Third and Kong package
Barnett, kongbo, phillips, and either Khalil, Shy, or Vereen plugging the gap up the middle...That's pretty dam intimidating pre snap for any QB and O Line.
Add in a blitzing Maybin or Gaulden and something good is bound to happen...
Not sure why some people are concerned about the depth of the line. We have pretty good depth and almost all of the guys can play anywhere on the line so I don't think it's that much of an issue. They will shine this year.
There is cause for a little concern.
I don't think Shy will play this year.
WWere going to see a lot of situations where Barnett and Kongbo play DT.
Which is fine because then you can get Kyle Phillips on the field more.
We need to build leads and make offenses pass to try and catch up.
Do you have info on Shy possibly not playing this year, tell us what you know about Shy's progress........is it just the info that Butch gave us about his 50-75% of being back?
Let's just run a 5-2 with Vereen, K Mac, Tuttle, Kongo, and Barnett all playing together
Butch was in this situation before with Curt Maggit. His first year as coach. Maggit was ready to play in 2013 after a knee injury late in the 2012 season. But instead he sat out. Returned in 2014 with Barnett and kicked butt.
Butch plays with words and timetables a lot concerning injury. Hes saying that Shy is 50 percent at worst and 75 percent on the most perfect day.
So in other words, for Shy to get to a point where he is dependable and confident, he needs to show Butch that physically he can be consistent. This will take well into the season...Because of Butchs nature and Shy just fighting to be able to exert energy and effort consistently.
By then we will know if Kongbo at 290 is ideal or if Barnett and Mixon need more stints at DT.
We have versatility. Butch is not going to rush Shy back.
I will stand by my hypothesis that Butch was referring to Shy being 50-75% in condition. It was stated a couple of weeks ago that Shy was going to begin running at this moment in time, if that is true, for a big man, he is healed and now needs condition and to rebuild strength. Shoop also made a comment about It being good to see injured players like Shy back in his latest interview. Glass is 50-75% full for this Vol fan.
Shy = Team 121 comeback player of the year 😉
To be honest, I hope he does red shirt related to us not needing him this year. The selfish side of me hopes he is back like he was last year also.. Either way, hope for the best for Shy, he is a great player for the Vols. Do what's best for Shy's health is priority one.
I agree and I also agree Butch tends to really take care of injured players. Let's face it Maggitt was not one of his kids, he was a young man severely injured that could have been easily run off by a new coaching staff. He wasn't and CBJ IMO did what he could to help and protect that young man really owing him nothing given the dog eat dog world of college football. I like to think whether we see Shy this year which is my hope or even if he does red shirt that CBJ and staff have his best interests at heart and not treating him as meat for the grinder. There's not a lot of SEC programs or staffs that care about their kids like that IMO.I also want him to try and play this year. But i know Butch.
Whats really sucky is that when KMAC begin to get more minutes, that's when Shy begin to stand out! They were feeding off each other. Now they're out of sinc...
That point makes me hopeful that if we do see Tuttle this season he will be at 100%. I don't think Coach Jones plays him otherwise.I agree and I also agree Butch tends to really take care of injured players.
