A lot of kids played very well tonight and was proud of the fight in them...
As I said earlier, tonight we truly saw just how bad our secondary has become- it has almost gotten worse as the year has progressed. There is some major work to be done actually coaching and teaching these kids how to tackle, take the right angles, and truly know how to play that position, and we do not currently have the staff in place to get the job done. Next season something has to change or we will get torched every game at will... this display was against a 3 win team... can you imagine what would have happened to us tonight against a pass happy, top 10 team? Ouch. Butch needs to break out of the bubble of denial he has been in this season with all his BS coach speak and stubborn attitude and make some changes so he can stay longer than where he is currently headed.... I will give Shoop next season to prove us wrong on whether he is just eye candy that doesn't get it done.

No, teams weren't converting 3rd and 21 with draw plays...

But they are now...because our D-Line is mostly getting pushed around. That isn't scheme, that's having 275 lb DTs. It's pretty obvious that injuries have severely hampered any chance we had of being a good defense. The good teams we played we played weren't doing this to us when we were healthy but the bad teams are now...so its pretty damn obvious what's going on here. Shoop is having to try and make chicken salad out of chicken ****.

No, whether or not we should have the depth to not be in this position is another matter.

This. If he actually believes that and doesn't have the SECE as his goal every year, he needs to leave now. There's just no way that's the case though, so he's just insulting everyone's intelligence.

Either way is not acceptable. He's paid over $4 M a year for the results he achieves. Own it. That's what his motto for the players is, "own it". Be straight with people and they will back you to the bitter end.

Yep - and his team still has a lot to play for this year and he knows it. He doesn't want them to pack it in.

I also think he's wary of the media backlash if he admits failure. But I think it's a lose-lose proposition. You say what he says and it sounds like's he's content with 8-4 or 9-3 seasons. You say you and your team failed and you're going to revisit everything and make big changes, then it sounds like you've lost the handle and are panicked / overreacting.

Disagree. You say that now the goal is to win the east every year, and it's disappointing any time you don't. Doesn't sound like any of the things you listed.

I agree with your take on the defense. I'd also add that confidence goes a long way and this defense has no confidence right now. You almost sense that they dread it when the other team lines up to run the football - they look like they know they will fail.

But it wasn't always this way. I really thought the defense was coming around after the first half of the VT game all the way up through the Florida game. We stuffed the run really well in that stretch. We had good stretches in the Georgia and Texas A&M game too, but then the team started wearing down.

Exactly. It wasn't happening earlier in the season. It's happening now. What has changed? Injuries. That is the only difference. I do think guys need to be taught to tackle better, make some staff changes, but it's not as tho Shoop went from being awesome to terrible

This learning curve for Butch seems to be quite steep.

This is a good point. Folks will back a coach who steps up and owns it but those comments tonight are "Busch league."

App state stuffed our run game with a smaller DL than what we're rolling out now. The injuries play a part, but that's not the only problem when you're giving up 700+ yards to a trash Missouri team.

I'm not speaking with any confidence or knowledge at this point but it would not surprise me one bit if Butch Jones is not the coach of the Vols next year. I just have a feeling.

I just hope we don't inexplicably extend him. I'd understand if we gave him a slight raise, but we don't need to tack on years to his contract (and thus money to his buyout). Would be making our next AD basically stuck with Butch regardless of performance for the next 2-3 years.

He doesn't like any negativity. He wants to serve chicken sh!t and tell everyone it's chicken salad. He gets mad when people question him on it. If his aspirations are to get to the NFL, he won't make it through one press conference.
That aspect of his personality would fit perfectly in the NFL. Most coaches in the league are like that. Fisher used to drive me nuts with that crap.

Lots of built up frustration on this board due to the last 10 years and I filled expectations. We will all be positive again tomorrow...

Dobbs is/was amazing tonight. O Line got better in second half. Kelly is a stud, Barnett always brings it, King Kong read a screen for a pick six.

This.

Dobbs was studly today. Hate what is happening on D, but loved that they finally ran the O the way it can be run best for Dobbs. I get mad again thinking about the doofus game Debored called and Dobbs played against USCe. Spilled milk. Time to move on and enjoy the rest of the season for what it is.

I feel for Barnett. If we had any DT's he would have blown past Reggie's record several games ago.

Couple quick thoughts

1. Y'all still listening to Butch talk into a mic. Stupidity. He's not gonna say what you want him to say. Get over it.

2. This board usually is pretty We$ free. Let's keep it that way.

3. This league is won and lost at 3 places. Offensive line, defensive tackle and QB. WE DONT HAVE DEFENSIVE TACKLES.

4. Shoop has been underwhelming even considering the injuries.

Butch isn't going anywhere. He's earned it too.

He has earned it. We're going to win 9 games regular season this year. Has a chance to win 10 games! When's the last time that happened? He ended the streak to Florida! And he has done this with more injuries than I've ever seen a team endure. He had a bad loss this season. It's terrible, but Dobbs played really bad that game and of course the Hurd drama behind the scenes clearly affected he team. Other teams have bad losses also. See Michigan and Clemson. But much has vastly improved this program and as long as we continue getting better, he deserves to stay. I believe without all the injuries that this team would have finished 11-1
