'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

TBH, Kirby is destroying our staff right now in recruiting. This class as it is absolutely sucks. It's rated fairly high right now because of the sheer number of commits compared to every one else. In past years it would average out in the 20-25 range when all is said and done. People will probably think I'm crazy, but they may need to figure out a way to get someone on the staff after this season who can go into Georgia and do some serious damage like a Rodney Garner type.

Like I said in the Mike Jones thread. This is about on the field production. If we handle our business this year, guys like Deangelo will want back on the train. Kirby is selling snake oil at the present moment. We will see what Saban's clipboard holder is all about when the season starts.

They already know.
But if they waited for the actual results, just think about how much beeching they would miss out on. Can't have that.

We don't want Kirby to have on field success at Georgia. Doesn't scare me because we are good too, but dangit I'd like us to dominate for a bit

Does he have to suck at coaching like Rodney Garner too?

Bingo. Hard to look at or remember the list

I've been saying it. There is an obvious problem right now with recruiting. Its not wins. If you can sell 5 and 7 wins, you can sell 9. Its ridiculous to think otherwise. Do they need to improve again this year? Of course. Being picked to play in the SEC title game is an easy thing to point to as a coach. Recruits can read the football publications and preseason rankings. Those who think UT playing in that SEC title game somehow solves all the recruiting issues surfacing seems silly to me. We are expected to be there this year.

What's ridiculous is not understanding the difference between selling hope as a beginning coach and having results to sell years later.

He's ranked #2 recruit out of Georgia , a 4 star, and the so called insiders had him as a Vol lock. Sounds like you are trying to convince everyone, including yourself that it's no big deal. It's a big deal

Bignewt is convinced that no recruit is a big deal. Maybe in a vacuum he's right, but saying it miss after miss is a little delusional.

There are reasons for this. It will change as the season goes, and we will finish with a strong class. No worries.

You'll get the responses:
Its July!
Based on past classes I trust Butch.
There are a lot of 3*s that will get ranking bumps.
Class will still be top 5. (Literally saw this a few days ago... not a chance in hell)

I agree with you completely. This class was supposed to be a MONSTER, possibly the best ever at UT. And as of right now, its absolutely awful. We are taking kids way down the list because our targets are going elsewhere, not because of some superior talent evaluation. We can only hope that a successful season will salvage this class.

5 wins, then 7 wins, then 9 wins. I'm not selling hope. I'm selling proven, clear improvement. Back to back bowl blowouts. My squad is right there. Literally a point away in these games. It's not hope. Its apparent and imo very sellable. The recruiting issue IMO is internal and the way it's being executed.

Exactly, I don't get why everyone thinks Smart is going to be so great. Why will he be different that all the other assistants that have left Saban to be on their own? He has not coached a down yet and a lot of people are ready to make him the next Saban! Much different when you are the big dog responsible for entire team.

One thing he had trouble with, even with the help of Saban, was the hurry up style. JMO but I think he is going to have some growing pains this year!

And the giving up for the center square!

We're set to enjoy what will hopefully be the greatest Tennessee achievements in roughly a decade.

I mean come on, what response should we have other than "oh my god, everything just sucks".

Seems obvious, I mean "rationalizing" and stuff.

Well of course it is.
You're absolutely right. No way it's kids wanting to see us actually win the big games, it's that this staff can't recruit. They've shown that time and time again. What was I thinking?

I have no doubt it will turn a couple guys, but I think we will see the fruition of a successful year in 2018.

A lot of people (maybe rightfully so) are hard on ZA, but our recruiting has been noticeably less effective since RG became recruiting coordinator. I know we have Welton and all that, but traditionally the RC has been very important in class planning and recruiting strategies.

It may be nothing, but just trying to reconcile the "downturn."

This. People act like top recruits are going to jump on board a program with mediocre W/L for over a decade. Butch was able to sell PT in his first few years, but now that our roster is loaded, he can only sell success going forward. Once we have it, we get recruits. The days of top recruits coming here despite our lack of success on the field are over.

People should be infinitely more worried about W/L than whether we need coaches who can recruit better.

I think we will have a great season on the field. I'm not worried much at all in fact. If we aren't playing for an SEC title I'll be shocked. Recruiting is year round. Yes, even in July. Playing for SEC titles beyond 2016 hinges on recruiting. Yes, even in July as targets are coming off the board.

And if we enjoyed this success, under your theory, it won't create much of an impact.

No need to keep going, I perfectly understand where you are coming from, but I think about it is an entirely different story.

Yeah, at the end of the day it's July. You can only say "Go Vols, going to be a great season" on a message board so many times.

When fall camp gets in full swing, we will have actual football to discuss, but for now, recruiting is the only game in town.

And yours is?

Fahr Butch?

Fahr somebody anybody?

Drop to NAIA?

Follow an awesome recruiting team?

Leave their board?

(Voting for the last one personally :))
