'17' TN ATH Tee Higgins (Clemson commit)

Arguing histories of programs is so pointless in this era. While I think history should matter, it's not hard to see that the vast majority of fans across the nation subscribe to the "what have you done for me now" mantra. Most of the time, if you bring up history people just give you sh*t and say you live in the past.

For example, I follow Clemson Tom on twitter, just for the lolz, and any time he talks about Tennessee he just mentions that they are a "cute little program with a passionate fanbase." This isn't just meant to be a callout (even though I think he is a total asshat) but he is the prime example of the large majority of CFB fans these days. It's all about how good have you been in the last couple of years. History doesn't matter any more, so trying to argue that with someone is like trying to win an argument with a brick wall. It's futile.

Part of preparing for the announcement. You can't shock the world if everyone knows where you're going. Haven't we seen that a lot over the years?

"I'm gonna shock the world"!

Then they commit to the school everyone thought he would.

Well, this one was different. Because it happened to us doesn't make the kid a punk. He wanted his moment.

Players don't normally jerk around the local school like that but maybe you're right... this was a fishy recruitment though.

For the record I never said Tee Higgins was a punk. I said he "punked" the staff. There is a difference you know. I really don't give a ****e about Tee Higgins. Is he a good prospect? Yes. Is Tennessee going to be good without him? Absolutely.

Yeah, I would agree there. You can have your moment without purposely leading on another program just to have a bigger shock on commitment day. Take Emory Jones commitment for example, I think its pretty safe to say no one has any real insight as to where he will decide to play college ball at because he has played it very close to the chest. He has played the recruiting game the right way. I wish more would conduct themselves the way he does. He's a stand-up kid. Hope we get him.

Unfortunately that may be part of the problem. I don't think the local school is viewed in the same light as the fans see it compared to how a lot of local recruits/families/coaches see it.

I'm not sure what a rocket science has to do with it, but I support a lot of things Butch does. I'm just as vocal about the things I disagree with. Trust me, it's ok to have an opinion even if at times it's not sugar coated. There is good and bad in life. Its ok. I promise.

Being foolish doesn't exactly relate to giving an opinion about something but if trolling is the way to do it, then there's no hope for you.

You have to assume things to villainize the kid. Maybe he used us but oh well. We're adults. He's a kid. He'll grow up. Someday hopefully we will too.

Right now we are a run first team. We can still get him back if Tennessee has a big seaaon, but we need to throw better and we need CU to disappoint.

Let's not burn the bridge back to home.

That's what I said a while back. I'd stop recruiting him. If closer to signing time he reconsiders, he'll call. I believe Richmond did exactly that.

Sick insult bro. What's a weird obsession about a school I attended at one point? I started my Master's degree at Clemson before transferring so I'm somewhat aware of the history. I'm indifferent as to what goes on on the field with Clemson. However, my fandom for UT and and my lack of fandom for Clemson or any other school doesn't take away my ability to be objective and rational when discussing the merits of a team, program or player. Believe it or not, one can be a fan of someone, hate the opponent and still recognize the opponent is really good.

You lost him at objective and rational

I pretty much hate every school besides UT. I do think I can remove my Orange shades as needed to get a reasonable grasp of various situations. I have noticed that some just can't do it with regard to other schools and especially regarding quality football programs. Clemson is doing well. Dabo unfortunately is abusing Butch currently in recruiting. As for on the field last year, I think we lose that game if played by 6-8. This year, probably a toss up.

Pretty much the way I feel. I don't understand why a few get so upset if you question Butch on anything. He's the right coach here and he will be successful. But there's a few, actually several, that believe he is above criticism.

Good points. I doubt he comes back. We could make him second guess his decision for sure. I guess it depends on whether he set the bridge on fire.

Very reasonable post and I agree. However, that claim that we were the leader on May 30th was obvious bull snot.

There is a difference between people thinking he is "above criticism" and people just getting annoyed at the arm-chair coaches that constantly complain any time something doesn't go perfectly. According to VN, about half of the users here think they could do a better job recruiting this 2017 class just because "we sposed to be gud dis year."

I think history is very important. It separates ignorant fans and those that have knowledge that football was played before most people became aware of it, oftentimes when non-athletes attend a college. Had your buddy Clemson Tom knew that Tennessee was 9th all time in wins, he would have realized they were more than a 'cute little program'. Instead, his limited knowledge of only recognizing his nose in front of his face made him appear to be an imbecile and relegates him as someone no one should take seriously. Unfortunately, there are more Clemson Toms of the world than people with factual knowledge. So I can see why people have migrated to the mentality you describe above.

Yep, exactly. It's annoying but yet, funny to see posters thinking they know more than the coaching staff who are professionals at what they do.

Woah now, he is not my buddy. I think the dude is an asshat, like I said. And obviously I believe histroy is very important. I'm just stating that it's an unfortunate side effect of the era we live in. The large majority of people subscribe to the belief that we live in a "what have you done for me now" mentality. It's just how things are. You try throwing out statistics about the past century and they will throw out a statistic about the past 5 years. I'm not saying I agree with it.

Trust me, I think it's a dumb outlook. Any time I get in a debate about the NFL with friends, we talk about histories and they tell me to stop living in the past when I discuss Pittsburgh having the most SB wins of all time. All they can talk about is the last 2-3 champions and anything before then is apparently non-existent. It's just how things are. People only care about the short-term now.

It doesn't matter what anybody here thinks so I would say as long as you are not contacting recruits or commits with drivel then it is all in good fun. I like to have discussions with those I don't particularly agree with so this is the perfect place. Its not for everybody though.

I agree. Don't contact or tweet recruits. If they go looking for people discussing them in relation to UT recruiting them like this board, they opened that can of worms. You get the good with the bad.

No one thinks that. If someone says they aren't happy with recruiting or question why Butch is recruiting a certain player, it doesn't mean that poster thinks he's better. That's crazy

Don't take it so personal when someone says something you don't like about Butch.

Exactly. Nice post

Yes, but if you can't see that the amount of people "questioning Butch" this offseason has reached career highs, then you are blind.

It's like people want a reason to complain about something. Has the 2017 class so far been what was advertised from like a year ago? No. Not close. But there is also a long way to go and we are on the verge of possibly one of our best seasons since the turn of the century and everyone is on here finding something wrong with what Butch is doing.

Some of you will never be pleased with this program unless it's on a Saban-level dynasty and FYI those are a once in a generation outcome.

Well you weren't arguing last 100 years. You argued last 25. Your problem is you post **** on emotion and rather than facts. You assumed that was going to be some great insult because you assumed/thought UT had accomplished more in conference than Clemson had in the same time frame. I wouldn't be so quick to throw GT way ahead of them ether. The numbers, except for claimed national titles, are pretty much even across the board.

I have tried to explain to you what is going on here but you can't do anything but hold onto arguments that show Western Kentucky and other schools in a light that is better than UT. You enjoy it and you do troll to argue just to argue. I pointed out that Clemson is a paper tiger with just recent success. UT has not even had recent success. We have absolutely sucked over the last decade. However, Clemson is not this storied program and that was what was being pointed out. Nothing in my original post was about UT. It was about your Tigers. This last post just shows you troll to argue for the sake of it.
