It seems like maybe SBV is not reading the article as merely an unbiased Vol fan. It is probably easier to defend it if you have some sort of connection to the author.

Personally, after reading it I'm embarrassed as an alum for UT's JEM program.

Any journalism major from any higher ed program should agree with you.

It was a HUGE issue that had a massive ripple effect.

It was the reason we started and ended the year the way we did.

Think it was a hit and click piece. It's how they make money. However, S and C and inmates running the asylum were my feelings just from watching this year along with several in game decisions popping up. Let his coaches coach and fix S and C and RUN the program then it can work. Must keep upgrading this class.

The fans and media want a winner but try their best to burn the mfkr down instead of helping. Damndest thing.

Well I disagree strongly that it is the media's job to help. I'm all for criticism of the Program's flaws, which are plentiful.

But this article, imo, wasn't remotely close to responsible journalism, was targeted and intentional, and unbecoming of a UT JEM grad. Tabloid fodder.

Debord still on staff with Helfrich working with QBs... yes please

Best case scenario.

Ole Helfrich running Butchs "power spread" and our playmakers? Oh hell yes.

I'm not advocating letting Debord go at OC.. just firing off on some rumors. Debord is a fine OC IMO

Sooo...back to some recruiting class discussion. How do you guys feel about the LB class now? Ignont, Henderson, Page and Reid. Pretty solid IMO. Left out MB cause...well..you know.

It deserves a HFY! for no other reason than Helfrich coaching JG, QD and SJ. He may not be the greatest OC in the world. He doesn't have to be. He is at least a really really good OC and excellent QB coach. That is enough for me to call it a great upgrade.

MB aside, I still think we'll see some changes between now and NSD when it comes to LB. If we finished with the 4 you mentioned we'd have to be pretty pleased.

The reason? As in, singular reason?

Guy was already involved in the program and took over 4 months before season. Three years of team building fell apart like that?

From what I am told, the players didn't want to do the workouts and eventually convinced Butch to run him off.

Once that happened the accountability on each player to develop and put in the work was gone.

The players let this trickle from the weight room to the practice field to the playing field.

It showed. Early and often.

Man I wish some of you knew just how close it was.

I believe one day it might come out.

In my opinion, there was too much smoke for there to not be something going on.

My suspicion is that that there were some conversations, but Hart balked about the control over football he would have to give up.

How far things got before that realization, I have no idea. It could have just been an exploratory phone call that took on a life of its own.

No I get it. Didn't take it in a snide way.

I was one of those screaming for Butch to be fired after Vandy.

I have changed my tune.

Taken time to calm down.

He is still responsible for the the disappointment of this season.

Ultimately why I cling to this article so much is I whole heartedly believe the downfall of this season was Butchs poor decision to change the S&C program.

I feel like for a control freak he actually lost control and allowed the inmates to run the asylum.

He has the chance to fix this and given some of the conversations that I have heard he has had and the changes he might be making I am hoping he fixes this.

I think he can do it I just don't know if he will.

He needs to allow others to do their job.

My biggest fear is that Butch has reached his ceiling. But maybe with the right staff tweaks he can overachieve.

100% agreement as many of my posts can attest.

Dispelling the assumptions and fantasy on here are difficult tasks. Thanks for your efforts. Thin skinned and micro manager are understatements for Butch when he is stressed. But he can be very fun and a great guy, which makes him more productive. That's the Butch that needs to be around more in every part of his role. That other guy gets in his own way and causes more trouble than he can solve. He's not paid to be the smartest guy in the room or smartest coach technically on the staff. That was the game Dools tried poorly to play. He is paid to hire the guys that are, recruit the players that can deliver the W's, and be the face of the program.

I have said for some time now he gets 6 years if he treads water where he is now. Without serious staff and S&C changes it could be 5 years. You and I are in the same range on # of wins if that's how it goes. With the changes and giving up control to his coordinators, 6 or longer with increasing win totals that lead to a SEC title.

He needs to have a heart to heart with himself. He needs David to do what David does. Butch needs to listen and do what he recommends. I just don't know if he will.

With a true freshman QB that didn't start until a few game into season. I really don't understand the concept from some that think offense fell off. Defense fell off not offense. Offense was plenty explosive this past year and the year before with Adams at QB. It was on fire with Mariota. I'm not suprised at this fanbase always someone that Has to be negative. If we hired Peyton some jack wagon would bring up he can't beat Florida

Agreed. His offense kept on rolling despite decline in talent and a young freshman QB. The year before that his offense did well with a grad transfer. The only knock I have on Helfrich is he isn't a heavy recruiter. Even then I think he would do just fine here.

Bingo, media is notoriously bad at this. They are never happy, report every rumor regardless of what it is, do their best to bring down the football program then complain when butch is short with them....they are a bunch of clowns

Hold up, the players let this happen? Read that first sentence over.

That isn't him being a coward.

The sources didn't want to burn their bridges or have this fan base rip them to shreds for just speaking the truth.

They wanted this information out there so that the issues would be fixed.

Do you think that the WSJ or NYT always name their sources. YOu have to protect them sometimes.

Remember Watergate?

Wes? That you?

You've played football, right?

The players never want to do the workouts but the coaches make them.

They run them. They push them. They make them bleed, puke, and cry.

They never let them make this kind of impact. Or influence staff changes.

I was on a semi pro team once where this happened. The players had the OC run off and afterward the entire team was in shambles.
