Difference is that it was one game. We saw this kind of play in an entire season under Dooley.

We've looked equally bad during stretches of every game this year. In other games we eventually turned it on just enough to win. There are obviously some problems. You can't watch this team in any game and say they look well coached or prepared.

If they had just won last night and made it to ATL, things wouldn't have turned toxic. One crappy game is going to cause so much damage.

And I always wonder why we should accept mediocrity. There's HUGE money involved in college football. Doesn't a historically great football program deserve better?

You are mistaking being always negative with being competitive. You are responding to an ultra competitive person. But I simply refuse to be always negative about something I enjoy. Negative people give up, they don't fight back.

Are you hearing anything from the families of the starters that you know that should be concerning after last night's debacle?

I have been ok with the defense. Take into account the injuries and the poor offense making them stay on the field too long, they've performed admirably. The offense has been offensive. Dobbs has shown no improvement, Hurd has regressed. The oline is atrocious.

Yet we don't want to cut the coaches any slack with the injuries

Most people are cutting Shoop some slack. Although defense has been more than adequate given the injuries, so he doesn't even need that much slack. Crazy how our deepest position (DE) hasn't had a single injury.

I said at the beginning of the year that Atlanta was the goal. Anything else is disappointing. However, I also said that it doesn't necessarily mean that Butch should be fired. You can be disappointed and not fire your coach. Kind of an overreaction if you ask me.

If butch refuses to admit his offense doesn't work, he needs to be fired. He's done enough to keep his job if he's willing to swallow his pride and do what it takes to get this program to the next level.

Definitely. I think the defense had done a good job. The problem is offense and team preparation/mentality.

Honestly, I think this whole team put all eggs into Atlanta, and maybe they put to much preassure on themselves to go further. This can lead to a toxic locker room when things dont go right. Thats where leadership and coaches are important.

I cant imagine the preassure the kids are under at 18-22.

Catbone is right- Tennessee deserves better than mediocrity. It's not like there is no money here. Instead of the multimillion dollar renovation to the stadium, the money should be spent on a winning coach and winning assistants, S&C coach, etc. People aren't going to be so keen on giving money to the university now with Butch clearly on a hot seat if this is not turned around quickly. So similar to 2005- tons of talent and expectation just wasted. OC is the sacrificial lamb, decent season in 2006, SEC east champ in 2007, then Fulmer makes the worst asst hire of his career which costs him the job. I have zero confidence that Butch will make the right decisions about this offense because that would mean he would have to admit his precious offense scheme doesn't work.

I think the disappointing thing about the defense is that they have been "just okay" or mostly "average." Bringing in Shoop was supposed to take them to an elite level. Unfortunately the injuries are largely to blame and we will never truly know how good this year's D could have been.

It's true that we have players wanting to leave and we have several recruits that have become shaky. But it was pretty much out there when PW left that there would be other transfer requests. Losing ugly three weeks in a row has brought so much emotion and resentment to the surface.

This is crazy. Four weeks ago we are the number 9 team in the country. Two weeks from being top 5 team with a loss to Bama and a W over A&M.

Now we have lost top 2 RBs, lost top 3 DTs, lost top 2 CBs, lost top FS, lost starting WR, been without both starting LBs, lost 3 straight. People want coaches fired. Unranked. People quitting team.

Mayhem.

you asked and answered yourself. lol Shoop has done a great job so happy we got him.

I might get flamed for this, but... I'll reserve judgement on Hurd. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to have that much talent only to get swarmed under behind the line of scrimmage on 70% of my carries because the blocking scheme is garbage. He's gotten every yard he has virtually by himself. If at this point, he's decided to save his legs for the NFL, then I don't know that I blame him.

Why are the other running backs not getting swarm? Because they run with a purpose like he used to do. Not the same since his bonehead play vs Georgia. Sit him unless attitude changes.

Yeah. The bigger issue hasn't been on D.

Defense has been about as good as possible. We have thrown people out there that would or should not have been playing this yr with red shirts plus injuries to the main cogs, 2 new safeties, cornerbacks that have no clue but should. Give him a pass but this team has underachivied all year long and the offense has started slow every game except Ohio and the went into a shell and other than 1/3 against vt, 1/2 Florida and 2/3 against a&m they have flat out sucked. So either it is the system which does suck, the coaching which I think is system related which sucks and the qb who has had no one work with him to run this ducky system.

LAVol, are the players wanting to leave because they hate the system and aren't being utilized? Are these starters? If they are, and not bench players, we are in serious trouble. If Butch is still not willing to see that he better make big changes to everything he does and those around him (assistants)- we will be looking for his replacement after next season. I just hope keeping him around and knowing recruiting will take a huge hit- will not set us back years. My god I can't believe we are discussing this. What a mess.

See that is a good point. Kamera has a huge game when he had the opportunity. Kelly runs like a mad man picking up yards. So why is it so different when Hurd runs?
