Lol butch said our players won the biggest championship, the championship of life. He makes it so hard to like him.

For all those whining about this quote, raise your hand if you want to go back to the Dooley years, so we can hear some great entertaining press conferences.

If Butch leaves us after this year, I can't wait to hear the freak out from some of the same posters who whine about Butch. If he were to leave, it won't be fun trying to replace him.

This is just my opinion but it seems it might be difficult to have an amiable relationship with our media. Don't know what one would expect him to say about Hurd leaving or the cleatgate?
As far as the winning the East statement, I took it as, he was referring to not talking about winning the East before the Mizzou game. What happened in Baton Rouge, he had no control over so no reason to talk about anything but winning the Mizzou game..

No question, the local media can be difficult, even hostile, but dealing with them is part of the HC's job. CBJ gets defensive, he condescends, he bristles and he tells them things they know aren't true. So a lot of them don't like him, don't trust him and are going to pounce on anything to portray him in a negative light. His frustration and the criticism might subside if he had a media coach to help him.

Butch and the Vols lost a game to South Carolina they shouldn't have lost. This is true, but....

Dabo and Clemson lost to Pitt
The great Harbaugh and Michigan lost to Iowa
The great Urbs and OSU lost to Penn state
Gus and Auburn lost to a bad UGA team
Kirby and UGA lost to vandy
Freeze and Ole Miss lost to vandy
Sumlin and A&M lost to Mississippi state
Fuente and VA Tech lost to Syracuse
Jimbo and FSU lost to UNC
Gundy and OK State lost to Central Michigan
The great Herman and Houston lost to Navy and SMU
The great Dantonio and Sparty has lost to everybody

It happens to literally every single coach. Without exception. It doesn't happen often to Saban but it happens.

But some fans want Butch gone or at least his seat to be flaming hot. And then in such a toxic environment, Butch's coachspeak gets blown out of proportion.

And y'all wonder why some big time coaches are wary of coming here.

For context Butch was asked about his emotions for senior day (from @rockytopinsider)

Excellent quote!! Ridiculous the hoopla this is drawing. Thanks, Butch, for all you have done and continue to do for our Vols! He probably has high blood pressure, because he wants to win so bad here, yet so many of you crap on him. Ridiculous! Your asinine if you don't think he and this team are extremely disappointed for not winning the East.

The answer is money, not because of comments made about a press conference on a message board.

Now Texas, with their megaboosters, that's a deterrent. What we are saying here doesn't mean a thing to any coach anywhere.

And going negative on twitter equals more attention and more followers and several of the local media members care more about their number of followers and being locally famous than actually doing their job well.

They'd rather post memes than write a thought provoking article.

That answer is completely fine.

Yes it is, but what isn't fine is everyone who can't wait for something to be misconstrued so they can hurry to a message board to attempt to make fun.

In the context that it was given it was a perfectly acceptable answer. I am giving this place a rest until after the Vandy game, seems every time I get on here, I get so frustrated that I do not enjoy Volnation anymore..

Everyone has money now. We could go and flash $6mil tomorrow and we wouldn't get our #1 pick.

That's how a program like Florida ends up with McElwain. He wasn't their first choice. Wasn't a hot name. Didn't command a lot of money. It's not easy to get the right coach.

Misguided fans think we could go out and hire someone better than Butch tomorrow if we'd just spend the money are mistaken. Every program has money now. Houston is paying their coach $3m to lose to Navy. Think about that.

You don't think the noise from the fanbase makes a difference? Maybe not a couple comments on a message board but the general feel and vibe from the fanbase?

Listen, i'm impatient too. But some fans are unreasonable. And won't even listen to other viewpoints , like maybe how it may be better for us to not go to Atlanta. Things like that.

Nope it's "we should won the east. Butch is terrible. We blew it in Columbia." The first and last of those are true, yeah, but that doesn't mean we won't be better off in the long run. Why don't we try to look at the positives?

Hey, any of you guys have any idea how I submit for my VolNation Message Board participation trophy?

I don't want Butch to leave, I simply want him to quit talking like a robot and show some real emotion, get rid of the dead wood coaches and bring in upgrades to help the kids develop and make the most of their talents, and quit being stubborn by making adjustments both before and during games depending on the opponent instead of "my way, or the highway".... Oh, and put in the best players suited for the particular offense and defensive scheme we are running instead of coddling upperclassmen.... that should about do it.

The hostile pool of Tennessee beat reporters is so overblown. Most of them are kids with their first or second jobs out of college trying to be impartial so it looks like they are good at their job, so they can get to a bigger market.

Either that, or it's someone like Hubbs or Rucker who is so ingrained with UT that they've got to be on their best behavior or lose access. These guys are harmless.

Adams is a provacateur, but that's what he's been paid to do for 25 years. He's made absolutely zero impact on the program.

I have been saying this for years. A lot of folks think this is Shangri-La of coaching destinations. It is not even close (and the reason is not negative message board posters).

Winning is the positive Tennessee needs; winning cures everything. Just win dammit.

Let's say we win out, including the sugar (or even citrus) and go 10-3, and finish around if not in the top 10

And let's say Florida loses their last three and goes 8-5, including losing to bama by 30, and finishes out of the top 25.

Which would y'all say was better?

Sam...It's about money dude. Come on now you know better. At the end of the day, it's the money that talks.

Man, great analysis. Of course, nowhere in this subtopic is anyone talking about replacing Butch. My point is that money, not a message board- and no volssam, to reply to your post in this one as well- nor the vibe from the fans is going to determine a whether a coach will be taking a multimillion dollar job. There are other factors at play, like how big a rebuild it may be, location; but the fanbase is not one of them.

You need to become more familiar with your own program, though. UT may have the 6 million, but the next time they spend that will be the first time (even adjusting for inflation).
