'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

You're smoking something if you don't think Freeze is melting on his seat. LSU didn't even know who their coach was for most of the season. FSU could lose Fisher at any moment or after next season to the pros. Saban could retire in the next few years. Kirby Smart is disaster to this point.

Recruiting is not going to be elite again? What do you consider elite? We've averaged a top 9 class over the past 4 years with this staff, and 2 of those classes finished in the top 5. This year will probably finish as a top 10 or better class.

Read the above post. Fisher just got an extension with a $45M buyout. He's not going anywhere soon.

- 247 (Newberg)

FSU had 3 losses compared to TNs 4 but they did just secure Jimbo for several more years.

The opportunity for early playing time is far and away better at UT than FSU. Unfortunately, doesn't sound like that was much of an issue in Akers recruitment.

All things considered TNs recruiting held up fairly well. Looks like we'll finish in the Top 20 in most services, with a slight possibly of Top 15 with Rivals and Scout. That projection is based on current rankings on 247, Rivals, ESPN, Scout. Several teams currently ranked ahead and behind us with fewer commitments making it nearly impossible to finish in the Top 10 on any service.

Prediction: 2017 class finishes #17 in 247 Final Team Rankings.

GO VOLS!!!

I don't think he's a threat to jump to the pros, but buyouts are nothing to them. Almost every franchise sells for a billion plus!

I'd say you're probably right. If anything, he'd probably go to another college. Maybe Ala**ma if Saban were to retire?

Last year'a class was good but we finished at 15 and we will likely finish there again this year. Top 15 classes sound good until you realize that's the bottom half of the SEC. Hugh Freeze will not be fired unless the NCAA gets him. His seat is warming up but they had a rough season in terms of injuries and had to play a tough schedule. Their fans were pretty forgiving. It doesn't matter that LSU didn't know who their coach was during the season. What matters is they know who their coach is now.

So Akers is back to an EE now? I can't keep up.

I would feel so much better about our chances if he held off on committing until right before NSD but if he is for sure an EE than I don't feel good about it. I felt we had a good chance leading into the dead period but it sounds like FSU made the best of that in house visit right before the dead period and now he's leaning that way with little chance of us changing his mind. I sure do hope I am wrong though. I will eat crow for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the 27th if so.

That would cause a panic that $44 mil would only serve to smear the bottoms of shoes! Would be like after Bear! Best candidate to play or coach for Saban would be top choice. Then Dabo and on down. Money would be no object to thwart the hire of the next Mike Dubose or Shula!

Hubbs sounds a little optimistic. I still think RG gives us a chance here

the best recruiting win by CRG to date and would be HUGE, no doubt. I've said it before and will one more time-FSUs roster at RB offers less opportunity for Akers than TNs. I don't think there is much of a debate from that perspective. Regardless how this plays out TN held up well in recruiting given all the adversity this season. The amount of injuries were unprecedented, no excuses just unprecedented.

Why do you defend Freeze when this is exactly what happened to Jones at UT and we still finished with a much better record?

The point is not that they didn't know who their (LSU) coach was, but that he is a new coach and all new coaches have majority support of the fans.

So, what do you consider elite recruiting? Can you point to the teams that have recruited better than UT over a 4 year period (since Jones' arrival)?

I think you'll find that the teams that have recruited higher ranked classes on average would be considered the cream of the crop in the recruiting world. So, is Tennessee the first team in that list to not be considered recruiting at an elite level? I don't think so. If you do, can you say why? Are you biased toward the coaches? Is there a specific # rank where you say, "Only the top __ classes have the most elite talent, anything after isn't on the same level"?

I soured on butch immediately after the vandy game but I've come back around to supporting him since the initial frustration has worn off.

You do realize it's been proven that to even have a chance at competing for national titles you have to average top 10 classes? And while, yes that's what we have averaged, we are currently trending away from that. As far as teams that are recruiting at an elite level: bama, FSU, OSU, Georgia, So Cal, and Michigan are the ones that come to the forefront. But I know you're just going to miss my point and try to argue that our average isn't far off from them even though my point is that we're trending in the wrong direction

Too much credence to Ole Miss. it's like us and Memphis.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Sure, kids in Memphis may not grow up being UT fans.. but we still reel them in. And when we do -- "I'm staying home to rep my state." Because we are Tennessee's school. And Memphis is in Tennessee (geographically speaking at least).

Based on how he perceivedly takes pride in his home state, I predict something similar will be said by Cam when he chooses Ole Miss next week.

I'm essentially right here with you. I was extremely frustrated after that loss and still am. I am back to the point to where I believe that if Butch makes the right hires he can still win here. I think he isn't given enough credit for winning 8 games when he dealt with more injuries than any other team in the country as far as I am aware. He was not perfect this year, far from it, but I'm cautiously optimistic. He needs a big season next year tho

Totally agree with all of this. What's frustrating is that I think butch can be a great coach. I think most Tennessee fans agree. He just needs to stop getting in his own way

OR until Vol fans support their coach.

Because the fans didn't give him 4 years...

Being upset about it is fine. Thinking that it's going to get any better than 8-9 wins is lying to yourself.

I've gotten over the Vandy loss but if Butch doesent tell his buddies to see themselves out and bring in good coaches this ship is already sunk and Butch is the captain.

Right which is what I'm getting at

Well you can't be one way during the season and then make a 180 turnaround when it's apparent the fanbase's lack of support for the coach is hurting recruiting. That needs to be apparent all the time. Fair weather fans are just another distraction that coaching staffs have to overcome. And when they can spew their opinion at the speed of sound over social media, it's just that more difficult.

Why can't we just support the team? We've proven as a fanbase that we suck at choosing the starting quarterback from Brandon Stewart, to A.J. Suggs to Riley Ferguson. We also have a poor track record at coaching evaluations over the last several years. Why not stick with what we know?

If the buzz around certain guys turn into actual hires it will go a long way with most fans. If it doesn't happen Butch is essentially Les Miles and is fired after Georgia.

How did he not get enough credit for winning 8? Injuries didn't start catching up until the SC game I think. Tennessee still should have won that game and Vandy too.

With all the new pieces coming in a big seaon just isn't in the cards, IMO.

By looking over the attendance figures, it's clear that we do.
