I see 7 wins next year on the schedule. What do y'all think

Hard to say. A lot of variables on our own team, and a lot of variables on our schedule.

The SEC East is in an interesting spot right now. There are no elite teams, but I don't think there are any real bottom-feeders either. Florida should backslide after losing so much on defense, and Smart has yet to prove that he can get all of his talent pointed in the same direction. UT is coming off of one of the weirdest years I've ever seen. SCar, UK, Vandy, Mizzou all showed reason for optimism, and while I don't think they'll be a threat to win the division next year, they could absolutely cause mayhem.

My point: if we step forward, there are potentially no elite opponents in the East and the only team that should be favored over us next year is Bama. We'd need a defensive renaissance, and we'd need a good year from the QB position... both could happen. But if neither of those things happen, then every game in the conference is scary and we could be in a hell of a fight just to make a bowl game.

The bowl thing is always a catch 22. If we win, we say we are superior. If we lose, we say it is because we don't care.

The only time I buy the don't care argument is when a team barely misses the playoff/bcs game. Bama/Utah was one where I could buy that.

What are the chances Malone goes pro? He's one of the best in the SEC this year

If we had won out, gone to the Sugar and finished 10-3, I think he'd have considered coming back and improving his draft stock, but now I think he'll take his chances and go. I wouldn't be surprised if others weigh their options, too.

Then we lose Malone, Kamara, JRM, Sutton, Barnett, Dobbs, Foreman, Croom, L. Lewis, Vereen, and Wiesman.

That's a huge drop off

I hate how the Shoop hire worked out. It's just typical Tennessee.

Felt like we got a massive upgrade at DC and stole a promising coordinator from a struggling James Franklin/PSU team. Then PSU goes on to win 10 games and have its best season in years while Shoop's defense gets utterly embarrassed week after week and makes Vandy look like Baylor on offense.

Seems like any time we think we are getting an upgrade or something good is about to happen, it blows up in our faces.

IMO Unless JG turns out to be a lights out game changer QB, we will be a middle of the pack SEC east team.

I think its an either/or scenario. Based solely on history, QD will start the season. He may very well be excellent and lead us to a division title, so I'm not saying that's a bad thing. If JG is starting games next year, it will mean we have already dropped a couple and be on the outside looking in for the division.

JG will probably light it up in spring and fall camp, but make a few bad decisions every now and then. So Butch and DeBord will roll with the "veteran" Dormady, who has thrown a grand total of 24 passes, and completely refuse to change anything about the offense to suit his strengths.

He'll play exceedingly average through 8 games en route to a 4-4 record, get hurt on a blindside sack, and JG will be forced into action and look like an absolute stud.

I like Dormady but I just don't think he's mobile enough. Dobbs ability to escape pressure in the pocket & break tackles is going to be huuuugely missed.

First half of the season before all our DT were gone had some pretty impressive defensive performances, although usually only in the 2nd half. You must have a short memory to think he's worse than sunseri.

So he had a great defense, with great players, that he didn't recruit? I'm sorry he lost some great ones, I can't help that. I guess I do have a short memory, I'm only looking at Vanderbilt and what I'm seeing currently. And we gave up more yards than middle Tennessee to Vanderbilt. So if anyone wants to argue we have worse players on defense than middle Tennessee, be my guest.

Yep. It's a classic floor vs. ceiling argument, and given his MO, I fully expect Jones to pick the option that gives the higher floor as opposed to the higher ceiling- especially if Brice is correct and there will be an ultimatum for next year.

Sorry I missed it, what was the Brice ultimatum?

We had a damn good thing going with our former DC. It was huge risk that no one here wanted to acknowledge that cost us the east.

And JG has thrown a grand total of ZERO.

Let them compete and may the best man win.

Maybe in a vacuum, but it sounds like Janceks dismissal was for off the field matters, and it's tough to gauge from the outside the true impact his behavior may have had.

I'll crucify Jones for a lot of things, but not for swinging for the fences with Shoop.
