I have a problem.

I don't particularly enjoy the show anymore, but I can't stop watching it. I am still interested in the overall story and the characters, but it feels more like a chore to keep up with. 1st world problems, I know.

All I've got queued up right now is this and WestWorld. I suppose if my DVR was full or I had some Netflix/Amazon series on, this would be at the bottom of my watchlist.

I don't watch it live anymore or even on Sunday night; I now watch it the next day, usually on my laptop or my phone. I've found not caring about it nearly as much and skipping Talking Dead has made me in some ways enjoy it more than I did. Plus the phone app has far fewer commercials.

I still think it's better than the majority of shows, just not what I'd consider a great show.

snoozer of an episode... kept waiting for the shoe to drop on Gregory but that ever came... it was nice watching him get that right hook from Maggie for taking the watch.

All you gamers out there might recognize Simon from a certain game involving stealin' cars....

also, that whole portion you quoted wasn't so much me finding the show awful as it was just something that came across my mind during that scene. The scale (size and population) of Hilltop just seemed extremely small there, more so than usual/should probably be. that's all i was saying.

yet you for some reason try to tell me about some purpose this scene is supposed to serve? um ok. wasn't hard to get, considering the characters literally say that out loud. still doesn't really have anything to do with my post, but whatever. and trust me, I've already been well convinced Gregory is an inept leader, thanks.

I was a defender of the cliffhanger but I do think it pissed off a sizable chunk of the audience. They may not have quit watching altogether but could easily have switched to DVR/streamingamd that's not reflected in ratings. The commercials are hard to sit through for this show.

Plus... Westworld.

It was the Glenn death that did it, no reason to sugarcoat it. A good portion of the people watching this show loved the Glen/Maggie/Baby story line. It gave people a glimmer of hope in a hopeless apocalyptic world. Instead of playing it safe and keeping the ratings to your own show up Kirkman just had to cross that line, not only to prove a point but it conveniently stays in line with the comic book so why not do it? I'll give you 6 million reasons why not to do it. News flash, not everything that plays out in a comic book works well on screen.

Westworld has 2 episodes left. Just in time for the mid season finale of Walking Dead. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the ratings go back up a decent bit for that episode as well as the second half of the season.

Then again... those time shifters may have gotten used to skipping the commercials. Can't blame them.

Yeah, that's true. Ratings are the lowest since season 3 tho. Hopefully the downfall continues.

Good, this show would be so much better if they dropped the mass appeal schtick an unapologetically tell the story Kirkman wants to tell.

I understand not liking the show anymore. I don't understand wanting the ratings to fall.

Is this like hoping Tennessee loses to Vanderbilt in hopes that Butch Jones gets fired?

I can get it. I don't think it completely compares to hoping UT loses though because it's a different animal.

If you're a fan of the show but aren't happy with the results, you can hope the one thing that will get through to the writers and showrunners, the ratings, will compel them to improve.

Take the cliffhanger, it was an obvious ratings ploy. It initially worked but ultimately looks like it will backfire. I can see fans not wanting to reward them. The truth is if ratings are high, then any criticism is going to fall on deaf ears. If the ratings fall, it's the clearest message you can send that the audience isn't happy. That's how it works because ultimately critical reviews don't mean anything to shows like this, the almighty dollar does.

As far as the rating being in "freefall", that's an overstatement I believe. Yeah they've lost 6 million viewers since the premiere and they are the lowest since Season 3, but as you said, they are still the highest on cable television. You always have to factor in long running shows will lose viewers the longer they go, it's extremely rare for ratings to stay stable or even get higher.

Where it will become an issue is production costs. From what I've read each season's production costs raise significantly, especially with bringing in new actors and those actors being established guys like JDM. If the ratings drop to under 10 million per episode, then I think the AMC head guys will start to worry a bit.

Problem with that theory is once viewers leave they rarely come back even if the show picks back up.

Hoping for the ratings to tank is really like hoping it wraps up sooner as opposed to later.

How far has it really veered from the story Kirkman is telling in the comics so far? The only character that out lived their comic role by any significant amount of time is Carol.

I can't speak fully to this because I've only read a small fraction of the comics. But I suspect that the show has pulled a lot of punches from the source material to make it more mainstream

They storynis much darker in the comic. Maggie hangs herself in a tree for instance and is saved by Glenn. Instead of all the feel good stuff the show throws at viewers I prefer a darker/grittier line. There is no hope in this situation, there is no safe zone, just survival.
