NCAA announces an investigation into Tennessee for some small infraction while ignoring big ones in Oxford, Tuscaloosa, Raleigh and other places.
The black cloud is looming heavily.
Tennessee fails to hire a big name, and because of the time it took Gilbert and his cronies to work through the big names, misses on the up-and-comers.
Gilbert in a move of desperation hires Quarles on the cheap.

Boulwear will probably be out for spring. If he didn't pass enough classes to play in the bowl he will be ineligible for spring as well.

That may be true, but I think a lot of it has to do with the sheer number of negative events at UT during his tenure. For example, he is taking blame for the Tyndall hire as well as the Title XI lawsuit and its ultimate settlement. There's stuff out there that he was against women's sports, which was further exacerbated by people thinking that he forced Pat Summitt to resign early. Moreover, he got flack for the Lady Vols brand being reduced to only women's basketball (people don't realize this had just as much to do with Nike as it did with Hart; the Lady Vol merchandise doesn't sell and Nike didn't want to carry all of it). Additionally, many out there don't like his communication skills, or lack thereof, as many didn't think he communicated often or effectively enough.

IMO, it was a combination of the above over his tenure that influenced a lot of decision-makers (and likely donors that are influential) to let his contract expire. Personally, I don't think Hart gets enough credit for his work here. There have been bumps in the road, but overall, I think he did a pretty good job, and he prioritized the right things most of the time. It's sort of a sad situation just considering the number of coaches he has had to hire in a pretty short stint here.

Hart didn't really do himself any favors with the way he handled most big decisions. They appeared to be bumbling, poorly thought out, and executed. He did a few things well but he's no big loss.

Besides Cam Akers, are there any remaining 5* (and no I am not a star gazer, just asking as I enjoy tracking), that are legitimately still considering UT?

Per 247 seems Cam is a long shot anyway, I would bet it's a lot like the Toneil Carter situation at Georgia if Kamara came back (he won't) Akers certainly won't come here.

Hart did what he was hired to do-- fix the financials and restructure UT's athletic programs under a "One Tennessee" branding initiative. It was a controversial mandate, but Hart made himself even more unpopular than anticipated.

All parties have known for years that he was not going to be extended and the transition should have been quick and seamless. And yet here we are.

He was hired to be a hatchet man, and that is almost always a transitory hire. He lost critical support in 2014 and ensuing decisions made it virtually impossible to keep him. It should be a positive change.

I agree but is wasn't just one booster. Like I said he wanted their money and didn't want to grant much access. I agree it wasn't all about pissing off boosters but that was some part of it. He wasn't liked a whole lot amongst many boosters.
