"Vols have no business in Top 10"

The writer makes compelling points, and Tennessee is going to have to prove it this year on the field.

But I'd pose the following question: On paper, would any Tennessee team from 2008 -2014 be within 21 points of this year's version of the Vols? I think no. And that is the reason the past isn't all that relevant and we are ranked so highly.

What's the disclaimer at the end of most of the infomercials- "Past performance does not guarantee future results" or something to that effect?

It's a prediction of the upcoming 2016 season, the past decade has no affect.

Mills, dude. There is a huge amount of irony in saying, "who cares what anyone thinks" in a message board.

Message boards are all about nothing BUT caring what others think (reading) and hoping that others care what you think (writing). There is literally nothing else to the forums BUT that.

Well, and Freak making a bit of $$ off the ads. :)

Im just saying we shouldn't get excited about one dude and his opinion. The coaches put us at number 10. All we have to do is show them they are right.

UT ended the season beating the #13 team by 39 points and is returning all the important parts. Thinking they deserve to be 3 spots above that isn't a stretch

I put very little stock in bowl game results, and neither should you.

Again, what the hell are you talking about? UGA has been more relevant than UF over the past 5 years. We also beat curb stomped a high ranked team in our bowl game and beat a high ranked South Carolina.

S Carolina? Ok.

Northwestern in a bowl game? Ok.

That is what you have to tender to us as your signature wins? Come on, certainly you can see that those wins aren't going to have people convinced.

I do agree with those who think UF ought to be a pretty easy win for you this year, so that is not going to do the trick, most likely. Fact is, you need to beat Alabama, either regular season or SEC c-game to get the full respect you think you deserve.

I get what you are saying, except in this case it wouldn't be a leap from 7-5 to a Top 10 team. That suggests a 1-season turnaround, which is not the case here. It's been 7-6 to 9-4 to preseason Top 10.

FTR, I don't know if UT is a Top 10 this season or not. What I do know is that they were 3-4 plays from being a playoff team last season, and that team, which lost very little talent, is one year more experienced, has had one more year in the S&C program, has had one more offseason to develop chemistry, has made a major upgrade at the DC. (which cost us at least 2 games last season, IMO)

But I really don't care if we start Top 10 or not. We won't know if we are a Top 10 contender or pretender until the UF game.

A lot of teams can say they were a half dozen plays from contending for something. I want to see you make those plays, against an Alabama, or even against a Florida, before I jump on the bandwagon.

On paper, yes, it makes total sense. And I'm ready to believe it. But there's still significant lingering doubt, for me anyway. Then again, I certainly come from a different perspective on the issue.

If it were a national writer, I'd agree with you.

That said, this smells like whipping the reds into a frenzy to get dem clicks.

And in this respect he has succeeded.

Reminds me of the college football mags back in the 80s. Don't know if it is still the case, but they changed the cover depending on where the mag was going to be sold. If in Gainesville, it was a pic and lead story about the Gators, if Knoxville it was about UT.

Never did compare the content, but I'd not be surprised if it has all been about taking advantage of these loyalties, often times not very rational.

The last 3 seasons UT has increased win by 2 per season. If that trend continues that will make us an 11 win team. Teams in the SEC with 11 wins wind up in the top ten.

If bullfrogs had wings, beggars would'nt run to the cliff over the sea ... or something ...

If my team had lost by 5 touchdowns to a comparably ranked team I'd probably have the same stance. But since you have an almost perfect record on VN picking the direction of future events I am more than happy to accept your prediction of failure. In fact, I welcome it

Of course it's relevant when the "writer" chooses to base his argument on past results.

Pre-season polls are and have always been column fodder to attract/hold readers until there's something on which to report. IMHO, rankings remain just that until 8 games into the season.

Whomsoever this whackjob writer is artfully forgets or discounts we took the National Champs into the 4th quarter at their house and ended up only losing by 5 points. The national championship game by the same team blew Michigan State out of the stadium (as we did NW), the Spartans couldn't even give 'em a ball game. MSU was so bad it was not even a scrimmage for the Bammer 1s. Little beat writer may want to be sure MSU stays ranked ahead of us this year then. Dumb %$#@!*&^%$ers.

The Big 10 will always have teams highly rated regardless of how good they may be. The reason being the large amount of influence and press they enjoy, i.e. look at the big trophy winners over the years.

I hope that team 120 ignores polls and the press and stays focused on playing ball. "Win this game" is proven.

Uhhhh NW was #13 and really, really wanted to win that game.
And the USC team I'm speaking of finished in the top ten.

You're not very bright. My guess is you're a "settlement specialist" lawyer. I doubt you win much with your lack of logical skills. Your poor clients.

What a nonsensical argument. Only an idiot would think that has anything to do with the current season

I'm so tired of these click bait blogs just throwing out poorly written crap for the sake of a couple more pennies in ad revenue. But I guess it's hard to have pride in a job that's one step above a barista

True, but the infection spread here and VN boosted the click count significantly.

Sure. But as I noted, Butch took steps to correct what cost us 2-3 of those plays when he hired Shoop. But that's JMO. Nobody has to agree with it.

I'm not asking you to jump on the bandwagon until after UT defeats UF,

Fair enough, because reading comments from gator fans in the "Whose expecting a double digit win over the gators" bait thread started by one of gator homers, there are more than a few gator homers that believe the gators are a whole lot better than the media is giving them credit.

It's fandom in the SEC.

Pure and simple team 120 need to go out and take respect, that's what you do when it isn't given.

Ok, riddle me this: What would you rather have heading into the next year to give you confidence? A beatdown of Northwestern in a bowl game or a narrow marquise SEC regular season win over Alabama or Florida?

We all know the answer. You can say it.

Dude, it was Northwestern. They got creamed by the two decent Big Ten teams they played, Michigan and Iowa, by a combined 78-10.

78-10 !!

You'll have to excuse me if I'm not all googley eyes over that resume.

Florida is a bit of an unknown this year. Logic says that we HAVE to be better offensively, having gotten rid of Harris. But we just don't know.

My expectations are low, and for our game you are at home and have your best team assembled in years. I think any rational person would pick you to win at this point. I certainly do.

I think this is just a reflection of the skepticism out there about whether the experience factor is really going to translate into W's. In years past, to make the leap from 7-5 also ran to 10 or 11 win top ten program, there's usually been a win or two over a big time opponent. Tennessee is missing that, so I think it's natural that people respect the potential of the Vols, but need to see that result on the field before committing.

I can handle your post because your avi is amazing.
good post, better avi.

Actually, it's a horrible argument. I'm fine saying that the Vols don't deserve a spot in the top 10 because he doesn't believe we're as talented as 10+ teams out there. But what does the past decade have to do with the 2016 preseason ranking? It shouldn't have ANYTHING to do with it. We're in the top 10 because we have 19 returning starters, including some really elite talent, from a team that looked really good the last time anyone saw them. I don't know if we're really a top 10 team or not, but saying we can't, or shouldn't be, because we haven't had a good last 10 years is just bad logic.

Exactly. Just another sports "journalist" who reveals himself to be an idiot. It would be nice if he was the exception to the rule, but it seems like most of these guys can't think their way out of a wet paper bag.

Ridiculous reasoning.... since NO ONE has "done anything" to base a ranking on yet.

If his point was that polls used for the playoff or bowl placement should not begin until October.... then maybe that has merit. But Bama..... hasn't done anything with THIS team to prove they're #1. Clemson hasn't done anything with THIS TEAM to prove they're #2. OU who was beaten by a bad Texas Team last year certainly hasn't proven they're #3. Michigan? FSU?

How about Stanford who lost to a team that UT absolutely smoked? Have they done anything to prove they're #7?
