I wouldn't trade rosters with UGA, A&M, or UF. Any recruiting advantages they have over UT are minimal and likely amount to a couple of extra do-nothing 4* benchwarmers.

Our starting 22 is really damn good and so is the two-deep. We will not head into those games with any kind of roster disadvantage whatsoever.

I wouldn't trade either but on paper theirs are better

And we have done a lot of talking about what classes look like on paper and how championships must be shaped around Those rankings

Damned almighty I agree something has happened to hurt us in recruiting and it's likely a number of things

IMO it's more about CBJ needing a new sales pitch. I think the slogans and coach speak have run their course with recruits

BUT

Win 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15 games I believe butch will adjust and be able to recruit at a consistent top 10 level regardless of how many wins we get this year.( as long as we get to 8)

It all doesn't hinge on one or two plays here or there this season.

Agree 100%

8 regular season wins would be nothing short of embarrassing

If we can't beat Florida and get to 10+wins this season, I seriously doubt we ever get there. At least with the current regime. Nothing against Butch but if he doesn't get there this year, barring some extravagant circumstances, he needs to go.

While I think a lot of other schools would probably make a move coach wise in that scenario, I doubt we see UT do it. They would probably give Butch another 2-3 years to tread water in that 7-9 win range before ultimately making a change.

We have 8 games that are gimmes and we should at the very least split Florida, Georgia, aTm and Alabama 2-2.

What could lead to 9-3 or worse?

-Injuries
-A&M, UF, or UGA being better than expected
-A reverse Auburn 2013 season (i.e., we lose multiple games on miracle plays. Would be exceptionally cruel but not at all unexpected)
-Shoop's defense failing
-The team flat-out not showing up or playing to its full potential in certain games (Arkansas 2015)
-A surprise loss to any of Va Tech, South Carolina, Mizzou, Kentucky, Vandy (see our win vs South Carolina in 2013)

But at the same time, if this team stays relatively healthy, Shoop's defense works as advertised, the players are "bought-in" and compete in every game, and Butch learned his lessons from last season, I see no reason why we don't go 10-2 or 11-1.

Unfortunately, I agree. Like LWS said, which I first disagreed with, we have become or are becoming a 2nd tier football program. Sucks to admit that, but that's where we are if things don't get turned around this season.

That's why getting rid of Cheek will be huge moving forward. Need an athletics-minded chancellor for the football team to have any hope of sustained success.

With the right leadership and coaching staff in place, there's no reason UT can't be a top-tier football program every year. There is plenty of talent in the state now. The facilities and fanbase are top-notch. Just need support at all levels of the university.

The bolded parts, imo, fall solely on CBJ. Should that happen he should go.

Ordinarily, maybe. But UT is making changes to better position the university for success. Cheek's out; Hart's going. The new leadership will be looking to make its mark. If the HC in the top revenue-producing sport isn't meeting their expectations, I think they'll view it as an opportunity to bring in their own guy to take the program to the next level.

If CBJ is recruiting well and winning championships, it won't be an issue.

And do you trust UT not to completely bungle that hire? I don't.

I don't know. I think the fact that Cheek is almost certainly being pushed out the door (and Hart as well, but on a longer timeline) is promising and shows that the board is aware of problems.

VQ hinted that they were perhaps looking at ETSU's chancellor as a replacement, but then they backed off the statement. Makes me wonder if they leaked too much too soon. He would likely be an upgrade.

Those Dooley years. Not that long ago. I think they'd be cautious for sure.

Tennessee will be the story of the draft next year. That will help us in recruiting much like it is helping Oh State right now. Barnett, Hurd, Kamara, Sutton, JRM, Dobbs, Vereen and others will be drafted. I expect at least 2 of them, if not 3 to be in the first round. Barnett may go top 5. Recruits will notice that. There won't be anymore jokes about TN not having anyone drafted after next year.

I agree. Draft picks, especially 1st day picks are things recruits notice.

On one hand, we might lose. On the other hand, we might win. :)

My 2 cents on this:

My expectation for this team is 10-2. I believe that we can at least split the 4 toss ups. While 9-3 would be below my expectations, I would still be alright with it.

1. It's an improvement from last season.

2. We can still win the East with that record.

Fair enough. From what I've read about ETSU's chancellor, I agree with you. It would be a definite upgrade.
