But Hart made sweeping changes and pissed some people off. You say that he could have just sat and done nothing and still built the reserves. But that's not what he did.

There are some things that Hart probably deserves criticism for, but I don't believe the financial changes are one of them. He made some tough decisions that financially helped the department.

I agree. But lauding him as a financial savior like some do is too far. He didn't suck and didn't mismanage the massive increase of funds he was gifted. Any middle manager in corporate America could have done just as well under the same circumstances. He doesn't deserve criticism for that, but doing what any average Joe could do with a business degree doesn't balance out his non financial shortcomings.

Like some said, this is very likely going one of two ways in 2017

1) Butch exceeds expectations and leaves for another less pressured job

2) Butch fails expectations and is fired

SDS is reporting that Debord is going to retire and that Blackburn is expected to be the next AD

I saw that article an hour ago. Decided not to post or say anything because I highly doubt they know anything concrete or close to it. Buuuut I wouldn't even be mad if they turn out to be right.

You criticize when he makes a bad decision, and you praise when he does well. Simple management begavior.

He made some tough decisions that not any corporate middle manager would have done. He wiped out the women's department, which had built tradition.

This started by me saying he stopped the hemmoraging of money from the hammy era.

You can talk about an increase of revenue but cost of business has went up as well. We have a football coach making $4m and he's like 9th in the SEC.

I wasn't painting Hart as a genius. Just giving him credit for stopping the wasting of money that went on during the Hambone era.

I was talking about the financial side. He was decent as an AD, made some good and bad decisions. Lots of people seem to say "but at least he fixed our financial woes," which is what I was countering. He was butch jones for me, got us to a good place but probably has a lower ceiling than we all want.

Your post was one of the many I chose. Maybe I should have picked a better one as an example. He gets credit for stopping the waste of money, but that's a tiny tiny amount of credit, since just about anyone could have fixed that.

Merging the women's department was a financial decision. There was some fat that he cut. I am not real confident in his hiring skills, but it is better than Hamilton. But he deserves credit for the financial improvement.

Yes, I think there's no doubt he's a lame duck coach whether his ticket out of town is a pink slip or a job offer.

Right now we need to rally behind Butch to have a great "farewell season" at Tennessee. Let him stock the cupboard a bit more with recruits, go win 8-10 games in 2017, and then let another team take him off our hands. Use the buyout money (whether it's paid in full or negotiated down) to go get a proven coach.

Oh, and use the advance warning that he's either getting fired or leaving on his own in roughly 365 days and start putting out feelers to other coaches ASAP. No risk in pissing off Butch knowing that he's likely to leave anyway.

Of course, the Tennessee thing would be for Butch to have a monster season with JG at QB, win 11-12 games, and then they both leave for UCLA or something together.

Was Fort referring to the investment of making football great again at UT? Is there a great disconnect between boosters and the admin? Because if any shred of grudenmania is true, there were some people who cared about UT football and Hart stopped them in their tracks. Where are these boosters now??? Are they making their feelings known to administration? Does DiPitreo hate football or something? Surely he knows a healthy football program that WINS at a high level brings health to the entire body of the university.

Depends on who places Debord. Does a great up and coming OC even want to come here? I'd almost bet money that he promotes Azzani

Yeah, this is what I picture. We may never know, but if it was true, and anyone stopped Gruden from coming here, it was likely Hart.

Did Fort really say that football is no longer a priority at UT? My god our worst nightmares have come true. How can the boosters just idly stand by and accept this?!!!! This chancellor is going to bring us down even more I'm afraid. They just want Tennessee to be a great academic institution for research and if we win a game or two fine. Makes me sick and all the fans deserve better!!!!

I have been a Tennessee football fan for as long as I can remember. And I am also a student at The University of Tennessee. That being said, I don't think it is fair for anyone to be criticized for placing the focus on academics. Do I want Tennessee football to be great? Absolutely I do. I want to know what it is like to have my favorite team be the best in the world. But if I can get a top-notch education (which is why people come to college in the first place) while competing for the SEC East title year-in and year-out, I will gladly take that. I'd love a national championship just as much as anyone else here, but a national championship is not worth it if the players that compete for it are the ones that "ain't come to play school."

Honestly my current state of mind is no matter what happens we aren't geting a proven anybody at any assistant or coordinator position. Butch will be gone after next season. That's what I believe will happen and reading myself for. I'm ready to be proven wrong.

Not such a simple task when it had been the status quo for a decade.

They brought him in to be the bad guy. His job is done and now it's time to move on to the next AD.

Get ready for the "UT ain't no akadeemik skool and ne'er will bee" type of posts. But I agree with you. Push for greatness in both. The football team wouldn't be here if it weren't for the university having an academic side.

Hart has taken better care of the money than his predecessor.

I don't think he is a genius. I'm making the point that the reserve is low because the UTAD became a mess in the Hamilton era. Hart got us heading in the right direction.

I don't see how anyone can argue differently.

From what I understand, Hart pissed off a lot of boosters. Wanted their money but kept them at a distance. Didn't go over well with some of them. One reason he is no longer the AD here.

I don't care about their motivation. It's like saying, "Aww, well at least you tried?" Make the right hire. That may sound extremely insensitive, but as a fan I'm tired of watching crap go on and on with this university. Who cares who it is if they are the perfect fit for the job and will do well? It doesn't have to be the biggest splash hire in a millenia. Just make the darn right hire lol. IMO, with my untrained eye, it's Blackburn.

PS: I did not mean for that post to sound rude towards you. Just having a good fan to fan talk over this debacle. :hi:

I understand. I am as frustrated as you are. I am a huge Blackburn proponent. I think him not being hired by now means that they want to take their time and make sure they do this right. That doesn't mean that I don't think they'll screw it up.

SIAP Mandell has us in the music city bowl vs Minnesota.
