Title IX lawsuit settled for $2.48 million

how can help make it clearer? Sorry

It appears you are saying UT offered $125k to settle, which is 5% of what they ended up paying. Plaintiffs were asking for $1.25 million before filing.

Still seems odd to me. I am in this business, and it is very difficult to have a defendant agree to pay that kind of money before a lawsuit. Sure, there was some very bad publicity, but that is just not easy.

You tell me, before you call me "near-sighted"----would you settle for $180,000 out of court and without your day in court if you had a daughter that was raped?

And JUSTICE sir, in this case--does depend on the truth and not a monetary settlement. Simply stated--either the defendants are GUILTY as charged or they are NOT...

Those women were either raped or they weren't! You saying that justice is not always a "black-or-white" thing is like saying that a woman can be "little bit pregnant".

Not what the lawsuit was about but thanks for playing.

What if you feel like the cops aren't investigating? What if you feel like the DA doesn't care? What if you feel like the powers that be are closing ranks around your attacker?

I'm not at all saying that happened here. But saying "settling isn't seeking justice" is extremely shallow thinking.

it is what UT offered last fall to settle... plaintiffs turned down just like UT turned down their offer..

In my opinion, this is probably cheap. If you fight it and take it to trial, what would it cost in lawyer fees?

And UT was truly GUILTY of attempting to cover it up and failing to hold athletes accountable for their ILLEGAL behavior--

OR they are innocent of the charges and DO hold their athletes accountable to the laws of the land....

I fail to see any gray areas here.....

But--you do live in Alabama, where Fulmer was held GUILTY for TELLING THE TRUTH.....:salute:

Why are you upset? I don't understand? It's not the schools fault the settlement was made. The fault lies with the plantiffs attorneys. They misrepresented strength of the case to their clients and lost. Now will names come out?

If I were seeking justice, I would want the trial to happen in the public's attention. Settling for some money where the school has to admit no wrong would not interest me.

I get what you're trying to say but man, that's just not the case.

If you were a plaintiff in the case that is EXACTLY what it would have been about.

What are you arguing with me for. You know damn well there was going to never be a guilty charge in this case. No one was going to jail because you can't send the school to jail. The only defendant was UT and it's policies. Do you honestly think all the people named as witnesses in the trial were on trial? vG you are smarter than that. This was a money grab from the word go.

I think some of you are saying the same thing and misunderstanding each other. You all seem to be making the same point but arguing lol.

Whew!

I thought I had lost it or something. I was thinking the same thing, but had about convinced myself that I must have been reading their posts wrong.

Nice to know I'm not really any crazier than I already knew I was.

You do realize this is separate from the rape cases, right? This was a lawsuit about the culture that UT athletics allegedly turned a blind eye to. AJ and Michael Williams still have to stand trial. Alexis Johnson is still on probation. I swear most of the people posting on this thread have no idea how the legal system works.

No, my daughter would not have been a plaintiff. If she was truly raped a rape kit would be available and the evidence of rape would be there. We would go to criminal court. How you see any outcome from this as more than a payout is beyond me.

I'm not arguing. I'm saying if you or I were a plaintiff and we were raped, that is ALL the lawsuit would be about to us. If we were only interested in a money payout, then, there you go.
