Is Helfrich @ OC a legit discussion?

I'm seeing a lot of stuff about Helfrich possibly being courted to Tennessee as an offensive coordinator. I think it would be a home run hire obviously, but is this at all possible? Butch would have to actually be a little more open with his staff if he were hired. Hopefully Butch can delegate a little more.

Another crony?

Would be a Home Run Hire.

Helfrich was fired because of defense and recruiting. Less responsibility and more time to focus on the offense and QB and he could be a great hire for our offense. That is also if Butch truly hands him over the reigns as well. If Butch stays micromanaging on either side of the ball he will be gone next year. He needs to take a page from Dabo Sweenys playbook and just ride on the coat tails of his coordinators while being the face of the program and lead recruiter.

I do believe he could turn out like Dabo if he truly was willing to change. He's proven to be a heck of a recruiter and disciplinarian in his time here. He just needs to focus on things like that and let the OC and DC do their thing!

If they do, it's because they see an opportunity to be the interim and take his job next year when he's fired after 5 games. Only reason I could see Helfrich here.

I thought he hired Shoop for that in 2016. Get this guy and we will have better choices.

I hope Butch pulls it off, he has worked hard to get us better(a lot of work left). It's nice of him to bring in some guys that have some head coach experience, that maybe his sales pitch to his cronies"Somebody will be interim once I get fired or go to the NFL.", looks like he knows what he is doing.

He knows he is on thin ice, with a hot seat.

Get it together Butch!

Go Vols!

PS. Has it been settled that he is gonna be HC for the 2017 season?

Yep. Helfrich couldn't recruit a QB and made an awful defensive hire. He wouldn't have to do any of that an an OC. I think he'd do a great job developing a QB and calling plays.

The problem is that Butch is a micromanager who only hires yes men to work under him on the offensive side of the ball. Someone like Helfrich would come in with lots of ideas and things he wanted to do and I don't think Butch would like that.

I think you're right about most candidates, but a guy like Helfrich is a perfect candidate to hitch his wagon to a potential lame duck coach.

He was just fired, and his stock, especially as a head coach has never been lower. What better way to rehab your reputation than to come into a program that needs to be fixed? If he succeeds, he likely has better options in 2018 whether Butch survives or not.

This pairing, if it happened, is a rehab project, both for Butch Jones and Tennessee as well as Helfrich. Helfrich may even be a HC candidate if CBJ were fired or left after next season.

This one actually makes sense without respect to Helfrich's geographic history.
My previous post aside, I don't completely disagree with you. Obviously Helfrich would be a huge upgrade and solid hire. If he comes in to rehab his image, and with the possibility of a HC opportunity on the line it could definitely work. That is if Butch is willing, or forced, to completely step back from the offense. It could turn out to be best for Butch if his pride will allow it.

Outside of that, nobody is hitching their wagon to Butch's sinking ship for a year.

Exactly. He has his weaknesses (ingame coaching, etc) but if he would just give up control and was willing to change he could mask some of those weaknesses. Is he a top head coach in the country? Absolutely not. But neither is Dabo Sweeny and he went to the National championship last year and has another good shot to get back there this year.

Agree. Everyone loves to talk about Chip Kelly with Mariota, but Helfrich was just as responsible. He is the one that developed Mariota and recruited him. If JG turns out to be as good as people have made him out to be, it would be the perfect coach for JG imo.

CBJ should at least all the regulars that are out of coaching or already have a good job and just "Double check" make them say "no".

I think it would be a good thing to get a VFL in the Co- OC position.

Get it together Butch! You're on thin ice.

If this happens I would totally change my opinion on butch. Not only would it be a huge upgrade and probably does land the best OC option in the country but it also signals that Butch is willing to give a little on his offensive philosophy. There's no way a guy like Helfrich would come without a lot of control of the offensive philosophy.

All of that said I think we'll probably promote from within. Butch with great coordinators would be hard to handle for everyone but Bama. He's a great recruiter, runs a clean program, and he's a good ambassador for the university. I really wish he could overcome his own ego.

He's on Russillo and Kanell now and was asked what his next step is and he said that he's had conversations with several programs as either a HC or an assistant and he also had some talks with some NFL teams.

There is no winning with some people in this fanbase

Remember Fulmer was worthless except for great assistants.

Remember him "backing into" the East title?

Remember without Peyton he was avg?

Remember how all the other SEC coaches were weak at that time?

Remember that lucky natty that took a pi penalty, crappy UF kicker, stumble fumble, and 3rd string QB, to have it just handed to him?

It doesn't matter what happens. Certain people live in a piss poor negative world and will fight tooth and nail to stay there.

not sure how strong. Helfrich may have a job elsewhere before we have an opening. No openings here expected before bowl game

This is the most confusing part.

If you've got a guy that's interested why not make the room now if it is an upgrade?

Whoever is sitting on thier hand is killing the program

Simple solution would be to announce that DeBord will be retiring after the bowl game so we could move forward with a new hire, but this is Lyle Allen we're talking about here. Even the most simple things are complex to him.

Butch needs to be on the phone with Helfrich/his agent right this second, but there's a 1000% chance that he is not.

If DeBord retires, I'm sure Butch is looking at somebody like P.J. Fleck's OC.

I don't think the issue here is getting Helfrich to Knoxville, it's Butch putting his ego aside and hiring someone who may just may have a better offensive mind than him. He talks about going fast all the time and under Chip Kelly and Helfrich, Oregon went really fast

Literally his only shot at making it in this league is to hire Helfrich or someone of his caliber, hand over control of the offense to them, and bring in some assistants familiar with Shoop's system. Martinez, Stripling, and even Thig have all seen enough time here and need to move on to somewhere else. Mahoney needs to go, we need a legitimate QB coach, and even though we've improved at WR, I could live without Azzani too. This staff is in need of a major overhaul, and Butch is either too dumb or arrogant to realize it. Maybe both.
