In games that Hurd did not play, this offense went off.

With Hurd:

App St - 319 yards
Va Tech - 330 yards
Ohio - 404 yards
Florida - 498 yards
Georgia - 357 yards
Alabama - 163 yards
S Car - 297 yards

AVG - 338 yards

Without Hurd:

A&M - 684 yards
TTU - 471 yards
UK - 599 yards
Mizzou - 609 yards
Vandy - 516 yards

AVG - 576 yards (602 against FBS opponents)

I'll offer another takes on this. If Hurd was the sole reason the offense had serious issues the first half of the season then why did we consistently suck until we got deep in a hole then caught fire later in the game? It's not like Hurd got benched in the second halves of games.

What I saw is that Debord is capable of calling a dynamic offense that puts up a lot of yards and points, but he'll never open things up until he absolutely has to. IMO the coaches were overly conservative with Dobbs for whatever combination of reasons (fear of injury, scared of turnovers, etc) and wouldn't open up the playbook until after they got in a big hole. Even against TAMU which was without Hurd, out offense didn't do anything until went were down big.

Over the last few games when our offense really opened up, obviously the RBs have been more effective due to Hurd being gone, but the biggest difference is how Dobbs had been used. Suddenly there are all these creative designed runs, and he's spreading the ball all over the field. I think it's directly related to the loss of our DTs and the coaching staff knowing that the only way they were going to win was to outscore teams. Maybe that's more of a Butch problem than a Debord problem, but there are issues on the offensive side of the ball besides just Hurd.

TLDR version: IMO Hurd was a problem, but the bigger problem was the coaches being too risk averse with Dobbs until they got way down in games or knew out defense wasnt going to be able to stop anyone for the rest of the season.

If Byrd is as good at CB as advertised, he needed to be moved there already. He got maybe 20 targets at WR while our secondary got torched all year.

He is. If moved to where he is the most talented, VN will claim he is terrible when he gives up his first pass completion and TD. Just like they react about E-Man, who had a very improved, solid year.

Byrd was the best CB in the Army AA game last year. He was glue on all of the receivers he faced in both drills and the game. Most analysts had him at or near the top of that class of CB's and said he was the steal of UT's recruiting class. He can physically hang with stronger receivers and has the speed/quickness to handle the burners. He lacks height, but makes up for it with the quickness and jumping ability. Strong guy for his size.

So Butch moves him.

Kiffin probably helped his good buddy's cause by agreeing to take the LSU OC job if he isn't offered HC somewhere. It's a safe bet he'll get HC offers this year-- and if he doesn't like any of them, why not go to LSU for a year and collect a boatload of $$. Kiffin and Saban have run their course, and Sark's waiting to step in.

I'd take him

Hart wanted Jancek out. UT needed all potential problems gone facing a Title IX lawsuit.

And QD likely will transfer if he thinks he won't be the starter. We could be down to SJones and Zac Jancek as backups. And of course, JJ, who we seem to plug and play everywhere.

The Title IX angle definitely makes that more believable.

Bingo. In east TN vernacular: The brain trust ain't all that brainy. The TLDR version of that: That dawg don't hunt.

True. Jancek was blatant about it.

I agree on QD. Which explain the scramble (and it is a scramble) to find a decent QB recruit with some upside.

I like Dormady but I just don't think he's mobile enough. Dobbs ability to escape pressure in the pocket & break tackles is going to be huuuugely missed.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Sometimes he had Ainge/Bray disease and wanted to always back out of the pocket, when stepping up would have avoided the rush and bought more time to find the open receiver.

Yep. Several former players have said QD is a transfer risk. Not sure how all the uncertainty and staff changes will impact the QB battle, but we've had some big recruiting misses at that position. Still don't understand how we completely alienated Hunter Johnson and Trevor Lawrence.

JG is a huge recruiting win. Hunter Johnson is not a loss, unless you just like shiny stars, Trevor Lawrence though...whew. Losing out there is a bigtine screw up

As always Tennessee never strikes at the right TIME. Kiffin really wasn't ready in 2009 but he is now I think. I would take him in a heartbeat as HC. But now it will never happen because we will be so damn careful after this lawsuit to hire some nice guy with a squeaky clean record Dooley 2.0. And as usual, we will cling on to Butch for one more year and waste even more time with no AD in place.

Not that I would be opposed to it but where is all this Kiffin talk coming from? Kippy Brown asked about it today, John Brice commenting on it last night, 247 putting out an article about it, rucker tweeting about it, clay travis writing an article about it, etc. Just interesting and wondering where it is coming from

**Edit. Now Hyams tweeting about it

It's amazing how it's mirroring Dooley's last year from that standpoint.

I understand all the angst about our season but do some of you really believe it is on a level with Dooley? I'm truly asking, not trying to be argumentative.

If we had these results with Maybin, Sutton and the DT's being around the entire year, then I see the comparison. I know most of you are tired of hearing the injury excuse but have you honestly ever seen a team go through a season with this type of reduction without a fall off in production? GBO

Seven Things We Learned From College Football Week 13 | The Big Lead

Butch Jones Did Not Win At Life On Saturday

Tennessee was dead set for 9-3. That would have placed the Vols in the Top 15 and lined up a Sugar Bowl bid. A layer of fondant would have covered over a mostly crap season. It was not to be. Butch Jones had another “Butch Jones” game in him. Tennessee lost to Vandy.

The Vols blowing a double-digit third quarter lead against an inferior opponent was true to form. We even had a classic Jonesian math error. Tennessee trailed by 11 with 1:37 remaining. They needed a touchdown, a two-point conversion, a successful onside kick, and a field goal to tie.

Tennessee had the ball 4th and 4 from the 13-yard line. The decision there – to even the most blockheaded football mind – should be to kick the relatively easy field goal to bring the game within one score. Instead, Tennessee went for it, failed on a pass completed short of the 1st down marker, and lost.

Vols fans would have been excited to find out they would beat Florida and Georgia preseason, until being informed losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt would cost Tennessee the SEC East.

This is the kind of thing that's going to follow CBJ wherever he goes. The media taking shots isn't a Tennessee thing and UT fans aren't the cause of his issues.
