Butch's system

What do we average?

Between .5 and 1 passes to the middle of the field per game?

Jones biggest problem is his GAME MANAGEMENT. Not the system or anything else. It's his dumb decision making in crucial moments of a game. No system or personnel can fix that. His problem is between the ears.

Only problem I ever have had with the system is the stubborn use of hurry up. There are times when it's really effective and I fully understand using it after a first down, but sometimes it's ok to slow down a little and protect the defense.

Are you saying that we should strategically control the pace of the game based on the situation? Blasphemy!

We have NFL talent all over the field and still struggle with efficiency and execution

I think as time will tell if you are right. However, when the NFL comes looking they are going to look "all over the field" and find very little NFL talent.

With the right coaching I could see at least 3-4 players on each side of the ball that could've been productive on Sunday's.

Jones is doing a good job of not getting the most out of the raw talent and physical abilities of some of our players.

This is part of what killed the D this year. Hurry up and 3&Out so many times.

This !!! The offense doesn't ALWAYS work because Dobbs cant hit intermediate passes consistently , 7-15 yards. He can run and he is not bad at the long ball. So the LBs stay in the box and stuff the run and D's take their chances against the long ball , which is low percentage. Butchs system counts on the defense respecting the intermediate pass. It keeps only 5 blockers . Since the LBs are staying in the box you have 6 or 7 defenders against 5 blockers. So now you cant run . Its hard to get YAC on short stuff because the box is packed. Its hard to get time to throw the long ball because your blockers are outnumbered by rushers.

So the offense either scores real fast ( Dobbs Run or deep ball ) It fails fast . OR it turns it over . Add in that we try to hurry

So the defense was on the field 930 snaps ...often tired and exhausted. This is one of the highest totals in the country. When defenses play two many snaps ...they statistically have more injuries. As the injuries mount , more reps on fewer guys ...the pace of injuries accelerates

Is this what Butch means when he talks about complementary football ?

All he had to do was keep enough blockers in and work the power running game and work the clock when the time was right. Keep the defense off the field and uninjured . Find ways to make the passing game productive. He started doing this after the Scar meltdown ...but it was too little to late . The damage was done

2 WRs
2 RBs 3 if you count Hurd at the start.
1 QB that will get a chance
1 TE that we under utliize like crazy.

2 DB
1 LB
1 DE
2 DTs

1 KR

I think it'll end being more but we're as talented as we've been since 01- 05

One thing that has surprised me is how bad this offense is at stretching defenses laterally with sweeps and stretch plays. They must telegraph the call because it didnt matter if it was Pig or Byrd, the defense snuffed it out quick.

Malone, Jennings, Byrd.
Wolf
Boulware, Weisman, Richmond, Hall all have NFL potential.
Kamara and Kelly

If Dobbs isn't a threat to keep the ball, We don't put the defense in conflict at all.

The way that we used Hurd was stupid too. He doesn't have the vision to be a zone runner, but he's a damn beast as a gap runner.

What he said.

Just to add: Butch's offense is basically designed to run a West Coast passing game out of a zone read scheme. Therefore, in addition to an accurate quarterback with a quick release, REPEAT "quick release" you need receivers that are near perfect route runners. In other words, Preston Williams was never going to fit in here.

Also, you need smart, mobile offensive linemen who are able to use a neutral blocking scheme in order to make defensive players take themselves out of the play. Drew Richmond is powerful and agile, but never had to read defenses in high school or spend a lot of time working on technique.

I'll be honest I hate our blocking scheme. At a school like Cincy, it probably made a lot of sense because they weren't going to out athlete a lot of teams.

It's a finesse system imo.. SEC is a line of scrimmage league. I just don't think it's ever really going to work here long term.

His system is built around having to out athlete people right now. That's about to stop.

He runs a really basic 2x2 and 3x1 set, and has some dumbass bastard for going no huddle fast pace. The really interesting part is that he kills that by subbing so much on offense giving the defense a chance to rotate guys in too.

Some dumbass bastard?....ugh... ok
