Factor Military Duty into Criticism

1) not necessarily because they don't believe them...but certainly if they did, they would refrain simply due to political suicide. I am not assuming anything. Just REALLY REALLY question why anyone would make this guy their spiritual adviser. I have NEVER witnessed this type of garbage in a church. Me disagreeing with my pastor's intrepretations is vastly different than me hanging onto my bigot pastor.

2) I am not throwing Wright on the cross. He is not running for president...he can be a piece of crap all he wants. I am more concerned with the man that has followed his teachings for 20 years and wants to sit in the Oval office.

That sums up every thing...............

How much do you really know about Rev. Wright? Other than the 5 sound bytes that have been plastered all over the media? How much do you know about what he does on a community level, or the conversations he has with his parishoners, or how many times he's grieved with people, sat in hospital rooms late on weekends, traveled long distances to help people in need, helped people through difficult times? How much can you tell me about the nuances of Obama's and Wright's relationship?

I, for one, know very little. But I also know that Obama hasn't said or done anything that would make me doubt what he says. So if he says Wright has been instrumental in his faith journey, and that he appreciates what he's done for him and his family, and he denounces these comments that Wright has made, I believe him. And based on how he's handled this, I feel even better about him sitting in the Oval office.

By the way, the author of the article "defending" Wright was former assistant secretary of defense in the Reagan Administration.

So it is ok that he hates the country because he does good works?

I haven't read anything saying he hates the country. The government, but not the country.

I sometimes hate the government myself.

I can think of few professions where a man should put as much thought and preparation into what he says as a pastor should.

“The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people. damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

It doesn't sound like he likes any aspect of the country.

As the son of a preacher, I agree.

And I also try not to judge someone based upon 5 comments his pastor has made, let alone hold them (not the pastor, the parishoner) accountable for those 5 statements. Lord, my next door neighbor is the dearest, most honest man I've ever met, and his pastor made me cringe at least a dozen times during his wife's funeral just a few weeks ago.

Google him.............

You will find more than 5 comments on his personal website and skepticalbrotha website.

I agree to a limited point. Wright went way past any points I could follow along on...anyone that chooses to follow such a man, I do not wish to see as POTUS.

OE, this is one single quote out of a 30-year history of giving sermons, and in this quote he specifically states "the government," not the country or its citizens or the principles upon which it was founded.

We're really quick to completely judge a man on 5 sound bytes, and we're even quicker to extrapolate that on a man who was a member of his congregation.

Anyone who's willing to dodge drafts and then spend a trillion dollars of taxpayer money and sacrifice more than 4,000 men's lives in the biggest foreign policy disaster this country has ever seen, I do not with to see as POTUS.

To me, that's slightly more important than some comments made by one's pastor.

I base opinion on 500 sound bytes or quotes....

The man hates America and the man hates white republicans.

It is cut and dry.

At some point TennNC you have to make decisions about people...you have their words and actions to go on. Here we certainly have words and actions(or inaction) in the case of Obama.

You are getting off topic here. Your like or dislike of Bush's policies have nothing to do with whether Obama is qualified or not. Putting Bush down does not prop Obama up.

Following a bigoted pastor tells me plenty about a man.

What inaction? Not leaving the church?

I think I, and more than 50% of voters come November will realize this "pastor flap" was not the most important means upon which to make a decision about this person.

If not, then the next 100 years are going to be very, very long.

I have no idea why the Rev Wright's of the world surprise any one.

These people went through unimangable circumstances to have equal rights and when they reshape America they cannot let go of their hate to see it all the way through.

That is the sad part........

50%, that is funny.....

Who ever wins will be in the low 40's.

Either side has put out absolute trash......

1) Too ignorant to know his closest spiritual adviser is full of hate

or

2) Knew but let it slide.

Neither is good.

Agreed. I feel I hear a lot of black people wanting to vote for Obama simply because he is black. Very sad.

Sure it does. it's all relative.

Did the fact that Bush dodged the draft multiple times and then made the worst foreign policy decision in US history not tell you plenty about that man? Obviously it didn't matter to a majority of voters in the last election.

I'm telling you that this is the standard now for how I make a decision on how I'm going to vote. I want the person I think can best get us out of this mess and start to restore some frickin' decency.

Regardless of whatever else might be true, including what his pastor says or believes, Obama was publicly and stringently opposed to this war from day 1, and has staked his legacy on his ability to get us out and repair our status in the world. Given where we are right now, that tells me plenty about him.

Ummm...50% of voters - not those registered, but actual voters. Unless you think Nader is going to surprise us, I'm pretty sure the winner will get 50% of the vote.
