Fournette and now McCaffery decide to not play in their bowl games.

Good Bye Bowl system. Major players refusing to risk injury for a meaningless game. It was a nice run.

Those two literally have millions of dollars at risk. Gotta ask yourself is it worth it to play a meaningless game and risk throwing away life changing money?

Ehh, those two guys had injury riddled seasons and decided to make a business decision. I can't really blame them.

When perfectly healthy players start dipping before their bowl games, then you're onto something.

Yep, the current playoff system has rendered bowls meaningless. The better ones are a good trip for the players, but what is the point?

A majority of the bowls were meaningless before the playoffs. All the players get a trip and get gifts for going. I don't mind cutting a few of them because there are too many. But the system itself is fine.

I agree with getting rid of some bowls. Especially since the new bowls pretty much need 5-7 teams so the bowl can be played

Eh, if the organizations that run the bowls and sponsor the bowls don't have any financial issues with putting the bowl on, I don't have a problem with an extra few college football games being in TV.

It's not like they hurt anyone.

Have always felt the same way. If I don't want to watch a crappy game, I simply bypass it on the tv. Let the players and their fans have one more chance.

The thing is, I think most programs lose money going to bowls. Good for the kids, sure, but eventually the bottom line will win.

Going to be a trend. Hopefully forces the NCAA to greatly expand the playoffs.

Fournette can claim lingering injury. He's a generational type back and at worst might drop a couple of spots. McCaffery is banking on a different kind of scouting report. Good athlete with that extra motor and drive. This kind of business decision could drop him a few rounds...hope so anyway. I know I know all the "why risk his career for a meaningless bowl blah blah blah" jazz! His lowly teammates gotta finish his work for him (at least he thanked em in a Tweet). GMs selecting players to join FUTURE teammates might consider that and wonder if he'll make a business decision for himself when the playoffs are on the line.

That supposes that the school is required to accept a bowl invitation. When a school accepts a bowl bid, there is obviously someone in the administration that sees some value in going. If more schools declined bids, obviously the number of bowls would be culled.

This. Why do people care? If you don't like it, don't watch it. I get so irritated every year with people whining about too many bowls. How is it hurting anyone so badly that they want them gone?

Or when the team is eliminated from the playoffs, is he going to bench himself to prepare for next year and his new contract?

I wish there was a NFL minor league. And yes I would still watch college football. It would actually make it more enjoyable to me. I don't watch pro sports much anymore precisely because of the mercenary selfishness that is inherent in them. Team sports are about TEAM, not individuals. I am sick of this crap. Now it is leaking all the way down to the HS level. You ask why should they risk it? Because without fans and teammates, the vast majority of which have no professional future, there would be no future to risk.

And ruin the regular season? No thanks. I'd rather they went back to no playoffs. Further expansion will make the regular season games we love so much become meaningless. And then we're college basketball, just waiting for March. Would be awful.

Totally agree. Said something like this to some friends who thought it was absurd. College football is beginning to lose what made it great.
