This !!! The offense doesn't ALWAYS work because Dobbs cant hit intermediate passes consistently , 7-15 yards. He can run and he is not bad at the long ball. So the LBs stay in the box and stuff the run and D's take their chances against the long ball , which is low percentage. Butchs system counts on the defense respecting the intermediate pass. It keeps only 5 blockers . Since the LBs are staying in the box you have 6 or 7 defenders against 5 blockers. So now you cant run . Its hard to get YAC on short stuff because the box is packed. Its hard to get time to throw the long ball because your blockers are outnumbered by rushers.
So the offense either scores real fast ( Dobbs Run or deep ball ) It fails fast . OR it turns it over . Add in that we try to hurry
So the defense was on the field 930 snaps ...often tired and exhausted. This is one of the highest totals in the country. When defenses play two many snaps ...they statistically have more injuries. As the injuries mount , more reps on fewer guys ...the pace of injuries accelerates
Is this what Butch means when he talks about complementary football ?
All he had to do was keep enough blockers in and work the power running game and work the clock when the time was right. Keep the defense off the field and uninjured . Find ways to make the passing game productive. He started doing this after the Scar meltdown ...but it was too little to late . The damage was done
