While it's true Kelly called the plays but do you really think Oregon paid him to just have a title?

He was a coordinator in Colorado prior to Oregon. He has been known as a QB guru. Debord still on staff with Helfrich working with QBs... yes please

Apparently people think chip Kelly been calling in plays from his cell phone the past few years. Nobody should have any question on if the guy can coach offense. It's laughable to suggest he can't

Article didn't bother me. We are Tennessee and things have to change. That's not a secret. Butch has a year to prove it and I hope like hell he makes everyone eat their words.

This is how I feel. I have my doubts about whether he will make everyone eat their words, but I'm pulling for him to. I think it's in the best interest of the program if he did.

I worked with Travis briefly at the Beacon. He was a professional back then, and I assume he is now. I'm not sure if I will read the piece, but my instinct if so will be that it is good faith journalism.

I know a lot of people who worked on that beat with him and who still work at UT today.

Good folks all around.

:hi:

I'm rooting for him hard. That won't change so long as he's Tennessee's coach, regardless of my criticisms.

In spite of my very real reservations, I'm still grateful for the work he's put in for this program that we all care so much about. I know it's not for lack of trying.

Unless Chip Kelly is coming with him, I'm not as excited about Helfrich. His Oregon teams dropped off because their O wasn't NEARLY as dynamic.

I kind of agree with you here.

I know his offenses were dynamic when he was the OC, but how much of that was on the HC?

You would know if anyone.

How are things your way?

Things are really good. Thanks for asking.

And you?

I know that article was harsh, but it is going to get better.

All signs points to Blackburn as AD and a new S&C program.

Those two things will change the fate of our beloved Vols.

A strong AD wouldn't have prevented this article. They don't control the media.

They would have, however, taken an active role to make this article a bit more balanced.

This current admin looked at this article and did nothing to help their own cause. That's on them.

The fact of the matter is the article has as lot of truth in it and if you can't handle that as a fan base then that is what it is.

I think most fans could admit they have seen some of the things mentioned in the article play out. It almost seemed as though he wanted to pull punches to make up for the athletic department's lack of handle here, he ultimately wrote what he was told though. Didn't come off as a hit piece to me.

I think Butch lacks strong voices around him to even him out. He needs some help in this respect because his message is going off track and he doesn't really seem to understand why when it is so obvious to everyone else.

Unnamed sources especially with NYT and WSJ is stenography, not reporting.

Edit: Maybe I misunderstood the comment. Are you suggesting calling Rucker .... nevermind. Easy pickings.

SBV..why are you defending this so much? It's an obvious hit piece. Any objective article on the reasons for this years problems would have noted the decimation to the roster caused by injury. That is documented fact instead of some cowards opinion that wants Butch fired no matter what. Matter of fact you're one of those yourself now aren't you? I'm vexed at Butch too, but he is our coach and I don't see how anybody that is a true Vol, would even want that crap out there. Are guys in the "fire butch no matter what" camp realm willing to nuke the program to get what they want?

I apologize SBV. That sounded a lot meaner and snide than I meant for it to. But I can't edit from this phone so it is what it is.

On a somewhat unrelated note, LSU to pay Aranda 1.9 million. I guess we helped break the million dollar coordinator barrier with Monte, but the 2 million barrier might be broken this year.

It seems like maybe SBV is not reading the article as merely an unbiased Vol fan. It is probably easier to defend it if you have some sort of connection to the author.

Personally, after reading it I'm embarrassed as an alum for UT's JEM program.

There is a lot of truth in it. There's is also some that is flat out wrong (captains) or pure conjecture that no one could prove. The headline itself was National Enquire-esque.

Travis may be a great guy, but this was not his finest work.

Edit: the headline really pisses me off because of the 5 and 4 star we picked up. This is electronic media, it's not like it already went to print. He could have massaged this to be more balanced of he wanted to.

Glad to hear it.

We re getting by.

I've been hearing a lot of what he wrote from a couple different people. Some of which was uttered a while back.

Blackburn is the right fit.

I don't doubt there is truth in the article. Even the casual fan should recognize that CBJ has much to address in order to positively move forward from this season.

But, in regards to the long-term health of Tennessee football, I suspect that there's much more that needs to be addressed throughout the organization than is covered in the article. I just hope the offseason evaluations cover all areas that effect athletics, from school administration and BoT to those that have substantial influence on the program or how it is portrayed.

Politics and egos on all levels have to be set aside (or handled). If the review is truly thorough, some of those that are quick to criticize may not be pleased to hear an honest appraisal of their impact/performance. However, if they truly want to build/support a program that competes for championships, they will hopefully embrace a global need for improvement.

If you can't get enough people to go on the record and agree to be named or identified in your story, you keep digging until you find some who will or you drop the story altogether. Because using a bunch of unnamed sources isn't reporting, it's gossip.

Just now catching up on the thread, but THIS. What a crap story and such lazy reporting. Never take a story seriously that repeatedly quotes "source".

Sooo...in essence the whole School admin, athletic department and boosters/donors needs to have a come to Jesus meeting?

I read it. Like any piece, there were a couple of flaws- I think more attention could have been paid to sorting out the "source" reporting- but overall, I didn't see anything that screamed unfair. In fact, Haney did acknowledge the positive viewpoint with Hoods quotes. Nowadays, the definition of balanced article is seeking the opposing view by email thirty minutes before deadline.

If Wes Rucker was a source- and no one here knows that- that would be irresponsible.

Also, do yourself a favor and never attribute a headline to the reporter. I would suspect the noise here would be subdued without such an inflammatory headline- which was written by someone else.

I suspect that if you are determined to be uber positive about the program, you will think it's a hit piece. Otherwise I would say that it's an unflattering yet essentially fair piece, if those quotes are what he indeed captured.
