I see a lot of tepid, or defiant, support for Jones that runs along the lines of "Well, he did such a good job of taking over a dumpster fire". In reality, the Dooley years were so out of whack for what one expects and is able to accomplish as a UT coach that our equilibrium has been dramatically affected.

So, let me put it this way; if you are a moderately capable coach and put forth some amount of effort, then you can get players to come to Tennessee. We get players. We always have, no matter the coach, though some more than others. It's a great place to sell to recruits. The fact that Dooley was doing so poorly merely reflects the reality that he was as god awful a coach as has graced the Hill since Wade Houston and, most importantly, lazy as hell. He wasn't the norm.

Unfortunately, Dooley so wrecked our psyche that some feel as if it takes some kind of exceptional order of coach to keep us from seeing those depths again. What it actually takes is a coach who isn't so lazy as to not pick up a phone and call Vonn Bell.

What does this mean in regards to Butch? He isn't a miracle worker for getting a bunch of mid-state kids and legacies to play in front of 100,000 people and have access to a state of the art facilities and resources in an SEC school. This isn't going to fall apart without him.

Lets be honest, like the OP said Butch lucked out with a legacy class full of in state kids. His recruiting since has been mediocre at best, even Dooley had top 20 classes this place at least recruits itself to a top 20 class every year.

Les Miles would be a massive improvement. He can bring Chavis with. I personally think we can do better, but the idea that there is no upgrade available is silly.

The problem with Tennessee is the people at the top are bean counters. I'm not sure they care about anything other than how much money we rake in.. I didn't like the hire in the first place and not many were too thrilled with it. Now that we got exactly what we hired a mid major coach who is actually worse than Dooley at in game coaching it's almost back to square one again.. Problem is whoever is doing the hiring sucks at it..

He'd be a instant improvement.. The powers that be wouldn't do something so brave. They take the high road. Leave a guy in place til he runs the program in the dirt then they fire him, leaving a mess for the new guy to clean up. Just about every time..

Agree. This idea that Butch is a great recruiter is ridiculous. Just look at the O-line, LB's, and especially the DB's. And the 2017 class is meh

Place sells itself always has. It's definitely not all the great success we've had lately. It's not as hard to recruit here as some would think.. I don't think Jones has much left to sell.

Yep, and the stupid part is that spending a bit more money for a great coach and a winning team, a championship contending team, would bring in boatloads of money that would pay for a higher coach's salary many times over. All short sighted penny pinching nonsense with no vision whatsoever.

I think it's time to let Dooley RIP. There is a much bigger problem emerging.

Butchs so called accomplishments are only such because he ignoring the overall history of the program and focusing on the previous 7-8 years.

He has lauded bowl eligibility. UT is 7th in all time bowl appearances. And that is from a time when bowls were actually an accomplishment. No less than 11 SEC teams will bowl this year. Only one from the east will not. Bowl eligibility is a "C" grade.

Welcoming alum and former players is not an accomplishment. APR?
Only Dooley could make those things seem impressive.

No one will come here. Butch is our only salvation.

This is deluded. We still have talent & the best facilities in the nation. We just have to start paying elite coaches, instead of seeking out the Van Gogh hidden in the garage sale bin.

Like Beecher said, Butch is very lucky to have followed Dooley.

It sounds crazy but from the aspect of "improving" Dooley leaving it in a bad way was a blessing for Jones. If he followed a guy that could win 7 or 8 but nothing of note (basically) Jones level his perception would drastically be different.

As fans, we learned nothing from the Dooley years. As a whole, we were blindly loyal to another coach who wasn't getting it done.

I just don't get the financials of giving a guy that huge a buyout til such and such a date. Contracts should be performance driven. If you don't reach certain goal then buyout is reduced. Shouldn't be held hostage by every shat coach we hire. Someone sucks at negotiations..
