It's not about being fair or who thinks who is or isn't doing more. It's about your best players staying as healthy as possible so you can win. They get that.

Awesome news all around, thanks Fingers! One question-- so are all the guys listed in green jerseys just precautionary or just banged up a bit, not including CFA (hand/wrist)? Any new word on JRM's shoulder?

Some players have avoided contact so far and the reason is usually that they have undergone surgery fairly recently like JRM.....they will give it a go come game time, however
Go Vols

Those guys have nothing to prove. They've already proved it. Right or wrong let one of those guys go down in practice and be lost for the season and we'd all be pulling our hair out wondering what the coaches were thinking letting them go full contact. Losing any of those guys would likely alter the outcome of our season. Not worth the risk.

Have they not been hitting & going full practice up until probably this weekend? I mean if it's going to happen it's going to happen(injury). They could set out these last couple of practices & get injured 1st play of the game. That's why I say it's better for them to go ahead & go fully anyhow.

It's going to happen if it was meant to be. If they go these last 4-5 days without any contact then it could affect them going into the 1st game. I know because I have been a coach before myself but it was for 6th & 7th grade players though.

This is a different level. I just don't agree with holding them out of or avoid them getting hit for 4-5 days before the game. I wouldn't have never done that for any of my best players of mine for sure.

I trust Butch & his decisions but I'm concerned holding them out of full practice for 4-5 days could have an affect on them heading into the App State game. I say this mostly because it's the first game of the season. Thanks!

Let me give you'll one example of why this isn't right or fair. Say Cam Sutton who starts as well is out there busting his butt off in practice & not worrying about injury or anything but he sees Hurd & Kamara wearing green jerseys to keep from getting hit. What's he thinking?

Here I am busting my tail off 4 days before the game but these 2 players are just going half-practice to keep from getting hit? How does that make him as a veteran on this team feel? What about the newcomers? How does that make them feel?

I say they should fully practice. They need to be used to being hit & in shape 100% here 4 days before the game. That's my opinion but of course nobody wants to agree with me on anything I give my opinion on here. Thanks!
That's fair enough, Tony. No hard feelings, we just disagree. We have to do what we have to do to protect Hurd because he's just about our most important player imo. I'm okay with the situation.

It's all good. We all are going to have different opinions on just about every topic on these message boards. Thanks!

It's called not being stupid and getting your best players hurt before the first game. And yes, they're still practicing. Just bc they're wearing green doesn't mean they're not out there. Watch some video. Jesus

Yep bingo! Watching the Bengals play now and look who is limping off the field. AJ Green. Also I remember Mckenzie getting a concussion in a summer practice last year. Set him back even more.

Strong words from Hubbs:

Compared to the cautionary messages we've heard out of camp the past several years, this confidence is really exciting.

I really believe we will see a lot of people play Thursday night. App St quarterback played highschool ball at powerhouse Calhoun for his Dad. He was good, but he hasn't seen a defense like this I believe. Shoop will make him poop!

No! Only for emphasis for what he posted. Not racist at all here good buddy!

You do know green jersey just means no contact, right? The few highlights in the video, which Im assuming you didn't watch, showed Hurd going full speed through drills. You act is if these guys are just dick slappin on the sidelines watching everyone else "bust their butt".

It's still not the same as full contact drills. These are RB's. They will be hit a lot come Thursday night. They need to be hit "now" & the next couple of days to be ready for what's coming. That's just me & my opinion ok guys. They could get hurt in practice just as easy as in a game. Thanks!

I used Sutton as an example. It could be any other starter at OL, TE, DL, LB, CB, S. They are all still hitting each other. You say that I'm like talking to a brick wall. All Sutton was is an example.

Take any other position besides Cam & they're all still hitting each other & falling on the ground pretty hard at times. Thanks!

TB, It's different for RBs.
They get special treatment because they take a pounding far greater than any other position.

And why are you 'thanking' everyone?

Sitting in the media room. Media had 4 periods plus stretching today, but no photos or video in 2 & 3. Pretty much got to see the same drills we always see. My observations:

-9 players in green jerseys, but some were just precautionary (Hurd, Kamara)

-Guarantano beat Jancek in the circle of life drill so that was pretty fun

-QBs were doing an accuracy drill from about the 25-30 yd line and had to throw a corner endzone ball into a net. Dobbs was pretty much robotic as he would make it within the first or second try every time.

-Alexis Johnson was playing a little slow, and by a little I mean Coach Stripling dropping f-bombs at him (even threatened to send him to scout team for walking/playing slow)

-Warrior is continuing to look sharp at safety. Had some good catches on a tracking drill. Abernathy was also looking good.

-We look ready to play and I think this team is going to outlast and outplay pretty much every opponent. Just so much speed, size, and depth across the board which is something we haven't seen in years.

Regarding the notes above on Alexis - hope this is a conditioning issue and not attitude.

They aren't new here. Do you think they've forgotten how it feels to be hit?

I'll probably regret this, but I'll try: Defensive players hit, they don't get hit, so it's pointless to compare the two. On the offense, the WRs line up 1 on 1 and are usually tackled by a single player. Same for TEs running routes. The RBs are the guys who take a pounding (from the big guys up front) and who get get dog-piled. It's just unnecessary for them to practice full contact when they are pivotal to the team's success and they are veterans who have already proven they can play full-contact. It's a smart decision by the coaches.
