Basilio's page reporting that Gilbert is gaining momentum for AD 😞. They are going to screw this up aren't they?

Is this new? It was mentioned a few weeks ago, but then people started saying again Blackburn was gonna be the guy, and that some of those who were supporting Gilbert were ok with Blackburn. Has Gilbert regained momentum?

It was a contributor to Basilio's blog. Said Donna Thomas was campaigning for Gilbert...

GILBERT GAINING MOMENTUM? Hearing that UT deputy AD Jon Gilbert may be getting traction with certain boosters. Rumor is that administrator Donna Thomas has gone to bat for Gilbert, who came with Dave Hart from Alabama and who handled the search that culminated with the selection of Donnie Tyndall. For those of you not keeping score at home, Thomas presided over a UT Hall of Fame selection process than resulted in Gen. R.R. Neyland not being named to the inaugural UTAD men's and women's list.

Basilio's response:
Why am I not surprised by AD nugget? Donna Thomas seems like a nice lady, and they gave her something to do with that ill fated Hall of Shame (that she turned it into...more later). What's the over/under on how long she will be there if/when Blackburn gets the job? What are power people doing? Are they really going to listen to her? Look at that first HOF class!!! If you can find it anywhere!!! Do you know why you can't find it anywhere???? Because it's an abortion. No Neyland...No Fulmer....This place is INSANE.

And yes, Bammer Jon Gilbert is probably a pretty good guy but he's not the choice for this job. I love the self-preservation from Thomas. That's just too rich for words. This place makes me crazy. Can we please do what's best for the university and not what's best for her? And did I tell you that neither Neyland, nor Fulmer, nor Gus Manning, nor Ray Mears nor John Ward, nor Stan Huntsman nor Ray Buzzard were in HER silly Hall of Fame. This place beats everything. If they let her get her way, I'm going to perhaps get out here. Enough is enough already. This is stupid. If they give Bama Jon the job, I'm strongly considering saying adios.

Look....I love Donnie Tyndall....He's a great guy....But Jon Gilbert hired him after a 3 hour meeting. Plus he sat around and watched that Lady Vol debacle go down. Plus he was in place during the mishandling of that scandal. Do you think this is the guy we need to help Butch Jones save himself from himself? Do you think he'll challenge Rick Barnes to take the program to the top 3 in the SEC? That's what we need right now from an AD. Tennessee doesn't need a friend. Tennessee is crying out for somebody with roots to this place and somebody that will help shepherd coaches to make tough decisions. I've been telling you for weeks that I'll believe David Blackburn is the guy when I see it. I'm telling you that this is starting to really piss me off.

Who the hell is Donna Thomas? This absolute nobody wants to make an AD hire to save her own skin and the university might let it happen?

So many of UT's problems are self-inflicted. Poor hiring decisions and ineffective leadership have doomed UT for a decade. No wonder so many donors are getting really, really tired of tossing money into a leaky bucket.

Not sure I agree with Basilio. I'd never state that UTK connections should be a hindrance to getting a job in the AD and maybe those kind of connections could be a tiebreaker if everything else is equal. I do remember an acronym that was once prevalent on this board, GOBINS, and the ire that was directed at the Good Ole Boys In Neyland Stadium who threw up a protective bubble around Fulmer after the 2005 debacle rather than let the heat have a chance to do it's job. I don't think we've really had a "professional" AD since Dickey left. Bleeding Orange is important but it isn't the end all, be all when it comes to running the AD.

Callahan thinks Malone leaving is close to 50/50, but if he had to pick now he thinks he might leave early.

Will work with Gilbert to make UT a shining example of tolerance and diversity by hiring the first FBS female college football head coach.

Wouldn't surprise me. It sounds like we have 0 leadership with absolute morons running the show for the past 10 years. It's actually really sad

Is anyone else reporting this other than Basilio? Didn't some day just last week Blackburn had already made some rounds and LWS was confident of Blackburn very very recently. What the freaking hell happened?!!! Just burn the thing down, no leadership, bad decisions as always. If you are hiring Gilbert why the hell get rid of Hart? They are one in the same. And Gilbert's track record alone, along with the fact that he's never even been the head AD before should disqualify him from contention completely.

Even UK has higher expectations than this. We could have hired a HS coach for a fraction of CBJ's salary with a minimal buyout if we're willing to spot our HC an eight-year learning curve and accept midpack performance.
1)That's just not true, if UK constantly won 8 or 9 games a season they would never fire their head coach
2) we didn't "spot" an 8-year learning curve but yeah it does take time to build a roster to a point where winning the SEC can be a reasonable expectation. Butch is now at that point and so now he has a 3-4 year window to prove he can or can't do it.

It's not that I'm happy with 8 wins, it's what performance would get Butch fired. If Butch gets 8 or 9 wins next year he's not getting fired, and he goes into 2018 on a hot seat where it's SECCG or damn near close and he's gone.

SpringBokVol, are you hearing about momentum for Gilbert also? Please tell me Basilio is way off here. Tennessee is honestly going to eff this hire up before our eyes. After the Vanderbilt loss I thought people had wised up that Butch needs help not some buddy in the AD who doesn't challenge him.
