Bob Shoop says Tennessee Vols' defensive struggles 'not acceptable'

Shoop had some real, honest responses. He took ownership and explained the corrective process moving forward. He even showed some fallibility by saying (basically) "We've had some injuries but that's no excuse for our poor play". That's what fans are looking for --- some measure of accountability and hope for the future.

And in the same article, you have Butch's standard bull**** vanilla coach speak. Seems the Jedi could learn from the Padawan (for all you Star Wars nerds out there)...

All Tennessee fans need to understand one thing. For those wanting to run Butch out of town because he didn't meet their expectations, just who do you think will look at this job? If Butch is not safe with his turn around of Tennessee football, no coach in his right mind will look at this job.

You don't fire coaches who have turned your program around just because you didn't think it was fast enough. Our team is better off today than it was four years ago and we'll get even better. We run off Butch and we're going backwards again.

Just like when Meyer replaced Zook & Florida went backwards..oh wait they won a national championship.

And I'm not saying I want him fired. But for 3-4 years we've been saying "wait for 2016..East champions and recruiting will skyrocket"

Yeah it's been the exact opposite

what coach is coming off an undefeated Fiesta Bowl winning team that wants to come here next year?

This job is a lot better than it was a few years ago. He has done s good job rebuilding the roster for the most part Still some holes at LB CB OL.

I just don't think he's the guy to win championships here.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes- most of the time- coaches hit their ceiling. If Butch were to move on after this year, I think you'd call his tenure a success. Sometimes the coach that pulls you out of the dregs isn't the same one that will lead you to a championship.

A bit of an oversimplification, but that was a factor in replacing Majors with Fulmer. Many other factors though.

I've said this before on here, but the realistic expectation cannot be a National Championship or even an SEC Championship every year. That can and should always be the goal, but so many things have to go your way in scheduling, recruiting, injuries, luck, etc. to make the CFP or win the SEC that it isn't realistic to set the expectation as a Natty or SEC Championship for any coach at Tennessee.

Since 1960, Tennessee has finished in the AP Top 4 only 6 times. It isn't reasonable to set that as the expectation for the head coach.

The baseline expectation, in my opinion, for whether the head coach should be retained or fired is whether we win the SEC East at least 1 out of every 3 seasons. One of UT, UF, and UGA should win the East every season. Therefore, we should win it at least once every three years. If our coach can't do that, he should be let go.

In my opinion, coming from where we were under Kiffin/Dooley and the rebuild that was required, I consider this season to be the first of three for Butch that he must at a minimum win the East to be retained for another three years. So this year we failed to meet that expectation. That means we must win the East either next year or the year after or I think he should be let go.

I think Butch will meet and/or exceed that expectation over the next two years, but if he cannot, I am confident we can find a coach that can.

I am not confident that we would ever find a coach that could meet the expectation of some of you on here, which appears to be that we must win the SEC and/or Natty every season.

This isn't fair. Zook took over a powerhouse and went backwards. Jones took over a dumpster fire and has kept going forward.

Not quite fair either. Florida's decline under Zook started under Spurrier. He knew what he was doing when he got out.

Urban Meyer doesn't win that first championship without Zooks recruiting.

it took fulmer 6 years

That's refreshing

@BryanDFischer: Bednarik Award finalists: Jonathan Allen (Alabama), Myles Garrett (Texas A&M), Jabrill Peppers (Michigan)

It's a joke that Garrett sniffed the finalist list. He has not had a great year.

We've got to be the only college town where both the media and the Po-Po have it out for us/don't like us (UT sports/football)....

But we are Champions in life, so we should be good to go............

When Bama fired Mike Shula, they were searching for their fourth coach in six years. They hired Nick Saban. When Shula was hired, Bama was a mess and Shula was brought in to bring stability to a troubled program. He did that. Saban was hired to take the program to the next level and win championships.

If CBJ and UT decide to part ways at some point, it's ridiculous to say that UT can't do exactly what Bama did-- go out and find a coach to take the program to the next level and win championships. Some people think CBJ could be that guy; others think he's not. Either way, UT is, and will continue to be, a desirable destination.

IMO Almost anywhere is a desirable position as long as it pays as well as Bama. They spared no expense and it shows.
