For Joshua Dobbs, it's not a taboo subject. It's just not relevant.

The Tennessee quarterback doesn't have hair because of alopecia areata, which first showed up around the time he was transitioning from elementary school to junior high. That's when his mom, Stephanie Dobbs, noticed a thinning spot on his scalp. A dermatologist diagnosed him with the disease, prescribed some medication that calmed the inflammation and brought his hair back in the patchy spot.

"It ebbs and flows, like a lot of other diseases," Stephanie Dobbs said. "You can regain and lose it again. The episode was so short, we assumed it may be completely dormant."

For a while, it was. As Dobbs matured from a dominant pee-wee football player into a legitimate Division I prospect, his hairline slightly receded. Near the end of high school, his eyebrows began to disappear. His hairline continued to recede after he arrived at Tennessee. Eventually, the patches returned, and today, he shaves it all off.

Really cool to hear him open up about it. It sucks that so many people are so cruel to him about a disease in which he has no control over.

He's such a remarkable young man with two remarkable parents.

And I for one have zero shame in being an unabashed fan of his.

I figured there was some, but didn't realize there was so many times he had to hear or read comments about himself.
When my wife and I first noticed it, we talked very briefly about it probably being alopecia, and that was about the end of it.
I always forget how the anonymity of the internet brings out the "best" in people.

D4h, given that it even mentions message boards, this could be a teachable moment.
The continuous bashing of certain players probably doesn't go unnoticed.
But I'm going to go ahead and guess that the lesson would fall on deaf ears.

This is why I can't stand our own fans who joke around about his disease. It's bad enough he has to hear it from everyone else, but to have to listen to the people who are supposed to be on your side make light of the situation is ridiculous.

Why would someone be ashamed to be a fan of Josh Dobbs?

That's the kind of story that makes even rivals cheer for the young man. I can't imagine going through all that. I knew he called his Mom his hero but I never knew why.

Wow.

He's great. The only thing I disagree with him is ignorance is not unintelligence. Ignorance is lack of knowledge. ..we are all ignorant about something-ignorance is correctible. Stupidity is the lack of mental ability-stupidity is not correctible. Those who say things about him after learning the facts are either stupid, and can not help that condition any more than he can help his condition or his mother can help hers, OR they have no empathy for others and are also cowards hiding behind the anonymity of web sites or the protection of the playing field (where no one hears it but Josh and they can deny saying it if challenged afterwards). Losers either way.

We are lucky to have a young man of Josh's caliber and kudos to his parents.

Some around here try to ridicule me by saying I must be his grandmother or in his family cause I defend him.

Its sad that I gotta defend why I like the kid on a Tennessee fan forum.

Please. Nobody has a problem with you liking Dobbs. Heck, most of us are incredibly proud and thankful to have him as our QB and representative of the University.

We just all think that you're crazy.

Can't help but like this guy. Great leader for us at the QB position, and he'll have success wherever his life takes him.

You have to defend yourself because you're a hypocrite.

No, I'm fairly sure that's not it.

I'm leaning more towards the relentless bashing of coaches and other players for an errant pass.
Possibly even the insane accusations when someone doesn't agree with you.
Give me a second to think about that.

After a moment a thought, yep, I'm definitely sure that's the real reason. Not that the majority dislike one of our most popular quarterbacks in UT history.

One of the many things I gained from this story, was how impressive Dobbs is for never playing the victim.
Irony.

Hope JD does not "disappear" after grad. Hope he stays near and remains a great public supporter of UT like P. Manning has.

You can take day a low dose steroid to blunt you own antibodies from killing hair follicles .. The problem is that most rheumatologists will not keep a patients for long periods of time ..steroids are use in short courses

Yep that's the real lessen that Joshua is trying to teach...No victim mentalities allow here...Way to go JD...You are a true inspiration to ANYONE who thinks life has dealt them a bad hand and IT MUST BE SOMEBODY ELSE FAULT....thank you for facing LIFE head on and succeeding far above and beyond...of course...one doesn't have to look far to see where that came from...mom AND DAD!!! I think THESE KIND OF PARENTS ought to write the child rearing books and not a parent of some mega superstar whose live crashes and burns....So glad you were lead to our university and to be the CEO of our football team...Win or lose on the field you have hit the proverbial home run already....
