Tennessee fans, meanwhile, are having a hard time not to getting ahead of themselves. The Vols are a preseason top 10 fixture and clear-cut SEC East Division favorite. The so-called “Orange Swarm” defense returns eight starters from a unit that allowed 20 points and 362 yards per game last season.


“I’ll be honest, a lot of the heavy lifting here has already been done,” Shoop said, crediting former defensive coordinator John Jancek. “This transition has been really different; I’m not inheriting a defense or staff that did not have success.
“You as leader want to put your stamp on things, but you check your ego and say they did some things really well.”

I thought is was a classy thing for Shoop to give Jancek the credit he's due. Jancek took that Sunseri disaster and turned it into a very good and athletic D.

Shoop is one of the best in the CFB game and is a definite upgrade but Jancek is a fine Defensive coach and I hope he lands another DC gig for a big school soon.

His calls were the only suspect action.
As far as teaching and prepping the guys, he was top notch. Unfortunately, it's wasted talent if they are not where they need to be.
Hopefully, he has learned from his experiences.

Your 100% correct. That 4 and 14 call at Florida was one of the biggest WTF moments I've ever had as a Vol.

This program has come a loooong way since Butch took over and I like the fact that he is never satisfied and I think it took a lot of guts to change DCs this soon. An upgrade for sure, but to recognize what this program could be is significant. It's going to really be fun this year--long time since I could say that instead of wishing & hoping. GBO!

No lie. It was just bizarre to even think of spying on 4th and long and basically defending the biggest play of the game with 10 guys.

Didn't mean to give it a like, meant to quote it.

As painful as that play was for us ... I thought it was more a lack of execution, than the call or defensive set-up.

Doesn't matter what Shoop thinks or does, because as I understand it we are "very thin at DT." Therefore we are doomed. LOL

I'd say at the very worst, Shy will be ready to roll by Florida. That is the 4th game of the year, I think he will have enough time to get back into football shape. That is assuming he keeps progressing like he is.

Not just coach speak, he's right.

Just a few things needed improving. From what i've heard, Shoop's blitz packages will add a huge upgrade as well as utilizing the talent we have at DB to drop guys back and send that extra guy after the QB that would have put Will Grier on his ass instead of giving him 10 years to throw the ball.

Okay, maybe not all coach speak.

If they are not on board with Butch then they are not on board. That was all worked out before there was ever a contract. Butch has a plan. Jancek was also part of Butch's plan.

We were such a very good defense on 3rd down last season and it was because Jancek was typically very aggressive. It was always rather mindboggling as to why he dialed it back on 4th downs. But certainly JJ deserves a huge amount of credit for the talent and character of the defense Shoop was handed.

Good post.
Maybe he was stuck in old school mode
where 4th down was punt only.
The difference in 3rd and 4th Down was truly mind-boggling as you said.
