He went with this regarding injuries.I don't recall him specifically stating what the reason was. It could have been one of many things or combination of things:
- Bad play calling; they were out of position all game long and looked at times like they had no idea what they were doing.
- Lack of adjustments; it wasn't working in the first half and there were no obvious adjustments in the second half
- Lack of execution by the players; either players just not executing the play or not understanding the play
- Team not being prepared for the Vandy offense
- Type of players playing not able to execute well the schemes that were being called.
These fall into many different areas with very different solutions required.
You are automatically assuming he is pointing towards the coaching. I am not making assumptions either way because he was not specific in what the reason was. He may have thought that he did not play well enough in the game for all I know.
The Vols defensive front is down to two scholarship seniors, and on Saturday night it started its 11th different combination in the secondary, eighth different linebacker corps and seventh different defensive line.
Barnett, however, refused to make any excuses.
We cant blame it on injuries, Barnett said. We didnt play well enough.
We didnt get enough pressure up front, Barnett said. We didnt make enough plays.
We werent executing, people werent in their gaps, Barnett said.
I think one of the biggest weaknesses in this article (besides the whole anonymously blasting Butch for not "owning it" C'mon!) is how little he seemed to think the crazy number of injuries hurt this team. I think it does fall back to the S&C program but he seemed to belittle the whole idea that injuries hurt us. Our "NFL Talent at every level of the defense" wasn't out there most of the season. I really take this article with a grain of salt. I think Butch has some stuff to do and if he doesn't, he's out. Articles like this don't really give us anything we didn't know beforehand and just look bad on everyone from the writer to the athletic dept.
Just calling it like it looks to an outsider who quite frankly has watched the media long enough to know they have agendas and are very rarely objective with what they report.
I'm not naive enough to believe reporters just report facts.
After 4 years of Butch if we don't have more than 1 good player at each position thats on butch. If the S&C is weak thats on butch. Injuries didn't stop Florida from going to LSU and winning. Stop with the excuses. 4 years later and 4 years of excuses.
Good post. The article gives some "inside" viewlpoints on issues that have ranged from suspected to downright obvious to anyone who knows much about CFB and is paying close attention. While it's prudent to take what anonymous "inside" sources reportedly said with a grain of salt, for the most part the article's main points don't seem to be off the mark. Butch has talked about examining everything in the program for needed improvement. He must include himself earnestly in that. Hey Butch, it's ok to make mistakes and learn from them, especially if you openly "own it." There is a new AD coming soon, a locker room, and huge, hungry fanbase that'll rally behind you if you that.agreed. i think in merit, the article is a reflection of a lot of the frustration many, self included, have felt about how this season ended, and what some of the causes of it were.
i'm not ready to say it's totally factual, but i do think it's accurate as to the sentiment.
if there's one positive take away, it's the idea of Blackburn working on Jones and giving him the opportunity to turn it around. while i'm not willing to say that i think CBJ will, i don't have an issue with the narrative the article portrays regarding that potential relationship. that could be exactly what he needs. and not that this has anything to do with the w/l columns, i do think there's a lot of merit to the lack of relationship he has with fans and media. he just doesn't do himself any favors with what he says as far as what are the cornerstones of his philosophy and culture, and what he says and does elsewhere. the "own it" comment in the article is accurate. i've been very vocal here on my sentiments regarding Butch and his seemingly inability to communicate effectively....he comes off as fake....well intentioned as he may be, he missed the mark too many times in this respect.
additionally, i also agree with the notion that this team could get better by subtraction. i've always had this feeling that the two classes he signed in 14 and 15 just had too much hype....and that there was probably some entitlement issues for some of those guys, with notable exceptions of Dobbs, Kamara, Barnett....
lastly, i think the article hit the nail on the head in regards to the S&C situation, and further, going back to the relationship with Blackburn, getting CBJ to understand his role, and the roles of his coaches, and how that should all fit together going forward, if things are going to change for the better.
i really want CBJ to succeed. that would be the best case scenario for this program. but he has to understand that that has more to do with him, his philosophy, and management practices, than it does with "the pitch".
the table is set, i don't think all is lost. but it is up to him as to what happens next.
Players must OWN it as well. Coaching a player is a two way street. Coach has to give and player has to receive and act upon what was given. If one side does not hold up their part - failure happens. Only the coach and the player knows which failed.
Coaching is like teaching - a teacher can have 10 students in a class and 5 of those students knock it out of the park - get A's, score high on the ACT's .... and the others are either average or fail. Does that make the teacher at fault because 5 students did not study nor take things seriously enough and were content with just getting by? Granted there may be some of the 5 that don't have the capacity to learn what was being taught - but a teacher can only see that and make suggestions for said student to address that - they can't fix it unless the dumb down the content to the level of the lowest performer.
Same is true of any manager / team member relationship. You manage the folks but at the end of the day they have to take accountability to use the advice given and perform. Only the manager / team member knows who truly failed when failures occur.
Timing is everything. Those in the media know that. Attention was clearly on Tennessee yesterday with the announcement. Wait a week with no games and no big recruits confirming and the focus goes away and this story probably doesn't get the national attention that it could get by putting it out there when eyes are turned this way.
The intent with this is to ensure failure not to support fixing any problems that may or may not be within the program.
