fit a narrative?
Beginning in 2015, when I was still with ESPN, I wanted to write about Tennessee ... regardless what happened in the ensuing season(s). I find it a fascinating story - with a program trying to get "back" and struggling with instability in so many different ways. So, in truth, this is a story I started reporting years ago. The timing felt right to me as we arrived at the end of a disappointing 2016 season. Is 8-4 a disappointing record for Tennessee in the scope of the past decade? No, it isn't. But it most certainly is in this particular season -- especially considering Florida and Georgia were wins ... and South Carolina and Vanderbilt were losses.
I don't have an ego. I don't concern myself with "clicks" or "relevancy." That doesn't motivate me. I wanted to tell the story of the current state of Tennessee football. This is what came from that desire. I didn't expect it to be received well by everyone. It's uncomfortable for some, maybe. But I believe it's an accurate portrayal of how Tennessee is viewed internally and externally.
In all honesty did you really not expect this kind of backlash?
Or did the upper tier encourage you to do it to drive clicks and controversy?
The feedback has legitimately been 50-50 positive/negative. That's what I expected it to be -- and it's what I was told to expect by those who cover the team.
Haney, If you indeed have no axe to grind with CBJ, and the vols, why write a story about the culture at UT, and with all that is going on at U. of Oklahoma, let them slide? Not a word , not a tweet, just silence about them.
Actually, I tweeted about OU the other day -- on Friday, when the video went public. I voiced disappointment that the administration had already made up its mind how it would react, saying it had dealt with this in the past. It's not like OU is getting a pass from me or anyone else. Again, I had been following/reporting on the Tennessee story for years -- and directly for weeks. We had started working on taking the temperature at UT just before the "Champions of Life"/Vandy loss.
Seeing how several local media has said they have no idea who he talked to to get those negative opinions, I don't think his story is accurate.
takes all kinds. See:

So he waited to start the story until something negative happened rather than when the program was full of positivity? lol jesus
Haney, if you were doing a season-long story about the University of Tennessee, and the culture surrounding it - why not wait until the end of the season to release the article?
The end of the regular season, to me, is essentially the end of the season. The bowl game, in my view, is almost a springboard to 2017. Maybe a win against Nebraska alters the current perception. Maybe a loss damages it. But it doesn't change any of what has already transpired -- particularly the parts about the strength program. That was probably the biggest surprise I encountered in the story. I didn't realize how profound that loss was in regard to how the season played out. But even thinking about the struggle physically in the App game, it makes sense in hindsight and context.
Travis,
1. Obviously the headline is the main problem. We know an editor wrote it, but he/she isn't here. Clearly that is all ppl see in this day, with most ppl only reading the headline. I know you have talked to this editor. Why wasn't a positive quote used as the headline? We know why honestly, and that is why this piece is pure crap
2. Are you telling us that not one "source" you spoke with had anything positive to say? Or did you leave those quotes out? Be careful with your answer here. Because I know that the vast majority of players/coaches/admins think your story is crap. So once again do you see the pattern? Choosing the offensive quote as headline/not including or trying to find anyone to speak positive. See the issue? That's what TMZ does
3. Why did you go on 104.5 and lie about how you got Hoods contact? And you also said on 1045 that you and John/Wes/Ryan got together before the story to see if that's what they are hearing. Well that's not accurate, and it's not what they are hearing.
Make no mistake, I agree Butch needs to be much better at hiring coaches. Started with Pittman and has continued. I agree with the S&C issues. The issue, that you act naive about is the headline was ridiculous. And whomever said it is an idiot and either has an axe to grind, or just isn't paying attn. because Butch is a lot of things, but culture isn't one of them. A culture of disaster is going 2-14 in the SEC, having ZERO relationships with TN HS coaches, zero relationships with your players, ZERO relationships with former player, and APR so low it's obvious kids aren't going to class. That was Dooley. So, if you were an objective reporter these are things you would known. The fact that Butch has reversed all of that is something I am proud of him doing, even if I have issues with other things. These are things you could have mentioned to counterpoint the idiot that said that stupid uninformed idiotic quote. As a seasoned reporter you should have recognized that and either not used the quote at all, or at least counterpointed it with facts to show how stupid the quote was. Also, have you paid attention to what's happening at Ole Miss? Talk about a culture that is a disaster.
And, lastly, Butch being #2 on your list is also obviously transparent. Especially when you leave out most all the other SEC coaches who went 8-4 or worst but didn't lost its ENTIRE DL and best D players. You think Auburn or A&M goes 8-4 with those injuries? Maybe a story about how these coaches overcame that. Wait, that would be positive. My bad.
1. I've addressed the headline.
2. There are positives in there. They're being glossed over.
3. I do not lie. What do I gain from lying - about anything? Call me an idiot or whatever you'd like, but I take offense to being called a liar - by anyone.
