Is Helfrich @ OC a legit discussion?

He only comes here if he believes JG is that good, period. He knows we have the remaining pieces offensively to succeed. Where else is he gonna go?

Have no clue where else he would go. Not saying he wouldn't or shouldn't come here. Just asking if there was some sort of connection.

I'd do whatever it takes to get Helfrich here as the OC/QB coach... Then, once we (probably) under perform horribly again next year, Butch would be fired, and then whoever the AD is should throw the bank at Chip Kelly.

I think Kelly might come here knowing that Helfrich would once again be his OC. And I honestly think that Guarantano can be the next Mariota in Chip Kelly's offense with Helfrich coaching him up. Cause Helfrich was Mariota's QB Coach for two years.

Plus we'd already have the personnel at WR to run a fast paced offense like that with Tyler Byrd, Latrell Williams, Marquez Callaway, etc.

Man that would be a fun offense to watch.

Perfect setup for Kelly to be Vols next coach unless Butch wins SEC next year which is not happening

I hate to have to preface my question this way because of all the negativity. So before anyone slams me I'm not being negative. Just asking a question.

Why would Helfrich come here? I think it would be awesome if he came here not only for his offensive mind but also his proven track record in developing QB's. But I can't find where he has ever been east of the Mississippi haha.

Is there a tie to CBJ or something else I'm missing?

I sure hope he does make Neyland his next office though!

I'll hang up and listen to your answers.....

I can't see the geography making a huge difference. If your employer is paying the moving expenses, there's no difference in moving 100 miles or 3,000 miles.

He's a "failed" head coach. He'll go wherever he feels he can best rebuild his reputation and develop the skills he thinks he needs to succeed if/when he gets another shot as a HC.

I imagine there's at least a few programs looking to offer him a job. He said on the radio last week that he was also considering the NFL.

Not only is Kelly not coming here, you don't want him. He doesn't like to recruit.

If he comes back to College, he will get 6-8 million per year.... That will ease his dislike of the recruiting trail.

The more and more I learn about Helfrich, the more I like the idea of this hire.

Boise State

"At Boise State Helfrich coached Broncos quarterback Bart Hendricks. Under Helfrich's development, Hendricks won Big West Conference Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000 and guided the Broncos to the fourth best passing offense in the nation in 2000."

Arizona State

"Under the coaching of Helfrich, Andrew Walter broke nearly every Arizona State passing record and John Elway's Pac-10 touchdown record."

"Dirk Koetter would later praise Helfrich for his coaching abilities, 'He can do it all in his head. He doesn't have to draw the pictures on the board (…) not many people can do that. He sees the game through the quarterback's eyes. We all have ideas, but if your quarterback can't execute those ideas, they are lines on a paper. Mark is as smart a football guy as I know.'"

Colorado

Helfrich went to Colorado as the youngest OC in college football. He made significant strides, and even refused to leave to Oregon after only being at Colorado for one year. He helped breath new life into Colorado's offense and they hit offensive marks they hadn't in years.

Oregon

"During Helfrich's four seasons as Oregon's offensive coordinator the offense produced tremendous success, ranked highly nationally in several offensive categories and became well known for their extremely fast-paced offense built around speed."

"Kelly spoke highly of his protégé, 'He's really, really smart and has great people skills. Sometimes, smart people can't get their point across, but he's a great communicator. When I hire people, I want to hire very, very smart people. I wanted somebody who came from a different system. I didn't want a yes-man. I wanted someone who would bring new ideas to our system.'"

"With Helfrich coordinating under the philosophy of innovative spread offense guru Chip Kelly, the Ducks played in four straight BCS bowls from 2009 to 2012, won three straight Pac-12 Conference championships, and continuously energized college football with one of the nation's best offenses in scoring, rushing, and total offense in each of those four seasons. As offensive coordinator during the Kelly era, the offense averaged 44.7 points per game with an average of 283.4 rushing yards and an average of 500.7 yards of total offense. In 2012 Oregon's offense was hailed as its best ever as they averaged 49.6 points per game with an average of 537.4 yards of total offense with 315.2 of those yards per game from rushing."

"As quarterbacks coach, Helfrich was instrumental in the development of the quarterbacks that played under his tutelage at Oregon. In 2009, Jeremiah Masoli's leadership improved as he led Oregon to the 2010 Rose Bowl. The following season sophomore Darron Thomas guided an undefeated Oregon team to the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. Thomas finished his career 23-3 as a starter with a school-record 66 touchdown passes and led the Ducks to a 45–38 victory over #10 Wisconsin in the 2012 Rose Bowl. The 2012 season showcased Marcus Mariota as the first freshman to start a season opener for the Ducks in 22 seasons."

"Helfrich was recognized for his impact on the Ducks' offensive success as he was named by FootballScoop as its National Quarterbacks Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2012, in addition to being one of three finalists as its national offensive coordinator of the year honor."

Helfrich also helped mold Mariota from a freshman QB into the first Heisman winner in Oregon football history.

My Opinion

This guy seems like a perfect fit for our offense and JG. I think he could take our offense to the next level. His development of QBs has been shown at every coaching stop he has made. His QBs are efficient, winners, and break records. His offenses are electric, explosive, rack up tons of yards, and score points.

He already makes 6.

In Clay Travis' opinion this morning, he thinks Kelly gets fired next year and his NFL career is over. He doesn't think another team gives him a shot at HC and he wouldn't take a lesser position for less money.

Obviously this was just his opinion. I recapped his show this morning in the "Gruden " thread. It was interesting.

Not only is Kelly not coming here, you don't want him. He doesn't like to recruit.

About this.

Clay spoke about that and then Colin Cowherd mentioned the same thing. Fwiw.

Both said, "Chip doesn't like to recruit, people say that about him all of the time, but he does it and he's good at it, maybe not great, but good. Everyone dislikes something about thier job, but they still do it."

If Helfrich comes anywhere to the East side, then he's desperate. The guy is a born raised west coast man.

He's either NFL or going to a west coast school

He interviewed somewhere East today and not in Knoxville.

I think you're right about most candidates, but a guy like Helfrich is a perfect candidate to hitch his wagon to a potential lame duck coach.

He was just fired, and his stock, especially as a head coach has never been lower. What better way to rehab your reputation than to come into a program that needs to be fixed? If he succeeds, he likely has better options in 2018 whether Butch survives or not.

This pairing, if it happened, is a rehab project, both for Butch Jones and Tennessee as well as Helfrich. Helfrich may even be a HC candidate if CBJ were fired or left after next season.

This one actually makes sense without respect to Helfrich's geographic history.

I agree. He may do the Kiffin thing. His stock is low as a HC so he won't get any large offers but he could get a job as an OC at a respectable program. 2-3 years of a successful offense and he'll get offers once again.

Just worried with our current issues (i.e. in process of hiring chancellor and AD) we will miss out on hiring him. But fingers crossed because he gives us a to really make monumental leaps!

We will miss out on this hire. Saban will hire him to run the Bama offense and they will continue to dominate.

Saban does not want to run spread offense, plus Butch and Helfrich know each other. Did cross my mind though.
