'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

We'll cut some, while others will get a boost.

Tre Lawson
Theo Jackson
Murphy
J Henderson

will all be 4 stars.

Page and Byrum wont be Vols.

I thought the conventional wisdom was that committed players are less likely to receive a bump. Intrigue with higher ranked players sell subscriptions and all that. So all of the sudden we are banking on our already committed players to receive bumps to feel better about this class?

I hate to agree with the Crunchy one. But the number of offers that would have to be pulled to make a top 10 class would not be ideal in the least. I know that recruiting is a cutthroat business but having ten+ decommits is bad publicity. Hopefully our performance in 2017 will allow us to be a little more picky in 2018.

I think the coaches are upfront with them that they need to perform in the classroom and on the field their senior year for the offer to stand. I think it's why that Florida kid committed to us while simultaneously saying he was still open to being recruited. I think those were poorly chosen words on his part but he was trying to say don't forget about me if things change with UT.

I don't have a problem with any of it. Kids do it to the coaches. It's just a tough business.

Yup. If the coaches want to drop recruits, the recruits would be wise to keep as many options open as possible. Take visits. Kid has to protect themselves from being burned.

The "conditional" offer stuff is interesting. Honesty I doubt it happens much. Kids aren't committing in June with a bunch of stipulations on the "offer". IMO they would wait. Cotman is a bit different as he's never even been to campus. I could see his offer/commitment being shaky at best from both sides. I mean to use the generic idea of "perform on the field" is kind of wide open. If he's a RB does that mean 900 yards? 1273? Score 25 tds? What if he does better as a SR than he did as a JR? Is his spot secure? I'd wager it isn't if Butch likes someone else better that pops up later in the process. It's just too wide open to interpretation. I doubt very many commitments are conditional in the way some fans think.

As long as we can nab Smith and Akers/Chandler I have no problems with this class. High quality depth and a few possible stars. Top 5 class ranks count for a bit when talking about champ rosters but hey Bama had like 6 #1 class finishes but those didn't equal 6 NTs.

Fair point. The years bama didn't win it, was the one who did a regular in the top 5? I'm guessing it's likely, but I don't know.

Actually I would think Florida state and Ohio state were up there, at least top 10 average finishes over a similar period of time. On Rocky top talk there was a article on recruiting class averages of NT winners a few months ago, worth a gander.

The way I view recruiting in general is it nothing but speculation at this point. In 2021 a group of scouts could rank the 2017 class with much more validity than they can today. Some might call this the NFL draft. With that said, a player getting a "bump" really shouldn't matter because he is still the same football player whether 247 notices his bump worthiness or not. I think most folks forget these recruiting services are a business and are ran as such.. Unless they are writing articles about you then it is not likely you will get bumped.. That's why so few committed players make significant bumps..
The whole bump to a 4 star doesn't change one thing other than your own perception of his skills.

Well they won THREE more Nattys than anybody else in that period, and came within one absolutely freak play from playing for a 5th title in 7 years....so there's that.

They also needed a freak play by Arkansas against Ole Miss to even win the SEC West last year.

So lets stop with the speculation.

No one has won the National Title without multiple Top 10 recruiting classes the 4 years prior. That goes back as far as recruiting rankings have occured if I remember correctly.

Good news is that we are one of only a handful of schools that have multiple top 10 classes in the last 4 years.

I'm greedy. Give me Foster and Gibbs as well. I think there are 6-7 positions we can upgrade as well. Just because we have who we have committed, doesn't mean the coaches shouldn't look to improve the class. I'm ok with some projects that may be contributors by their junior or senior seasons. But we need impact guys as well. Like to see us get an impact DE too.

Close me out with this wishlist:

Gibbs
Smith
Akers
Chandler
Holloman
Wade

Lose 2-3 to make room and you have me pretty satisfied. That would put us in the top 15, which is good enough for me. I doubt we get all of these guys, but if we were to close out with those 6 it would make for a hell of a finish.

Wade is a long shot.
Holloman will probably end up at Georgia.
Gibbs gone to Georgia

Akers is 50/50 and I think we land Smith and Chandler

I agree, Wade is a longshot. He is on the bottom of my list. But, I think there is reason to believe we can get the other 5. Holloman migt be a UGA lean right now, but I think if he holds off his commitment till later in the season we will have concrete proof to show him our passing game can be legit. And spanking UGA in Athens will go a long way as well.

You really give UGA a 65% chance to land Gibbs after he has been reported to be all-vol for awhile? So one to two weeks of positive UGA press is all you need to hear to give them a distinct advantage over us?
