Game Thread Lady Vols at Penn State

While I agree that coaching is clearly at fault for not being able to break down a zone, etc, some of this is squarely on the players...not being able to hit a layup for example, and the total lack of toughness and desire from about half the team. We are still lacking an Anosike-type leader who holds people accountable.

I despise than guy up north just like all you folks does, but I can right off think of a few others that are nearly as good. This don't mean they would ever end up here. Schaefer at MState, Bruno at DePaul, Tara at Stanford, Muffett at ND. I am sure there are others and probably some great up and comers/.

But it is just one game. Please no one, commit suicide. :)

I back Holly, it was a tough loss, Russell and Nared showed up. Dat made I happy.

Welp, they have a week before there next game, hopefully we show improvements. How far do we drop in the rankings?

Alex,I gave you a "like" on this one! This talent is being "dumbed down" by a confused, clueless, weak head coach...and I don't dislike her as a person, but she just doesn't seem capable of getting the most out of her players, or capable of improving their basketball skills.

The fact that she went out and upgraded her staff from a recruiting standpoint and not a coaching standpoint shows where Holly thinks the problems lie.

My suggestion for Holly...you have the # 1 rated recruiting class coming in next year...don't try to coach them...just let them play and get the hell out of the way...they will make you look like a good coach if you let them coach themselves! If you tinker with their game, you'll just screw it up!

So, HOlly and the coaching staff go into practice every day saying oh, how can I make these players worse.

Get out of here! She has been letting them play, but when they don't come ready to play, whatchu do?

Rome wasn't built in a day...

With UT down 13 at halftime, Jaime Nared and Mercedes Russell came out hot in the second half.

The two combined for 29 of Tennessee's 36 points in the half. They also accounted for 12 of UT's 22 rebounds.

Both players ended up recording double-doubles. Russell had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Nared finished with 18 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end.

Happy Holidays.

By doing that.....she does!!!!!! Our guard play is atrocious!!! Our only good guard that's actually a new generation type of guard is sidelined with injury! We're finally getting the type of guards we need in order for our team to be successful!!!

Dat part. Davis, Ervina, work on you handles.

2-4 Davis
2-4 Westbrook
1-3 Annie
5 KK

Very nice.

Maybe so, but there's absolutely no reason to be losing to Penn State regardless who's playing guard. Alabama beat this team last year. Something tells me there's more to our problems than better guard play. Hopefully you're right and that will fix all our issues.

We need a lot of work. We play a decent team and we fold like a tent in a 200 MPH wind. We lack aggressiveness and we can't keep up with speed. We are still playing the same offense and can't resolve the zone. Russell is usually out of position and exhibits occasionally skillet hands. She also needs to be trained not to bring the ball down or it will be an easy steal for smaller players. We need to come up with a consistent zone buster. We have two players that were good 3 point shooters in high school and now they can barely hit their butts, with both hands. Something is missing. If we do not figure it out, we will once again fall out of the top 25. This could be a long season.

Holly was prioritizing. Having a successful recruiting class had to be in order after receiving 0 recruits and a season of futility only given it a sigh of relief reaching the elite 8.

She's like a cat with 9 lives. She gets the nr. 1 recruiting class on the same day that she losses to unranked PSU.

And she has some of her biggest boosters on the Summitt and Volnation keeping a positive spin on all things CHW. It's like their living in a bizarro world. :eek:k:

LOL...I'll stay as long as I damn well please...don't have my head stuck up the head coaches' ass...it's the coaching that doesn't have these players ready to play...and it's SO damn obvious...pull your nose out and smell reality!

People got misled by the hot start that Tennessee had against a bunch of cupcake midget teams. We should have known that this was a rebuilding year with the graduation of Graves and Moore, lack of impact recruits and injuries to Cooper and Carter. Hell, there were some people who were saying that Schaquilla Nunn would be an upgrade to Graves  Of course, you have the truly deluded who thought this team would go 3-1 vs. ND, Stanford, Baylor and Texas :hmm:

Next year is the year that they really have the chance to shine. Anything that happens this year is gravy. They were lightly regarded coming into the season...at least for a Tennessee team. At least the SEC is weak as hell this year, and they should be able to finish no lower than 3. If they do better, then it makes the tournament interesting...but I'm not going to fool myself into thinking they are anything more than a mid-tier Top 15-20 team unless they prove otherwise on the court against somewhat decent teams.

Going into the season, I was thinking this was a S16 team. and if they go further than that, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

And yes, Holly again proving that she can't coach...

A bad point guard kills your team. Did anyone catch the Miss State-Texas game? That little PG from MS completely controlled the tempo of the game. And if I recall correctly, she was a 3 star recruit that didn't have offers from the top programs.

Schafer clearly was able to get more from his lightly regarded recruits than Holly can get from her 5-star All Americans. That's not on the players; that's on her.

Doesn't matter it all comes down to coaching. We have two point guards J.R. and Alexa. Giving them the tools for success lays in the hands of the coach and her staff.

I can't understand for the life of me why Middleton continues to get the minutes she does. She is slow with the ball and second guesses herself way to much. If you play her then move her to the 2 on offense and let her look for open space to fire off the 3 pointers. She is a good shooter and that's it. Dunbar needs more minutes also. And someone needs to pull Nared aside along with Diamond and explain to them the value of slowing down just a bit with the ball. Make smarter decisions. This team almost has all the pieces to be really good.

It's not just the offense. It's the defense as well. It's a given that if there is a confident, aggressive guard on the opposing team, they will have a field day scoring. Not just on perimeter shots, but inside shots as well. No one is afraid of Russell.

Well, I'm glad her ass is wide enough for my head to fit. lol Is Holly a great coach? No, Can she be a great coach? Maybe. We shall soon find out.

Reality is, its a loss one game on the road. Reality is, the team is 3-1, Reality is, we still have a long season, Reality, is she has taken her teams to the Elite 8 3 of the last four years, Reality is, the season is young, Reality, if Jordan and Diamond, don't come ready to be stat stuffers every nite, we will struggle, Reality is, hopefully Diamond and Jordan realize they have to come ready to play every nite, Reality is, we just signed the #1 recruiting in the nation, and all of em are gym rats. :p

Reality is, we have another game vs VT in a week, a team we lost to last year.

Payback time ladies. Go Lady Vols.

The announcers at the UConn game mentioned that Dangerfield wanted to go to Tennessee but she opted for UConn because Tennessee already had a point guard and Jefferson was graduating from UConn.

Because Alexa can shoot the ball, and she is the best passing guard (other than Diamond). It becomes a trade off. She hurts the team defensively because she will easily get beaten off the dribble by most PGs. But on the flip side, they become a more difficult team to guard because she's been lighting it up from outside the perimeter. There is a lot more upside to having her on the court as opposed to someone like Jordan who is not much better of a defender and much less capable.

I don't think that this team has the pieces to be really good unless PG play improves. It's clear that Jordan is the same player she's been for 3 years, so I don't expect much to change unless Alexa becomes a better defender and starts taking Jordan's minutes.
