Not making a change at HC has nothing to do with Butch's potential, it's all about the message it would send to other coaches and how they could expect to be treated. Give him one more year out of principle and see what he does, if it's a bust, he has been given a fair chance to be successful. If he makes it to Atlanta then he has bought more time.

The SC and then the Vandy loss is enough to cut bait but the timing is off.

Precisely the point.

We have no idea whether Butch has reached his potential. Maybe so. Maybe not.

One thing's evident. If we'd cut bait on Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer after only four years, after each of them took a step back in # of wins, we'd never have won championships (SEC or national) with either of them.

Giving coaches time to age into the job isn't a practice of the past. It continues today with many programs, across all conferences.

Only time will tell with Butch.

The boosters made their millions and retained it by making wise decisions. They know more about what's going on with the program than I do. I would assume they think they are getting it right, whether I think they are or not.

they do attempt to make the right decisions. They invest money in the university because they care as well as whatever financial pluses it brings, tax breaks but getting the recognition. Lots of pluses for them I'm sure.

No one makes all the right decisions unfortunately. In life, business, family or school.

here is a couple of examples of their influence.. without details

The previous AD to the current AD didn't get it right and had to leave...

The current AD and Chancellor had their issues and have to leave.

Any potential new coaches will be given multiple year contracts.
(Find your own source to confirm if you like.)
But for the sake of conversation let's just take my word for it.

What does that tell you about the thought process among the boosters and the new management at UT?

Also, as for the general discussion in this thread, I can't wrap my mind around some people actually believing that the high level donors expect ANY sort of return on their money just because UT Football is "doing good".

That is too stupid for words.

You're probably right. Big businesses don't look for ANY edge possible to help them be more successful(make more money). They just stumble around and are just lucky when things goes well for them. No thought about ROI, certainly not when it comes to donations. Strategic donations could never benefit a business and they would never plan ANY benefits from said donations, that would be stupid on their part. Being stupid and acting all willy nilly with their millions is how most millionaires and billionaires got what they got.

Nah, your line of thinking is much more real world. Rich people getting richer just by accident.
